a top tier OT in the league. Nate will get a bigger contract before 2017 comes.
Interesting; is this allowed in the CBA? I would guess a lot more guys would put this into their extensions if so. I would think that teams would like to do it as well because theoretically they'd get some concessions in return for putting the "no franchise" tag in the contract, and the chances they'd want to franchise any given player are pretty low.
Apparently nothing in the CBA prohibits it. It's kind of like a no-trade clause or a restricted trade clause (only to certain cities or not to others) all up for negotiation.
Unlike most guys Nate is good enough to demand and get the clause in his deal.
The Pat's know that using the franchise tag on him might end up costing more and piss him off pushing him to leave, this is a good deal for all sides.
Both sides win something here. Solder gets a fully guaranteed 20m deal and the guarantee that he can´t be tagged and can hit the open market at 29 in exchange for total long term security as the Pats probably didn´t want to pull the trigger and give him a 4 or 5 year extension like the Skins did with Trent Williams (5 years, 66m, 30m in full guarantees). It´s a compromise.

Sad to see that happen to Nate... Big blow to the Pats
Hate to see anyone get injured but it's part of football.
Good thing is that it isn't a leg injury or something else that is likely to derail his career. Elvis Dumerville and some others have had torn biceps and come back fine.
He also just signed a two year extension worth $20 million, much of which was in signing bonus.
