So who wins the guard spots?

Let the best player win.

In years past we have had threads that are "PLAYER X needs to step up". That was everyones hope as that player was really our only option. This year we have 3 starters returning and 4 guys who were on the bench and want on the field.

Coach em up, and get the best line out there.

I would hope that we are starting to move into a point where the coaches have to choose from multiple players who can play instead of us hoping that somebody steps up to give us at least one decent player at a position.

Kough played very well last year when Crabb was out. I think he's pretty locked at LG. Callahan's probably got more competition at RG with Huckins and maybe Wiefels.

Biggest question on the OL right now seems to be who is going to be able to be the backup OC in case Kelley gets dinged.

Kough would likely be backup center even if he wins the left guard spot. I just want Callahan and Kough to win the two spots so hopefully Lindgren wants to run the ball more.

LG-Kough
RG-Callahan

Huckins and Wiefuls fight for back-up Guard and Center spots

What I wonder about is why they have slotted Callahan at guard.

He was competitive at tackle at a program with much more OL talent than we have. My personal opinion is that our very best guard is Irwin who is out at LT.

If Callahan could step up at LT letting Irwin move inside I think he could be devastating leading the run game.

Of course this and all of what we put here is speculation. The coaches see practice every day which we don't.

They let Callahan compete against Irwin at LT and Irwin was better. They feel Callahan's best fit was at OG after watching him for a bit at both positions. Irwin was solid at LT. No reason to move him if Callahan couldn't beat him last year.

And to the subject, I see it as Kough and Callahan based off what I have read. Will be interested to see how the group looks at the Spring Game. At least there is competition and depth to choose from!

In an ideal world, Callahan is LT and Irwin is LG, but with Irwin playing pretty well at LT last year, it would be a mistake to move him inside now.

Why do folks want to move Callahan outside and Irwin inside?

Irwin's twin brother is a good enough athlete to start at TE here. That suggests his athleticism. Also, Irwin did a good job at LT last season.

I think that this idea comes a lot from what positions these guys used to play. But neither were ever starters at their old positions under different coaches and systems. Seems like they're better suited to the new spots.

Bone structure, mainly.

I'm also interested in who is going to be the next man up at LT. I think Irwin is pretty good and could be very good, but he seems to be injury prone. I'd like to see Josh Kaiser ready to go if Irwin (or Nembot) gets hurt, but like everyone is saying, let the competition sort it all out.

I think that would be Kronshage this year. He's the likely replacement for Nembot in 2016.
