Sefo Got Sacked Way Too Many Times ... Why ?

Is it because that was one of Stanford's strengths ?
Was it because Sefo was off his game ?
CU's running game was good enough that those sacks really surprised me. What happened ?
This needs to be fixed if we have Rose Bowl dreams.

Stanford is second in the conference is sacks/game. They blitzed. A lot. It opened the way for some big runs though.

Did you see #90? Dude is a beast.

I'm not too concerned. As Spiff points out, Solomon Thomas #90 is a very very talented defensive player. He is rated as the number 4 DE in the nation for NFL draft purposes and he is a junior.

A lot of that pressure happened after Lynott went out with the injury.

Felt like 3 of them were on Sefo, not recognizing blitz or holding ball too long. Others were just beating the o-line. Sefo definitely didn't have his best game for whatever reason(s). Rewatching the game couldn't really pick out exactly why.

Stanford has a lot of very talented defensive players. They put a lot of emphasis on not giving up the big pass play. Our WRs were for the most part well covered so Sefo had to hold the ball. They were very aggressive rushing including the earlier mentioned blitzes.

Our best response was when we finally started taking advantage of them with the quick hitters running Lindsay and later Evans. Phil especially was able to get by the first line of defenders and take advantage of the gap in the middle of the defense.

This is a game where our lack of effectiveness throwing to the TE hurt us badly. If we were at all effective going to the TE he could have chipped and slipped into that open area behind the rush and a quick dump would have resulted in a lot of big yardage plays. If nothing else it would have forced them to keep a LB back to cover that zone instead of bringing him upfield.

Unfortunately it's hard to tell what Stanford and USC do that bothers CU offensively so much. They have superior athletes so they have an advantage right off the bat. On this point, we learned some more about this team from this game. They've won so many ways this season it's been nice to see. Fired on all cylinders and killed CSU, ASU, Idaho state and Oregon state. They fired on all cylinders against Michigan but lost due to depth and maybe some talent. They had a duel against Oregon and ultimately won with defense. They struggled against Stanford and USC but they found a way to beat Stanford and almost beat USC. They've won by offense, scoring on defense, turnovers, defense. They've morphed into a team that does the small things right (like the broncos) and more often than not the breaks will go your way after awhile. The defense has been outstanding but here's the fun and scary part. Look how good a coach mac team can be when they believe and they play as 1. Think how good they could be if they had all the talent and depth a USC team has. This team is well coached and when it has superior athletes 2-3 deep, watch out man they're going to be insanely good.

Stanford was also hurt by being so depleted for the past 3 or 4 games. They were finally healthy in their defensive backfield for the Buffs, so we faced a much better defensive team than what Stanford has put out there for the past 3 weeks (starting with UW). Even with the injuries, they rank 12th in sacks per game. They're a very good defense.

I think they have a great pass rush, pretty good DBs, and Sefo held it a bit longer to make sure he didn't throw an INT. Like we wish Sefo would have taken a sack in games the last few years instead of throwing INTs? Now he will.

He had the opportunity on a few to throw it away though which is way better than taking a sack.
