Talked to a big time LSU fan about Les Miles today

I was at the mechanic today, and while they continued to rack up a hefty invoice for me this guy decked out in LSU gear comes in. I'm wearing a CU hat and CU jacket, and we get to talking.

I ask him what he thinks about Les Miles

"I hate him. You guys can have him."

How can you hate the guy? He has had you at the top of college football for the past decade +.

"He only won a national championship because Nick Saban left all the talent on the team, and all the assistants."

I say ok - but you guys are #4 in the nation right now.

"He's just a good coach, not a great coach like Nick Saban"

I ask him if he agrees that at least Miles can recruit

"No, not really. He only gets players because LSU is in Louisiana, the greatest state for football talent in the nation. Did you know that per capita, more players in the NFL are from Louisiana than any other state?"

At this point I basically let the conversation go.

I was a little shocked to hear this guy be so upset with a coach who has led them to so much success. I was also shocked to hear how much they compared him to Saban - like if LSU just pulled their heads out of their asses, they could fire Miles and get another Saban, no problem. Yeah - right. Saban is a one-of-a-kind coach in a one-of-a-kind situation.

Would love to take Miles off their hands. But of course, Benson, Distefano and Bohn will keep doing their best impression of the three blind mice.
 
Ungrateful,yea fire Les Miles get stuck with a Dan Hawkins ****** ass type of coach for 5 years and get back to us.

No, if they fire Miles they need to hire a "true Tiger". An LSU alum with ties to the program. HC or coordinator experience optional....

Ungrateful, yeah. But Les has benefitted from a very fortunate coaching situation there. The LSU fan was right about Louisiana, you can't throw a rock without hitting a D-1 prospect, and they rarely leave the state if they have an LSU offer, or risk being shamed by the community.

Gotta get the hot mid major coach first,then they can get Rohan Davey or whoever amongst Tiger alums are in the coaching biz

Les deserves criticism, but some of it is over the top, imo. Its not like they aren't competing for national championships. They are a contender every year.

Maybe I'm biased. I love coach Miles.
 
I wonder why Gerry DiNardo couldn't win at LSU. Seems like anyone who knows an X from an O should be able to, right? Miles obviously sucks. :wink2:

DiNardo had a kind of flippant attitude towards recruiting in state. He didn't put in the effort to lock down the talent he had right down the street. Warrick Dunn was from Baton Rouge, for example. One of the first things Saban did is lock Louisiana down, particularly New Orleans. And once he did that he could cherry pick from Florida, the Gulf Coast, and Houston. And once Saban won the BCS, that breed even more in state fandom. Saban handed the keys to this machine to Miles, and to Les' credit, he didn't screw it up like say a Ron Zook did at Florida. The other good thing he did was hire Chavis from Tennesee to run the defense, and they pay that guy 700 G's to do it. But Les thinks of himself as the de facto OC, and the further he gets away from Jimbo, the worse that offense gets. That's what really frustrates LSU fans. He's got all that talent on hand, and he keeps hiring OC retreads(Crowton, Kragthorpe) and no-names to run the offense, while he meddles with the playcalling. Some teams they can get away with it because they have the horses, but anybody that's pretty good, like Florida today, and they put up 6 points.

Les calls the plays...the offense has been miserable this year so he does deserve some criticism in that regard.

The initial argument against him was that it was Saban's team. But by the time they won the National Championship it was essentially his team minus a handful of five year players.

I'm not convinced that Chavis isn't the reason they have been a top ten team under the watch of Les. Yes he did inherit a national championship team, that makes things a lot easier. The LSU fanbase are waay past crazy when it comes to calling for his firing, which I hear every year they don't win the title. They also put on the best game day atmosphere in the country in my opinion.

Nope. I think he's good at what he's doing at LSU, but I don't think he would be able to duplicate anywhere near that success at CU. Maybe a bowl game or two. As a name hire, he'd be nice, but with the x's and o's, I think he's got a bit of Hawkins' in him.

This year's LSU team is not as good as last's year team. End of story. Miles does not have an offensive co-ordinator. He's the ofensive line coach - not a play caller.

Until the NCAA puts the kibosh on the **** the SEC gets away with, no one else has much of a shot.
 
Yeah that LSU fan needs to get a grip. Les's offense sucks but to me it looks more like a talent issue at QB and the OL than what play call Less is calling. They struggled up front in the title game and it seems like its continued through this year.

So let's see. Right now and very recently (within last couple months) in the SEC, we've had Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Tennessee and Kentucky all wanting their coaches fired.

Kentucky, Arkansas, and Auburn have a legitimate gripe there.
