Takeaways as the Spring Portal Winds Down

I wanted to start this thread to see what questions, comments, and concerns we have after all the roster movement (both in and out). No current Buffs can hit the portal (unless they want to lose a year of eligibility), but still plenty of talent already in the portal that could commit to CU. I have a few initial thoughts, but excited to see what others have to say.

1. You have to give credit where credit is due. CU staff/Prime has effectively addressed the offensive line issues from a talent acquisition perspective. Bringing six new portal acquisitions (not to mention solid high school talent), with I would say 2-3 being starter quality players, in combination with some already proven guys from last year, you really have to think we have the pieces to be successful. Namely, I think picking up Larry Johnson III to compete at the right tackle spot is huge, as it allows Xavier Hill (a f*cking dawg) to slide inside to the right guard at 6'4. At least on paper, this looks like a physically dominant O-line.

2. The receiving core is so far out of control. I will keep this short as there is not much that isn't self-explanatory. The pickup of Hykeem Williams and Sincere Brown was just pure gluttony....... and I love every second of it. The spread of athletes we have in that room is wild, I mean a plethora of 6'+ jump ball athletes, while also having promising slot guys (Drelon, Hardge, Gibson). The room is so damn deep and physically gifted I could even seen a Quanell Farrakhan Jr. a strong framed guy slide into the slot instead of the outside X. I think that room is just so dominant, it has the chance to be better than last year. I think if Kaidon Salter was drunk and high, he could find an open man downfield.

3. The issue of Harrison Taggert. We all watched that guy fly around and beat our ass in the Alamo bowl. We're paper-thin at LB, he basically would have been a shoe-in starter. Our D-line is the best in the Big 12. We make it to his top three, competing against solid schools, albeit no blue bloods. Yet we lose the recruiting battle? Look, maybe I am being spoiled in this era of Prime's recruitment and pull in the portal, but man, I can't help but wonder how we did not get him? A seemingly perfect fit for Harrison, with talented players around him to help make plays, a starting role, and national attention, yet he lands at Cal? Maybe there are reasons I'm not aware of, but it just raises questions for me. Are we losing in NIL battles for top portal targets, like in this stage of the portal were we just not able to make a strong enough offer? I have heard a lot of criticism of coach Andre' Hart (linebackers coach), which I haven't looked into nor understand. Maybe that's it? Taggert just seemed to be a must-get piece to round out of of the most exciting defenses in the nation. Any insight on this would be great, or if anyone knows any other LB's we may be recruiting to transfer in.

4. Roster mismanagement?!?!? How the f*ck are we going to lose Colton Hood a starting SEC caliber CB because we asked his brother Brandon Hood to leave the team. In a blog post by Buffs Blog (love this site, super high quality articles needs more love ASAP) https://buffsblog.com/dealing-with-roster-math-whos-up-next/ :
"CU has 71 scholarship football players as of today. THEREFORE — to be fully funded from a scholarship standpoint, CU needs to add 34 more scholarship football players to the roster from now until the start of the season to get up to 105 players."

So why did we ask Brandon to leave even after he had quite a promising spring, in a thin RB room, then losing Colton, our starting CB, as we also have a thin CB room!!!! The problem was not roster space. It just looks like straight mismanagement leading to an NFL talent leaving. Maybe there is an angle or situation I am not aware of, but man was that frustrating to see. Having Colton and Taggert on the roster would really firm up the only two thin position groups.

There is no incentive or logic of getting to 105. We aren’t ever going to that level.

Please inform your alter ego at Buffsblog.
:ROFLMAO:. Your 100% right, I should have contextualized that a little more lol. The full quote is, "Now, do I think CU should add this many players to the roster in the next couple of months? Probably not. But does CU need to be at or near the previous 85 scholarship limit to have the depth to be competitive with teams in the Power 4 conferences? Absolutely."

It was more of a point that I'm asking Brandon Hood to leave (resulting in Colton leaving, package duo) seems quite silly, as we could benefit from having more than 71 scholarship players on the roster.

I think Prime looks at it like the NFL. 53-man roster plus 16-man roster size is 69 players to get through a longer season than CFB plays. He's already got that number, so I don't see him adding more for practice bodies or developmental guys. We might add a few guys still, but I think it would only be players that would be expected to impact the 2-deep in 2025.

Agreed. Any other portal pickups would likely be rounding out thin position rooms. To me still does not answer the question of having the Hood brother leave. Any thoughts on the Taggert situation?

No real thoughts on Taggert other than him being a really good LB I'd have been excited about. I don't get emotionally invested in recruiting targets any more. Hard to do so after so many years managing the recruiting forum and seeing that 90% of offers don't turn into a commitment and even official visitors have under a 50% hit rate. Only thing here that's bothering me is that it was a position of need, it's a position that doesn't see very many plug&play high end portal entries, and there was mutual interest. Not getting him was a bit of reinforcement to my belief that Coach Hart is the weak link on the staff.

Yea I can understand that, I see your posts literally everywhere. Is there any chance we see another linebacker come in for 2025 szn? Just wondering if you have any insight from the recruiting forum. I get much less excited for highschool vistors/targets, but I feel like in the prime era, when we get a portal guy on campus normally we can close. But as I'm typing this I am thinking of examples of portal visitors who didn't commit, so you're right.

No insight on anyone specifically. My expectation is that if Prime sees it as a priority that someone not currently in the portal (graduates can transfer at any time) will somehow learn of a great opportunity at CU with a much better financial deal than he's currently getting and join the program before Fall.

I would agree with this mindset if players were under contract and you knew how long they were for sure going to be in the program (like the NFL). Without that kind of certainty, you’re forced to backfill a decent amount of spots from the portal every year as there are fewer players on the team to develop and plug in.

I’m not convinced that a portal heavy strategy every year is sustainable long term, especially when it’s been stated that Prime isn’t going to “overpay” for a guy. Well, the portal is NFL free agency and overpaying is exactly what happens when NFL teams are trying to fill needs through FA.

So right now, Prime is of the mindset that he’s not going to fill out a large roster, which means there’s aren’t very many developmental guys on the team and he’s going to hit the portal hard every year… BUT he’s also not going to pay top $$ for true P4 impact starters in the portal. Something has to give and I hope he starts going harder after the blue chip HS prospects.

I think he's a long way from thinking that he should sign 10 preps a year who aren't going to be playable for at least a year - if they develop.

Then he can’t refuse to “overpay” for proven starters in the portal. Of course, this is all if he’s serious about a Natty. I mean, what he’s doing right now is potentially adequate for competing for Big 12 Championships but they aren’t remotely close to being able to win 2-3 playoff games.

Maybe the price tag for underclassman transfers isn't lower risk (more developed and closer to ready with more info on work habit character) without much more cost than signing those guys as preps. That's my theory and I'm actually more concerned with how small our sophomore class is than I am at how small our freshman class is.

If their developmental guys are transfers who have been in college for a season or two already then I can get behind that, but it kind of feels like those are guys we are potentially counting on right away because we don’t overpay for the proven starters and don’t really have a developmental pipeline of HS guys.

Makes me wonder what our bandwidth is for bluechip portal guys. I would say Oatis, Xavier Hill, and mayyyybe Sincere Brown would be considered blue chip or proven starters. I think the 2025 season plays a huge role in tipping the scale for Prime's high school recruiting. If CU wins the Big 12 this year, I think we sign two 5 star recruits in the 2026 class. However, I can see a regression aggressively devaluing CU's recruitment pull.

Hadn't even considered that. I'm cold-calling homeowner's in Hilltop, were getting that NIL $ for Anthony Hill Jr.

You don't have to believe Mathis, but he got into a twitter back and forth with the pastor and said that B Hood wasn't told to leave like the pastor was saying. Just realized he wasn't going to be as high on the depth chart as he wanted to be.

Hart sucks, that's pretty much all that there is to it. No other room seems to have trouble bringing in proven guys.
