According to the ESPN offense and defense efficiency ratings, the Buffs are ranked #92 in offense and #82 in defense. These rankings are based upon point contributions of the unit to the team's scoring margin on a per play basis and is adjusted for the strength of schedule.
I think what is interesting, is that I thought we would have been ranked in the top 50% before the season. I thought with a returning QB, good wide outs and a mostly veteran offense line, we would be ok. However, it looks like injuries have crippled us and we lack depth. Which leads me to another point, I wish we would have taken the beginning of the season with a more take it game by game. CU got all caught up in going for a bowl that they forgot how hard it is to win each week. We need to learn how to win each quarter, each game week by week before we get caught up in going to a bowl and all of that. The statistics do not lie, we are struggling.
 
This. As a fanbase, we seemed to overwhelmingly believe that if we could just get the D down to the 80s, we would win games on the strength of our returners on offense.

I certainly thought after last years performance by the offense that we'd be just as good this year. That clearly has not happened.

Yeah, I don't think many people saw this kind of offensive regression happening.

I dont think any of us saw the significant drop-off in O-Line play coming.



 
Also, our defense in conference has been just as bad as last year, I think. Giving up 7 yards per play.
 
Really do not think all the blame needs to go on the Oline. A lot of it is Sefo hanging on to the ball to long. Also, he needs to step up or stand in the pocket and deliver the ball. Not giving the Oline a waiver here, they do have their issues, but it can't all fall on them.
 
Despite his issues, Sefo is in the top half of the conference in offensive production and squarely in the middle in efficiency since the start of conference play. The running game and defense are near the bottom or at the bottom. Does this sound familiar?

The eye test says our defense is much improved in conference play, IMO. However, the average score of our Pac 12 games last year was 43-29, while this year (through 3 games) it is 42-26. Negligible improvement on defense and slight regression on offense so far, but not as much as I would have said without looking at the numbers.
 
The eye test is failing, mostly. Although we are improved (turnovers!!) in some areas, we are just as bad in defending the other team from going forward. Last year we gave up 7.1 yards per play. This year 7.

Rushing defense is WORSE. 5.9 yard/play last year. 6.1 yard per play this year.
passing defense is "better": 8.4 yard/play last year. 8.3 yard per play this year.
Pass def efficiency 168 last year. 160 this year. That's where our turnovers are showing up.

And we still have some very good offenses to face. Yikes.
 
The offensive line has been a huge disappointment. We should NEVER have that problem at CU. This program was built on good-great offensive line play. MikeMac: please get us back to that and hopefully the rest will fall into place.
 
The defense is forcing enough turnovers and getting enough stops for the Buffs to have won a few more games at this point. The offense has been good in spurts, but has failed at delivering key drives and scores in big moments.
 
CU has not played a Ranked Team yet - so our SOS is way weaker than last year to date. Arizona State is the best defense we have faced and they are 6th in the conference. Oregon and Arizona are both two of the weaker defenses out there. The good news is we play Oregon State next which is also a weak defense but after that it gets bad - Stanford, USC, Utah, are all in the upper half of the conference.
 
The D is more dynamic and making more stops, but allowing just as many points in conference. The O has regressed. ST about the same. As if I needed any more evidence Mac isn't the guy...which I hate to say cuz I like the guy and thought he had the chops.
 
To me it is all about the rushing both offensively and defensively. We are averaging 84 yard a game on offense and giving up almost 300 ypg on defense- stats for in conference.. You don't win with that.

Man, when we say baby steps, we mean small incremental baby steps. So this might be a really long crawl out of the hole under the basement.

How can the defense be making more stops but allowing just as many points?

Not Really. Last year we had 10 Turnovers after 7 games, this year 9 and this year we actually are winning the TO battle. The reason is the defense is about the same as last year - we make some stops with the other team turning over the ball but when they don't turn it over they score more.

Honestly, its pretty simple to me.

I figured our defense would be in the 80's-90's in total defense. We also wanted a defense who produced more turnovers and we've seen that. I am not sure why people thought we were going to have that much of a better defense. We are still very weak in the front 7 and its evident.

The issue we are seeing is lackluster play on the oline and qb play. The Hawaii game was a complete disaster for our oline as well as qb play. We've seen glimpses of better play since then, but it has taken a huge step back from 2014. We have play-makers at the WR and RB position, but having a hell of a time at consistently getting them the ball. Its starting to become very frustrating and you have to know the coaches see the exact same thing.

I expected our offense to be close to last year and have a defense that produced more turnovers, gave me hope in a team that could sniff a bowl. However, we have completely regressed at the oline and qb positions.

I do think we are a more veteran team, a little faster, and a little stronger than last year. Yet we haven't taken a step forward in 2015, I don't care what the coaches say. The numbers show it and the record shows it.

Can't argue against those points...pretty self-evident...sadly...
 
Anyone else think the lost of Munyer and Crabb was a bigger impact then originally thought. Add Irwin in there and our top 3 Olinemen from last year are gone.

Yes, there was a lot of excitement about the rushing game after scrimmaging through the OOC schedule, I didn't want to be negative about it, but it wasn't the real competition yet...
