Student section has raised its game - they need a nickname

Numerous reports of chants directed at the referees such as "Take his whistle" and Martin "Don't have a heart attack". So much better than yelling "FU" or "BS". I'm not crazy about the mom smack that was directed at a KSU player (I think you stay away from family), but even that's an improvement. At least we're starting to get inside opponents' heads and take them out of their game.

I'm looking forward to watching this build. Eventually, I want the rep of being the toughest place to play in the west -- particularly the Pac-12. If we deliver a packed house and a crazy student section to go with the altitude and noisiness of the Keg (plus it gets hot in there), teams are going to fear playing there.

So what nickname should we give our student section?

"Coors Crazies" is too derivative, but something like that would be appropriate. Any ideas?

we need to figure out what a keg stand is too. Maybe when we all stand before we score our first points.

on TV, looked like the students were having more than a little "give and take" with the KSU fans behind the Cat bench. looked like real college basketball environment to me....no more of hearing conversations across the gym during play.

I love calling the ritual at the beginning of the game the "Keg Stand".

On a related note, what would you guys think of having the student section wrap around the entire (or most of) the court as some schools do as opposed to having it all behind the basket. Would the loss of some ticket revenue be acceptable to create a better atmosphere?

buffnik will not appreciate this post

I'm not sure it would create a better atmosphere. Especially for the students, I don't think it would be as much fun.

I'm all for an expanded student section, though I'd prefer to see you take over the GA section behind the other basket so both ends got noisy and players got heckled or cheered coming in and out of the tunnels.

Or at least let you take over the corner sections of the end you're in. I think if we're winning that there's a ton of room to increase season ticket prices for men's basketball (or at least add a Buff Club donation to the season ticket price). We can easily make up for the lost revenue that comes with having an expanded student section.

A couple few thangs:

1)I like the idea of standing until the OTHER team scores a bucket and making noise on DEFENSE. It'd be unique and it actually makes sense.

2)Coors Kooks. The Foam Freaks. The Foam. Rocky Mountain Rabble Rousers.

3)If we were winning, student tickets would generate more revenue. I don't know what they charge now, but when I was a student season tickets to basketball games were almost free.

Still basically the same way. They are an add on to the Football season tickets. I think they are something like $40 or $35 extra. If the team makes a tourney run this season I see that changing in the near future.

we already do that, or at least the PA guy tells us to.

I disagree. I was just watching the Illinois game they have their student section spread around the court on court level. It looks very intimidating and also pretty cool on TV. The Duke student section wouldn’t have nearly the lore it does if it were behind the basket as opposed to spanning the half-court. Obviously the problem with this is that it would eliminate many of the high priced tickets.

I'm fine with it either way. I would note, though, that we've seen a lot of the student section gains since the move behind the basket. Also, if you watch the videos from Utah State you'll see that great student section is seated behind a basket. It can be done well both ways.

And, frankly, basketball tickets are so cheap right now that it's kind of a non-issue when we talk about lost ticket revenue. Anything that makes games more of an event and helps us get to consistent sellouts will significantly raise the demand for tickets and that's where the money is. Heck, people had an opportunity to buy season tickets in the corners this year for $120 and get 17 home games for that. Even with only 10 really good games in that mix (8 conference games, Oregon State & CSU) we're talking about $12 a game plus 7 bonus games. No donation on top of that. Free parking. It's a good deal at double the price.

So what I care about is building a great game environment that carries our team to victory like it did, in particular, for the Oklahoma State game this year. Winning drives revenue. And students who leave with great basketball memories become season ticket holders. Basketball is very different than football in that we're almost building from nothing here. Some day I hope to be worried about the premium value of various seats. Not today.

As far as a nicknames go, my #1 choice would be "Ralphie's Disciples". And there should be a blackout every game, or at least some form of coordinated dress.

I also like "Buffalo Soldiers” but I think the Nancy Pelosi loving Boulder establishment would have a problem with it.

Do you guys not like C-Unit?

I never have. I think it's boring.

btw, is anyone here involved now or was in the past with the C-Unit organizational stuff? I'm curious how much goes into working on specific chants for each game, special t-shirts, etc. This is something that AllBuffs could probably help with.

For big games they hand out a sheet of paper called "buffalo chips" which has some dirt on the other teams players with chants to go with them, its a good concept but they never hand out enough.

If C-Unit is gonna stick I think that Nike needs to fully sponsor a game and distribute the shirts to the entire student section. All of the big schools have a student section that have the same shirts for the most part. Some kind of coordination for cheers would be useful too. The cheer leaders are ok at this but there needs to be something else. The new video of the players asking the fans to get on their feet last night was awesome. We need more of that kind of thing and actually use our new video boards.

that was the first game they used that clip with the players right? that was perfect.

Ya im in the pep band so I have been to every home game this season. That was the first time I have seen them do any video like that. IMO they need more of them and use them more often. We need something for slams I think. either a video or a crowd response. To keep the energy going from that kind of thing.
