So what's the deal with Shane Callahan?

He was number two on the depth chart as a RS Freshman at Auburn. He even gets limited action on the field. He transfers to CU, a former homegrown 4 star and he gets a waiver to play right away. He's immediately moved to the interior. No shot given to play tackle on a team that has a serious need for tackles. Callahan barely gets on the field. He gets 21 snaps vs. USC. Eight other offensive linemen got more snaps than he did.

So what gives? I thought this guy was going to be a stud for us. I know some unrealistic expectations may have been placed on him (like the ones I'm expressing) but he went from being on the two deep at an SEC championship program to not cracking the lineup for a Pac-12 team that won 2 games. What am I missing?

Good question! Seems like he didn't get much work in the spring game either?
 
I'd be surprised if he's not in the starting lineup against Hawaii. Most likely at RG. He's *probably* also the first option if either Irwin or Nembot gets hurt.

Not sure why that would be surprising... he's not listed as a starter on the pencil depth chart, and if the Spring Game "draft" is any indication at all of consensus then he's not that highly thought of by his teammates either. Kelley was the first OL selected, followed by Irwin, Kough and Huckins. Callahan doesn't seem to be considered among the top 3 interior linemen by the staff, or by his teammates.

I'm impressed by the steady rises of Kough and Huckins... but worried that Callahan just isn't who we thought he was.
 
As Snow said he is competing for a starting spot. Not sure I see a problem with that. This could also mean we have some good interior lineman as well, other than Callahan. That's a good thing.
 
Connor Wood was a 4* prospect in high school that transferred to CU from a marquee program... It's not an exact science.
 
His 'second on the depth chart' at Auburn wasn't completely accurate either when injuries and new recruits were accounted for.

He was a co-starter at right guard on the post spring depth chart. Bernardi said something about not wanting to name a starter to keep the one who is ahead focused on becoming better and not being complacent.

We have discussed this several times before but Callahan was only number 2 on their depth chart very briefly because of injuries and departures, he never earned that spot he never really held he was number 2 of 2 when the guys ahead of him left and got hurt. The only "action" he saw at auburn were some snaps against Western Carolina and Florida Atlantic. The #2 OT at Auburn narrative isn't really factual.

Significant pages were also devoted to why Callahan saw limited snaps last year, what his situation was, and what his agreement with the staff was.
 
We also have to remember that in 2014, CU had 2 senior Guards. Very difficult for a Sophomore to come in and unseat them. I really don't see any issues here. I think some unwarranted expectations were probably put on Callahan as well.

Seems irrelevant to judge a player by who was picked schoolyard style in the exhibition event loosely called "spring game." Guys are going to pick the guys they've known for a couple years first, their buddies, not some transfer they've barely met.
 
CU seems to have a knack for screwing up that whole * system. We have seen many come through the doors at Dal Ward to only digress Ochs, Houston, Wood, Dillon to name a few
 
I think the offensive line as a unit is better and has progressed more than you give them credit for. This has more to do with too low of expectations placed on guys like Kough and Huckins than it does with too high of expectations for Callahan.

Let's not try and make it seem like Callahan is a bust already.

I'm with everyone who is piling-on about this thread being a non-thread, and I've followed all this closely from the beginning. But I don't recall anything about what his agreement with the staff was. Could you refresh my memory on that point?

I think the Oline has the potential to be the best unit on the team.
 
Good player. Huckins is a good player, too. Fall camp will decide who wins the snaps.
