I confess that i don't know much about the guy. I know he was a coach at CSU under Lubick during their glory years. But that's about it. I was surfing the net and i found a couple of quotes out there. Here are a few.

Adding to the excitement over the Bills is the up-tempo, aggressive-minded offense Schonert has installed. Under Fairchild, Buffalo was painfully predictable, but Schonert believes in constantly challenging a defense and making it as uncomfortable as possible with the use of multiple looks and different formations.

He replaces Steve Fairchild, who recently became Colorado State's coach after two seasons with the Bills. Schonert inherits an offense ranked 30th in the league the past two seasons under Fairchild.

It's almost too good to be true. This year, Steve Fairchild has been much maligned for the Buffalo Bills' offensive production - whether deserved or not - and many fans were calling for his head. Well, they got their wish... in a manner of speaking.

Instead of relying on the ever-faithful, ever-loyal Dick Jauron to make the tough decision of firing the mostly ineffective Fairchild in the offseason and moving on to someone else, the Bills offensive coordinator was wooed by another team to take their head coaching spot. For Bills fans, it couldn't get any better.

Here's another good blog from a loyal Bills fan. I didn't know that JP Losman called out Fairchild for lack of creativity when playcalling. Looks like Shortbus Version 2.0:
Losman’s postgame suggestion that the offense needs more wideopen play-calling did not bother him at all.
“He’s a good kid,” Fairchild said. “We talk all the time. We obviously talk before and during [the game], and I always spend time with him after a game. He’s a good, solid team guy. I don’t see any issue there.”

...I’m angry at Marv Levy for hiring Jauron as head coach of the Bills. Jauron has a horrible won-lost record as a head coach in this league. I’m angry with Jauron for hiring Steve Fairchild as offensive coordinator of the Bills. Offensive is the proper word when describing Fairchild’s game planning and play calling. I’m angry with Fewell for allowing so many big plays this season, especially those losses to Denver and Dallas – not to mention the Browns and the Giants who ate up monstrous yards on the ground....

...I can absolve those players because these coordinators required them to play THEIR system rather than putting in schemes that would suit the talents of the players as Ted Marchibroda did when he was the offensive coordinator of the Bills during the glory days.

Naturally – as I have for most of the season – Steve Fairchild is my favorite whipping boy. This guy is leaving – thank goodness. Fairchild’s game planning and play calling has been a mystery to Bills fans. Take Sunday’s loss to the Eagles. When TV announcers know exactly what the play will be….imagine how the defenses must have laughed when they, too, took advantage of the predictability to stuff the Bills.

After the game, wide receiver Josh Reed took the unveiled shot at Fairchild's play calling, citing the fact that the Bills wouldn't spread the offense. He said that defenses knew this and sat on the routes, saying that an 8-year old could call defensive signals.

Fairchild has the creativity and imagination of a wart in the belly button. Look at the Bills, deep in Eagle territory in the 4th quarter. It’s 4th and a couple of chain links. Does he call a QB sneak that certainly makes it? No – he calls a handoff in the backfield and Marshawn Lynch is stopped short of the first down marker. A sneak keeps the drive alive and maybe a tying touchdown (with a 2-point conversion.) That's only one example of scores of others that caused a lot of head scratching. Where is Jauron to over-ride his calls. Mr. "No-Smile" simply stares...

...Take a look at the season and I hope you’ll agree with me that J.P. Losman and Trent Edwards should not be blamed as much as Fairchild (and Jauron for letting him plan and call the plays.) JP and Trent are victims as are the other offensive players. This was the most predictable, conservative, no excitement offense since the days of Gary Marangi....

...Get an offensive coordinator that will create, with imagination, an offense that will suit the talents of Trent Edwards or J.P. Losman (if he’s still here next season.) Let’s not have any talk of Schonert or Van Pelt. What you’ll be getting with either of them is what you’ve seen in the past two years with Fairchild - a status quo that isn't acceptable.

Looking at the situation he created for himself in Buffalo, he saw the heat coming and bailed. I found all of this on Google typing 'Steve Fairchild Buffalo Bills'. Just about everyone was calling for him to be fired.

Bills fans everywhere need to thank CSU and their Athletic Dept. for taking Stevie off of Buffalo's hands.
 
People in the NFL weren't too fond of Pete Carroll, either.

Not saying that Fairchild will be the next Pete Carroll -- but you never know!

Head coach wise.. They thought he was a good dc in SF when he was there..


Not sure what to think of Fairchild.. The program is kind of at the bottom, so they can't go much lower..
 
Here's a question: how many fans are actually happy with the performance of their offensive coordinator in a given season?

When your team is placing 30th two straight years and your players are calling you out. Then it's time to go. Juaron wouldve fired him if CSU didn't come into the picture.

And before anyone brings up his stint as OC at St. Louis, everyone knows Martz called all the shots there.

The following is from his Wikipedia Bio.

NFL coaching career
In 2001, Fairchild was hired by the Buffalo Bills to serve as running backs' coach. He left for the St. Louis Rams in 2003 where he served as an assistant offensive coordinator for three seasons, before returning to the Bills in 2006 for a season-and-a-half as the head offensive coordinator. Bills fans became frustrated with his vanilla offense and preseason promises to "open up the offense" that he never honored. His playcalling became known as "Run run pass punt" because it was so predictable. In one instance, television announcers were able to accurately predict the Bills' playcalling repeatedly.

Thanks, Val for all of the work on Fairchild. While there are always posts roasting coordinators, it is another thing when the players are also unhappy.
Excellent insights into what the Buffs should be facing on Sunday.

I feel exactly the same way. He's from the town where I spent the first half of my life so there's sort of a hometown appeal to the guy. I wish him the best (after this coming weekend is over anyway).
