What do you hope to learn about this team by the end? Seems to me, the three main areas that will have a large impact on the team, but are unsettled at the moment, are:

1. Cornerback
2. The left side of the offensive line
3. Quarterback

I think it is probably wishful thinking to have all three areas sorted out in the next month, but at the very least, I hope we have a clear idea of the QB starter so there are no question marks heading into the summer. I expect the kicking competition to heat up when Oliver joins the fold.

Thoughts? Also, is anyone planning on making any of the practices?

Attitude- above all else, I want the coaches to breed a since of toughness into this team. As long as they start that the position battles will take care of themselves.

I realize it's too much to ask, but it would be nice having a guy going into summer practices as the #1 QB. We've gotten used to hearing endless lines of bullsh*t from Hawkins about how it's an open competition right up to the week before the first game. That's worked out really well, hasn't it? I'd prefer to have one guy get the majority of snaps so he'll feel comfortable running the offense once they step on the field in Honolulu.

Thats about all I ask for. And get out of spring ball healthy!

No doubt. Rip Scherer has an interesting job ahead of him.

As nice as it would be to have a #1 QB identified coming out of Spring ball, I'm not so sure that one guy is truly going to establish himself, so this thing may carry over to fall out of necessity.

If Embree can seperate the men from the boys this spring, that would have to be considered a success.

I am with Sacky and Boulder Buff on this one. I want to see a great competition at the QB spot with the coaches picking a number 1 if at all possible by the end of Spring. I do think this position is one where we might see a change which may cause it to go into the fall, but I would love to see one of these guys step up and take the position.

Position questions in order of importance:

1. QB: Does Hansen look good in the new offense? Are the other two close enough to warrant a real competition?
2. CB: Who is going to play CB? Beyond Pugh, Bell, and Hawkins, who do we have that won't lose us games?
3. LT: Does Bahktiari switch over? Does Givens get in here? Does Harris step up?
4. TE: After Deehan, who do we have? Thornton looked good at times last season, who's going to step up from the young guys?

Best part of spring camp? No ****ing Hawk and his clown coaches.

QB and secondary are the biggest question marks to me.

Tight End position is pretty interesting as well. It has been so underutilized you can't say that Deehan is a shoe in to start.

With an entirely new system and coaching staff there are bound to be some key contributors who don't fit in with what the coaches want to do, and there are bound to be some others who contribute more than we would have expected because they are a better fit with Embree's system - I'm looking forward to seeing who falls into these categories.

Also, I'm really looking forward to seeing what crazy hijinks that stuffed monkey gets into this season.

CB is the biggest and having a QB named after spring would be nice. What defensive front we're going to play is another. Will it be a 3-4 or the standard 4 man front.

QB battle- Will Hirshman or Burnette push Hansen for the number 1 spot. Hirshman improvement from year 1 to year 2 in College.

CB- Who will emerge as replacments for Jimmy Smith and Jalil.

Linebackers- Major coming back from major surgery, who will replace Micheal Sippili in the middle and BJ on the outside.

Widerecievers- P Richardson, is he ready to become a dominant number 1 reciever.

Running backs- really want to take a look at C Allen, will he be the power back that is lacking from last year.

TE-Thornton, my candidate for break out player

DL- Bonsu, will he push for a starting positon

DE- Kasa, will he have a huge year at DE

And above all that has already been said, establishing an identity! And getting the sour taste of the Hawkins era finally out of here!

We need Major to stay healthy, but I am really not too concerned about the LBs, mostly because I have low expectations there. We have not been all that good there since Dizon left.

No worries about the WRs, provided we stay healthy.

We need Bonsu to either be a starter or getting nearly as much playing time as the starters if we are going to hold up on the DL this year.

QB- Mostly looking at the back-ups because whoever emerges here will likely be the starter in '12.
RB-Back-up RB. See above. And we need a solid #2 option for Speedy
CB-Ruh roh

1. I want to see if we will run the ball
2. After we run the ball, I want to see if we will run the ball.
3. I want to see if the coaches are going to fix special teams.
4. Did I mention running the ball?

do you think we should run the ball?

I'm going to try an make it for an hour or so. I first and foremost want to see that we are running coherent practices (for the first time in 5 years) and that Embree has the respect and attention of the players.

It's probably not something that we'll be able to tell from spring ball, but we absolutely MUST improve on special teams. All facets of special teams. Kicking, punting, kick returns, punt returns, coverage. I don't know for sure, but it sure seemed like we were giving up between 50-100 yards a game in field position last year because our special teams flat out sucked.

Not sure how much we will be able to tell about special teams, but I think we should be able to gauge at least some improvement. We looked dreadful in some spring games on special teams under Hawkins. I remember a lot of spin afterward, but it is hard to feel very confident when you see a team struggling just to protect the punter.

#1 - Offensive Identity: Can the RB, WR, QB, TE, and OL all come out and say what they are going to do. When they line up, are they all on the same page, and can they make adjustments based on how the defense lines up.
#2 - Defensive Identity: Do we have a strategy to attack, or are we sitting back and reacting. Does everyone know what their assignment is, and can they adjust to the offense.
#3 - Special teams: This probably can't be answered in spring ball, but given how bad we have been at special teams it will be interesting to see if we at least have some resemblence of a strategy.

1. Attitude
2. Identity
3. Intensity
4. Final 2 QBs decided by the spring game then you have all summer to beat one another out, competition breads better players.

How would a summer of 7-on-7 drills without coaches provide any real semblance of a competition? The whole "competition breeds better players" works only to a point when it comes to the QB position. The starter needs to be getting a lot of reps more than anything, especially with a new offense.

Now if one guy cannot separate from the pack, that is one thing, but to go into the spring with the plan of whittling three QBs down to a top two... that is drifting back into Dan Hawkins territory.

No I mean have a starter, but also a back-up who will fight to try and become the starter. Competition does breed better players IMO.

I don't expect much in the beginning. The new staff will need to implement their style, schedule, ways of doing things, etc. Pretty much a new learning experience for all involved. After the first 5 practices or so, it should be running a little smoother.

Because of this, I'd be interested if there is a change or increase in intensity, focus, and speed in which the drills are conducted.
