Tech Hires Gillespie

Great coach, but short-term hire.

If he's sober, he'll win and then either fall off the wagon or take a bigger job.

If he's still drinking, this will be a disaster and they'll fire him within 2-3 years.

Isn't Lubbock in a dry county? I thought I heard that somewhere. I didn't know Gillespie had a drinking problem, but this may be the best thing for him if that's the case.

I don't think it will work out, but Tech might as well take the risk. Doubt the guy can stay soberover the long haul though.

It's not... the last time CU played Tech in Lubbock, half of the stadium was ****faced

Wheatley was outstanding that day.

it used to be dry. i think it changed recently. had some guys on my boat last week talking about that.

Like Obilijah said "was dry" Changed about a year and a half ago with a 70% vote to make it wet.

Coach Gillispie is facing a tough challenge here. A 10-member conference will likely get less tourney consideration, so a middling conference team that gets most of its regular season wins on the nonconference schedule won't stand much of a chance when the committee's already picked the 4 or 5 teams ahead of it. Kansas should return as the favorite next year and Texas will be returning Thompson and Hamilton. A&M and Kansas State should make up the 2nd tier, with Mizzou either in or out of that group depending on whether Anderson leaves (Arkansas). Who knows if those incidents with Baylor this year blossom into something larger that could bring down the program again, as rumors about Drew being a crooked recruiter have persisted throughout his tenure there. That leaves the possibility of Gillispie fighting with the Pokes, the Nubs and Iowa State to stay out of the cellar next year.

I do think his coaching abilities rank in the top half of the Big 12, and he has experience recruiting to two Texas schools, one in West Texas before. So in the long term I think he may last longer than Pat Knight at Tech, though it may be a string of NIT appearances that becomes standard for the program under him with one or no seasons going to the dance. And this is of course assuming an NIT appearance or two doesn't get him interest from a higher profile basketball school with a vacancy, in which case he bolts.

Recruiting to Lubbock has to be a daunting task. But it certainly can be done.

My one year there, we had to go outside the city to by liquor.

TX could be a dry state, if a drunk wants to drink, he'll find a way.
