Do we need to make a change here or do you guys like Jeff Pittman?

My concerns are with the knee injuries we have seen and the video that found its way to the internet that showed bad technique being taught for lifts. The two might be related. Also, some guys seem to be having trouble gaining weight despite Pitt's famous weight gainer shakes.

There is word being circulated that Pittman is going to present his case to Embree on why he should be retained.
 
I will be pissed if he is retained.... one of my least favorite coaches from the previous staff (and that is saying something).
 
Sorry to Pittman, but he needs to go. Lack of form from that video is seriously troubling.
 
Injuries + both lines getting dominated by the opposition = acceptable scapegoat. I'd like to see new blood in the S&C program and hope it gets better.
 
Time for a change here. I would think Embo would have better options based on his time with other programs. Bring in your own guy Embo
 
They have to keep him. Otherwise, we will not get to hear how the team is as strong as it has ever been... every single offseason.

I have no idea how that affects players in games, but it looks like you could blow a knee out during the workout.

You know, I'm just cautious. I like using machines, where I can do a movement, but fairly limited in how I might hurt myself.

That form just looks wrong to me. Always has.

You can't use machines, but you do need to have proper form. The scary thing is that everyone was using horrible form. I can't see the video right now, but from what I remember those squats they were doing were like what you see dumb high school kids doing. Waay too much weight on the bar causing scary form plus they weren't even doing full reps.

Machines are terrible. Absolutely a joke, but they are good for people that don't have coaching. Our boys do. You can only work your stabilizers with free weights and not a machine. Strong stabilizer muscles are needed in sports, especially football, for leverage and other reasons. They also prevent injuries. If I was S&C coach I would get rid of every machine there and also those stupid arm curl racks. Ugh.

In the power clean your feet are supposed to jump out. HOWEVER, they are not supposed to jump out that far. Imagine jumping (that's what you are supposed to do combined with a heavy shoulder shrug). When you land your feet are always outside of where they were when you initially jumped. A little bit is fine, a lot is damaging to your knees. My former Oly lifting coach knew of guys who blew out their knees in a power clean doing exactly what our guys are doing. Our guys' knees are pointing heavily inward while their feet are heavily outside. BAD.

The power clean is essential for football. If we don't do that we get blown out by every team in the country. It works your vertical and explosiveness like no other. We don't need to do full cleans or snatches though.

The squat....I've gone off about the form on that. Powerlifters would be in horror if they saw that. Abysmal.

Get rid of him.
 
First time I've seen the video. I'd have to watch it again to be sure, but I think I saw one move done correctly in that whole video - Nicholas' squat. More weight does not equal better if you are throwing your back, knees and hips around like that. A lot of the guys almost fall on their arse during the cleans. In fact, I'd bet money there is video of several guys eating it under Pit's watch. Pittman wants to tell everyone how much stronger the team is every year, so he's got them using ****ty form to push a little more weight.
 
Machines are fine if you don't have a spotter. But damn that's terrible form.

Machines are not fine if you are trying for maximum gains which our football players should be. Also, you need those stabilizer muscles that NM was talking about.
 
no, no, no. I don't mean OUR GUYS should use machines, I mean that I do, because I am ancient and just trying to keep the ole body from falling apart.

I mentioned machines only to say, that I am the kind of person who goes to 24-hour fitness and does my prescribed circuit so I stay semi-fit and don't hurt anything important.

It was a disclaimer to say that I admit I don't do much with free weights, so I can't judge with any authority, but it looks like to me that is terrible form. The pressure on the knees with the heavy weight and the jumping outward just looks wrong.
 
Yes I realize that BUT lifting without a spotter can be dangerous and that's why I said that machines are fine IF you don't have a spotter.
 
What's the deal with Mad Dog? I may be thinking of someone else, but isn't he a fat guy? I don't like fat guys being the authority on fitness, strength, and nutrition for our football team...that's just me.
 
Beyond the form, the emphasis on Olympic lifts is old school thinking. I'm not an expert on S&C, but that is my understanding. As NMBuff said, you want to be doing power cleans but a lot of the other stuff is not in line with current thinking.

But back to the form issue, I shudder to think of guys like Max, Iltis and Major being asked to lift in that way shown on the video given their histories with knee problems.
