Some key pieces in place for the future-Warning Kool-Aid Thread!

It has been addressed interspersed in other threads but I thought we might talk about some of our young guys who look to be the building blocks for future classes and the overall improvement of the team in coming years.

Already Proving they are BCS Caliber:
Addison Gillam (LB): That dude can flat out ball and will be up for all Pac 12 honors this year as a pure Freshman
Awuzie (DB): For a true freshman he has massive upside potential and is flashing some of it already
Adkins (RB): The reports from Fall camp were confirmed yesterday. That dude can tote the rock. He is big and tough enough to go b/w the tackles, fast enough to get to the perimeter and take it to the house and appears to have instinct and vision.
Tupou (DL): Playing well and his weight loss has helped

Other youngeons with major promise:
Sefo (QB): Based on Fall camp reports and that he won the backup job as a true freshman. Also he will expand our ability to use the read-option which Wood is starting to develop as well
Severson (LB): So far nothing as a returner, but his speed for an LB is impressive and should come in handy alongside Gillam in the coming years
Gilbert (DL): Definite potential
Kafavolu (DL): Doing some good things already
Reed (DL): I hear good things about him
D. Gonzalez (K): From what we are hearing this guy has a seriously powerful leg-something we are sorely missing on K/O! At least one point for Neinas
Mosley (DB): Not so great on returns but playing well as a DB
Thompson (DB): Haven't seen him much on D but he is getting some early action on ST

Because we are not going to see or hear much about pure FR OL I don't have an opinion on them. But we have some key pieces in place at skill positions and at least on DL/LB.

Definitely worried about WR and TE and OL given our play as of late. Hope we can close the gaps on BCS level talent in those areas in this class and the next.

Adkins, Gillam, and Awuzie can play.

Only two I really disagree with are Severson and Mosley. All I can tell about Severson is he can run in a straight line really fast. Mosley is just another guy out there in the secondary, good speed but not much else.

The OL going forward has to be a major concern.

Hadn't heard anything about him yet, but I'd think Rippy is your hope for the future alongside Gillam at the LB position.

We have to hope Rippy and Yuri prove to be the real deal next year. Those are two huge wildcards for the defense.

I fortgot about Rippy-no brainer to include in the list. Didn't include Yuri b/c despite his offer list he played poorly last year and was so small and ineffective in Fall camp that he needed to RS this year. I hope he ends up getting close to his potential.

As for Severson, those are fair arguments. However I included him b/c he is fast enough to be picked by HCMM to return kicks which is highly unusual for an LB and b/c he was not redshirted by this staff. Their eye for talent and early contribution seems to be spot on so far so I am putting faith in their judgment. But he obviously hasn't proven anything yet.

Looking ahead to 2014:

QB - Wood (or Sefo)
RB - Adkins
FB - Powell (in more of a Vickers role)
WR - Spruce
WR - Goodson
WR - ?????
TE - S. Irwin or Slavin
LT - J. Irwin
LG - Kelley (or a RS-Frosh)
C - Munyer
RG - Crabb
RT - Nembot

DT - Solis
DT - Tupou (Henington & Samson in main rotation)
DE - Poston / Parker
DE - Gilbert
OLB - Greer
OLB - Rippy
ILB - Gillam
CB - Henderson
CB - Crawley
NB - Awuzie
FS - Bell
SS - Thompson (or Mosley)

K - Oliver
P - O'Neill
KO - Gonzalez

There is quite a bit I like about that, starting with the secondary and DTs. But we really need some help with OL, TE, WR and DE. I wish we could find a way to bring in a JUCO or senior transfer at every one of those spots. The OL I penciled in was a total crap shoot. Maybe Mustoe steps up. Maybe Cotner. Hard to have any idea.

It's not just the starting OL. What does the two-deep look like? We may pick up 2-3 guys in this class that work their way into the mix.

There are pieces, just not enough. I'm not off the MM bandwagon. He is a good coach.

Nik. Thanks for expanding the list by position. I agree. My biggest concerns are TE, WR and OL. We also obviously need someone who can get to the passer which we don't have this year. We really need a few playmakers at WR and TE with size and speed in this class (or better yet JUCOs which I know are not easy at CU.)
