Silver Linings...

A) Josh Scott will get a serious opportunity to take the next step in his development. Next year we could have one of the top big men in the conference.

B) This is a chance for the team to really show their meddle and prove to themselves what they're capable of. They might not be a Final Four team, but this kind of thing builds serious character. That can only help us going forward.

C) Hopkins will be forced to be more of a playmaker than he's been. Developing that part of his game is important.

D) More will also be put onto Booker's shoulders. That extra weight will help develop his leadership will be invaluable next year with this young team.

and...

Though this is NO silver lining, and I wish nothing but the best for Spencer, I have to imagine that he may have to consider returning next year...
 
If he gets a 1st round grade at all, Spencer is gone. He has to be. That guaranteed contract is the most important part.


A) Scott already is one of the best big men in the conference. He has been quietly dominate all year.

B) agree.

C) J-Hop has been a playmaker, but inconsistent. Needs to find his consistency quickly now.

D) Not a good thing to put more on his shoulders. Ski presses too much.
 
This is going to force Fletch to get some minutes. I'm excited to see what he can do with them.
 
This is also a great opportunity for XJ to assert himself and become a true game in and game out play maker.

Forcing the young guys to grow up more quickly and everyone not to rely so much on Spencer to get them their offense or bail the team out when things break down will be a good thing in the long run.

This season, it definitely lowers the ceiling on how far this team can go.

I don't see the Buffs winning the Pac-12 regular season title. I don't see the Buffs being a Final Four threat with the right draw.

But I do see making the Dance. I do see having a chance in the Pac-12 Tourney. I do see a Sweet 16 run possible.

What it's going to come down to is how quickly they can figure this out without Spencer, especially on the defensive end.

C'mon Wsp. Tad Boyle's team is bigger than one mustachioed man's left knee. We don't rebuild. We reload. Next guy up pulls on his big boy pants and starts balling.

It's a disservice and an insult to Spencer's teammates to lower expectations.

Those aren't silver linings, they are just facts.

Scott is already one of, if not the best big men in the West

Somebody or actually a combination of somebodies is going to have to step up and pick up some of what we lose with Spencer being out. Even then we simply aren't as good a team without him as we would be with him.

A) We'd all like to see Scott step up and be more assertive and he can do some of this. At the same time one of the big strengths of Scott is his ability to play within himself. I'm not sure if it would be good for us or him to see him try to be overly agressive and be somebody he isn't. If Scott taking up more of the scoring load comes with the price of his shot selection including a lot of low percentage shots or him focusing on offense to the detriment of his defense then we don't gain.

B) It is a chance for the team to see what they can do without having the Mayor as a fallback to bail them out. Down side again is if they press things to much and end up costing themselves some games or confidence. Don't think Tad would allow this but it is a danger.

C) Hopkins is still a young player trying to figure out who he is in the scheme of Buffs basketball. He has a lot of untapped potential but I want to see it developed right. He can step up but not so far that he falls on himself.

D) It would be great if Ski saw this as his time to focus and become a more consistent threat and bring a higher performance every night. Unfortunately I haven't seen anything to indicate that he is going to be anything other than the highly talented enigma that we have seen shine some games and fade out in others. He has seemed to be more up and less down this year compared to last but still highly inconsistent.

By which, I'm pretty sure Will is saying that Scott has earned a spot in that opening paragraph when discussing the best Bigs in the west.

Defense and rebounding I'm not too worried about. Boyle's teams always find a way. It'd be nice to see them press and trap more, and make it suffocating when they do. Offensively is another matter. Spencer and Ski compliment each other, but can Ski keep up his current pace without the Mayor on the floor? Gordon has to pick it up and stop hesistating with the ball down low. Him and Scott can be a force in the post. Both Xavier's have to become more consistent scorers. etc etc etc.

I think there's a lot of merit to at least putting token full court pressure on with some opportunistic trapping. Oregon State did it to the Buffs in the 1st half and it made a huge difference in their half court defense. CU wasn't able to get into its half court offensive sets until there were only 20-25 seconds left on the shot clock. That could make a huge difference on defensive possessions.
 
Whatever the case, it's nice that we have 10 days in Boulder before our next road game which means more practice time to help implement the necessary changes, such as going through Scott more on offense.
 
No real silver linings....however we are gonna get a jump start to see the 2014-15 team in action (minus the recruits) from here on out. This situation is going to make the freshmen grown up in a hurry and force Scott, XJ and Gordon to step up their games another level.

I think there's more merit to throwing out different zones more often. Against UW, the "man" clearly didn't work to cut down UW's shooting percentages, so why not throw some 2-3 or even a 1-3-1 at the opposition to disrupt their shooting if need be; then return to 'man" when the oppositon is out of synch.

It has the added benefit of slowing the overall game down a bit for both the FR or a shorter rotation. I liked it when Tad slapped that zone on in earier games. Always give the oppos something to think about and have to prepare for, as well as giving them a change of pace.......has always been my motto.
 
They have to do a better job helping and recovering....and learning who the best shooter is and not giving him open looks

Probably, he needs to gain strength and a more consistent jumper (like most 18 yr old kids) but he's an elite level ball handler, can get to the rim and line with ease and plays solid defense. He's also used to playing a very high level of basketball.

I think that also describes Hopkins to a large extent.
