Sucks to lose... but I'm encouraged

Buffs could have won tonight.

Outgained ASU.

Early turnover by Sefo when he didn't see the safety.

Awful fumble by Adkins.

Couldn't convert a 4th and short in the red zone.

Pass Interference call on a 3rd and long that gave ASU a first down on a series that led to a touchdown.

That's stuff you can fix and progress beyond.

We certainly didn't deserve to win tonight and even if the Buffs had taken care of business we might very well have lost, but even in the loss and the mistake-prone performance I thought I saw a lot of progression. We're not good, but I don't know that we're bad any more.

I'm looking forward to next week versus Hawaii.
 
Disappointed in fan base. We lost half the crowd at halftime. 10pm too late? 57 degrees too cold?
 
I'm really encouraged by what I saw tonight. First quarter ASU had 222 yards of offense and we trailed eventually 17-0. Then it seems like the defense came more alive. Anyone else agree? I think they got some confidence. Offense clicked more. We outlined ASU in total offense. I really thought we'd win but hey, I'll take it!
 
I was also encouraged. Had our chances to collapse and lose by 60, but didn't. I feel a lot better losing because of turnovers than due to getting ran all over and being unable to stop it.

I was also glad we turned up the heat on defense. We don't have the talent to play people straight up, gotta blitz and put pressure on them. It didn't result in any turnovers tonight, but it should more often than not. Better than just playing vanilla crap and letting teams march down the field on us.
 
Certainly the most encouraged I've been about a loss in years. Maybe ever. Of course, that's testament to just how pathetically abysmal we've been recently, but something about this performance tonight by a CU team in cutting edge helmets in the backdrop of a $143 million Folsom upgrade really does feel like we're on the long road up to reaching bowl games again in coming seasons. Please, please, please let this finally be the case.
 
Just returned from the game. It actually looked like a football team out there. And while I've gotten numb to the sting of losing, I found myself having fun tonight. Seriously, like a real football team!
 
The good:

Despite Adkins not taking the step forward I was hoping for as a sophomore (injuries?), Jones ran hard and has speed. Powell is Powell who can still surprise you with big runs despite not having the speed to take it all the way to the house. Lindsay has been the back his coach said he would be. If they could all just finish their runs with a score or a tackle instead of making themselves trip and fall...

Hendo got beat a couple of times but he is a fighter and still our best corner. Knows how to disrupt a pass if he gets to the right spot.

The defense didn't fold in the 2nd half.

Now, the bad:

Standard missed tackles or defenders just plain getting juked out of their shoes.

OL continued troubles. Early on I saw Munyer get pushed back 5 yards into Sefo like it was nothing. ASU put additional rush pressure on the left side and CU did not account for it well at all with their blockers. Irwin's concussion. Still no sign of Shane Callahan.

As soon as I saw the goalline run was going to Lindsay I knew we were going to get shut out. Bad call and bad execution.

Penalties like Moeller's on the kick return, DD's holding, and a false start late worked against the momentum we were building with the ASU offense stalled as Kelly was out. We have to be there all the way mentally for the entire game to stand a chance, since physically we are so overmatched.

The fans. That 4th quarter rally should've had the C-Unit leading the noise all the way. Stay until the end and make it sound like the 2011 Cal game. Energizes our side and works against theirs.

If the team shows up like this every game for the rest of the season they will win at least one conference game. Have to eliminate the small mistakes like not picking up a block assignment or committing drive-killing penalties. But the fight is there and the talent is young but promising. Looking forward to a performance that hopefully does not play down to Hawaii's level of competition and something that can instill confidence and build on the experience these underclassmen are quickly getting. Hurts to lose another one but there's plenty for the team to learn from this by reviewing the game. Go Buffs.
 
Not sure what to think. Happy we had "hope" towards the end.... just pissed we squandered so many chances
 
Man, what could've been, had the ball and all the momentum 14-17 then the fumble. Not saying we would've won but you never know.

Also the slooooow start killed us.
 
Sadly, I believe that was the best game the Buffs have played in over 3 seasons. I too am anxious to see if they can carry some momentum into the Hawaii and cal games.
 
Call me encouraged as well.

The running game showed up.

We had several sustained drives.

Our third down efficiency was pretty good and their's was not. A nice change.

Gehrke did well and I liked Lee and Lindsay's games too.

We played the #16 team in the country pretty well yesterday. Our kids have some losses and bumps ahead of them but they are getting better. I hope they can maintain that scrappy spirit and I hope potential recruits can see the progress and not just the losses.

It will be interesting to see what this team is like when every player is a kid HCMM recruited.
 
The game was encouraging, especially the 2 qtr D when ASU was at full strength. But if Kelly didn't go down, they were scoring a bunch more. Gotta, gotta, gotta stop the turnovers. Killers.

They only had 3 drives without Kelly. We stopped them several times with him in the game. Disagree that they would've scored a "bunch more".
 
Interesting that a turning point for SJSU under Mac was actually a loss (albeit a closer loss) to a physically superior opponent. Impossible to predict it, but hopefully even in defeat something sparks with these guys and they carry it with them for the rest of the season.

Reasonably encouraged. Of course, I would prefer a win, but if you had told me CU would be within 2 TD's I would have thought there was improvement. They looked like a decent team last night, holding their own against a top 20 opponent. Still baffled by no Callahan, especially when Mustoe and Huckins go in, despite the depth chart, but at this point what could it matter?
 
Plenty to be encouraged about, these guys didn't bitch up and quit. We can't afford to turn it over, especially on our 15 or 20, whatever it was. We left quite a few points on the field as well. Had some bad penalties as well. Fields and DLee give us that speed we've been looking for. Let's see if they can take this and make a leap forward.
 
One of the best things to come out of this game was how well the team responded and hung in there when it looked like we were headed for another epic beatdown after the first quarter. And this came against a pretty good (albeit clearly over-rated) Pac team, not a lowly team like UMass.

+1 We were in this game until the end, and the fans should have been too. Could have helped inject energy and also make our program look better on ESPNU
 
I know moral victories are for losers and all, but we actually beat ASU in most statistical categories that matter except of course a big one which is turnovers. Not bad against a top 20 team and one of the most prolific offenses in the country.

And with these stats, our 500 yards of offense came AFTER the first quarter. 222 of ASU's offensive production came in the first quarter. I can't believe I am going to say this but we dominated them statistically after the slow start. Couple of big plays like the big run they had early in the 2nd half and our turnovers really cost us.

BUT does anyone else now think we can go into any game at Folsom- UCLA, Washington, etc- and be competitive.

the team grew up this game. Exciting!

Moral victories are for losers, obviously. I'm sick of our 1-2 moral victories a year. How can Sefo not throw a football accurately to his left? That's 50% of the field! I never even knew that sort of thing was possible.

I felt the glee I have not experienced in years right before the Adkins fumble :shot:. Thought I saw something last week and I did. We are playing some football. It's painful, but we are pretty close to clicking as a real live football team.

Lindsay, Fields, Spruce all have star potential. Spruce is already the rock!

I am encouraged by the progress.
 
We cannot come out flat to begin a game. We didn't have a first down until well into the game. Our first series we went 3 and out. We let ASU march right down the field on their first two possessions and put us down 14-0 right off the bat. Can't do that. We need to come out and establish ourselves. NO MORE SLOW STARTS!!
