Terrance Lang Redshirting...there is depth on the D Line

Daily Camera is saying that Lang is headed for a Redshirt. Just another piece of evidence that there is depth on the Dline with this squad. Unless you are the truly unique O or D lineman, a RS year is the best way to adjust to P5 football and to develop depth in your lines.

Frank Umu is a lean 300lb+ RS Sophomore who is someone were ready to count on, and he's ready to step up.

And did you see Montez's comment on Edwards? "Javier Edwards is a very, very, very large human being making things happen."

That's what you like to hear about your NT.

Boys, the D line is going to surprise people and be part of the reason our D surpasses the expectations of most.

GO BUFFS!

I don't really think they expected a player who arrived late and had academic concerns to contribute this year. That doesn't mean they weren't surprised by the weight loss.

I don't think it's anything to worry about. If it was a health thing, then he wouldn't be full-go in practice and the scrimmage. I think it could be as simple as someone else mentioned, he played basketball and got here late.

Lang redshirting has more to do with his weight loss than our depth, is what I got from the article.

I disagree. Even with his weight loss, Lang is still 6'5" and 245-250lbs. There are plenty of CFB teams playing a 250lb DE. The reason he can sit and add more weight IS BECAUSE OF DEPTH. The fact is we have the luxury of sitting a guy who, 4 years ago, would not be redshirting as a freshman.

Eddie Lopez played 125 snaps as a true freshman four years ago because we didn't have depth. You're telling me that if signed Lang four years ago he would be taking a RS year? He wouldn't.

How is the team able to RS him this year? Because of depth.

We run a 3-4 though, so he would be playing OLB at this system. He is not lining up in front of a Pac-12 tackle at 250 pounds I can tell you that.

Mic drop.
I am curious as to how many P5 teams are playing a 240 pound DE in a 3-4. My guess is... very few, if any. Also, saying that if we had signed Lang 4 years ago he would be playing isn't exactly an argument with teeth. IIRC, we were in a 4-3, for one. Even assuming that, those were the worst defenses in CU and even P5 history. We are unproven on the DL, and Lang showing up unable to physically play the position we signed him for is forcing a personnel move, not allowing us a luxury.

I guess I just assumed he was going to redshirt anyway. That will definitely help him academically. Give him time, add some pounds, he'll be good to go

4 years ago, we sucked so bad, that perhaps he would have played.

In our 3-4 defense, a 245-250lbs DE is not what real CFB teams are marching out there. In a 4-3, yes. See Jimmy Gilbert in our old system.

My read on this is that the staff was ok with his 282 lb body composition and a bit surprised to see him come in at 245. At 282, they thought he might compete for PT as a true freshman, given his natural abilities and our lack of depth at DE. The operative word being "might". Much different than 4 years ago when the word would have been "needed". We have the luxury of RS almost all our frosh, which clearly HCMM likes to do. I'm a bit concerned that he dropped that much weight when clearly the staff didn't have him on a weight loss regimen. But that is a very minor concern at most.

You can pick up the mic now, hope it's not damaged.

No matter how highly rated Lang was coming out of highschool, he is still an 18yr old. He should be redshirting. The DL and OL are usually not places you stick true freshman. They are physically just not ready, that isn't a knock on them, it is just physiology.

Samson was listed at about 260 last year. That's probably the absolute lowest you could go at a DE position in a 3-4. Carrell played at right around 300.

This isn't a binary choice. He's redshirting because A) he's physically not where we want him to be and B) because we have players that can play the position and there's no need to rush him on to the playing field as a true freshman.

That had to be wrong, they said in the videos last year that him, Tupou and Carrell were all over 300 at the start.

In a 3-4, I'd think it's more typical that an end would be in the 270, 280 range or bigger. Redshirting is probably a good choice. Let him grow into his body a little more.
