I'm glad that we have improved (muffed punt aside), but jesus christ, the below #s are sickening. We've been so goddamn bad.
Kenneth Crawley's 24-yard punt return was the longest return in more than two years and his 38 total return yards was more than two-thirds of last season's punt return total of 56 yards. That's 56 yards for the entire season, not just a single game effort!

Holy. ****.

On an unrelated note, Crawley is about the first guy since Josh Smith to return kicks that wasn't a 5'8 white guy.

Punt return has been a sore spot for awhile...at least there is progress under Embree in some form.

And before him we had a 5'8'' white guy who happened to be one of our best punt returners ever.

He isn't 5'8". But, he was the one glimmer of light in that ****** 2002 RMS.

His Olympic bio had him at 5'9'', so I figured that was close enough. I'm sure his CU football height was listed as taller. Football roster heights/weights are almost always lies.

In order for there to be a returnable punt, the other team first has to be forced to do so ... a feat our defense didn´t manage all that often last season.

Bloom is probably 5'7" in his cleats, but he was certainly a great return guy for us. Wish we had him now.

I still want to know why they don't block the long snapper after he snaps the ball. I think they ended up chipping him once but I believe he was the guy all over DD on the punt he bumbled.

Why you give a guy a free run down the field is beyond me. I know you can't block him immediately after the snap but you have to account for him at some point during the play. This has been going on for years and I just don't get it.

Other special teams positives:

- CU punter Darragh O’Neill had six punts for 284 yards, a 47.3 yard average. O’Neill’s efforts places him atop the Pac-12, and 8th in the nation.

- As a team, the Buffs’ 46.33 net punting average is second in the Pac-12, and 5th in the nation.

- Colorado ranked 115th in the nation in kickoff returns in 2011; after the first game, the Buffs are ranked 26th nationally.

I'm certainly not a special teams coach, but I guess the idea is to put a hat on everyone else and rely on the returner to get past the long snapper or call for a fair catch if there isn't enough space. I think our blocking, both on offense and special teams, still leaves a lot to be desired. Not sure how much of it is talent and how much is coaching.

Plus, did you know that he can punt with both feet?

As I posted on rivals, having a long average punt is not necessarily a good thing. Punts mean your offense failed; long punts mean your offense failed deep in their own territory.

Bump skiing gave Bloom the ability to make incredibly quick cuts. Or the fact that he could make incredibly quick cuts made him a great bump skier. Or something.

no. you can have a gazillion punts at 43.8 yds/punt or 1 for 43.8. besides you rarely are punting for less than 40 yds of field position.

The CSU punter had 2 60+ yard punts and O'Neil beat his average by something like 6 yards. That tells me the CSU punter has a big leg, but didn't get to use it that often.

Here's my real point: I would rather have a 0.0 yard average per punt. humph
