Terrel Smith got called out publicly - thoughts?

Embree said in his interview yesterday that he just wasn't seeing it with Terrel Smith despite what people have told him to expect with the player.

What do you guys think of that?

Some people on other boards are questioning whether Smith is any good based on that. No one has questioned whether Embree should keep that stuff out of the papers (kind of surprised me).

My take is that Embree must think that Smith has the potential to be a heck of a player or he wouldn't bother talking about him. I think that Embo knows that Smith is a competitor who plays better when he has a chip on his shoulder, so he's calling him out in order to get the most out of him.

I've heard from several sources that Smith came into camp last year as an absolute maniac who was laying the wood on everyone. The coaches and certain veteran "leaders" discouraged this and took his fire away after a big hit he made on Espinoza, making him hesitant. Then, it was hard for him to recapture that when they pulled the redshirt and started him.

I firmly believe that Embree is trying to get the old "Terror" back.

I don't mind it. What JE said wasn't bad at all. It will definitely be interesting to see who starts at Safety this year. You have to think that Perkins is a lock being as experienced as he is. And hopefully Polk comes along mentally

I think people have been overrating Terrel Smith all along. He is a decent player that racked up a bunch of tackles as teams moved the ball on us at will.

The Daily Camera had a good article about Smith today too, and I think that both of them know that he is a talented individual and that they need to see more from him. Smith also wants to perform up to his ability, so I think that once he "gets the defensive schemes" he will be a stud just like he was for a majority of his playing time last year.

He was a pleasant surprise in my opinion (even though he got smoked a few times). I attribute that to being a true freshman rather than a bad player. I'm glad that he got a bunch of PT last year to supplement Polk/Perkins when they graduate or if they go down. I can't see Perkins sitting on the bench, and I hope that Ray puts in a solid spring and fall in order to secure his place on the field. If Terrel beats him out, more power to him!

Glad to also hear that Chapelle is back with the program as a student assistant coach! He was a great buff that should give the younger DB's a great boost in the mental part of the game as well as providing a motivating voice back there!

unfortunately very correct. No way should a true freshman DB be leading the team in tackles.. That just means that the LB's and DL weren't doing their jobs well and he had to cover up a bunch of their mistakes. That being said, he didn't miss too many tackles (i know of a few times though) and was able to at least help keep the Buffs in most of the games in the 2nd half of the season.

My first post in this thread was a little harsh. I do think he has potential to be a starting safety at the college level, but I think a lot of Buffs fans are putting a little too much stock into his play last year. He was decent, but he has a long way to go.

But then, I think our safeties as an entire unit have a lot to prove this year.

I dont think you were too harsh, I question his size, how can we hope to have him cover a jumbo slot WR or TE? hell Scotty McNight towers over him.

Me2. Terrell added a tremendous spark when he got on the field last season.

The ground shifted this year when it comes to how the CUHC is reflected in the paper. It's refreshing to have a coach who is candid. I see a pattern. Embree called out Forrest West after the first practice, although not to the same degree. Forrest has responded by stepping up his game and getting praise.

The issue here is how Terrell will respond. I hope he earns some praise, too.

I don't think Ambrose was a very good Safety coach. Polk definitely took a step back. I believe we'll see a lot of improvement under Greg Brown. Chap's a nice addition as a grad assistant, too.

It's hard to overrate a freshman/sophomore unless they have 4 or 5 stars. I think this was a function to how inconsistant the DL was last year. I think if anything else, it proved that he could at least tackle someone in the open field. With that being said, I sure hope he steps up. I did like the #'s he put up.

Could be, we'll see. I think it is fair to question some of the talent evaluation by Brown as far as safeties as well though. DJ Dykes and Patrick Mahnke are two glaring examples of guys who should not have been starters or seeing significant playing time at the BCS level.

Not sure he was "the man". He played in one half of one game iirc. I like Parker, but it will be interesting to see if his small frame holds up.

I think there is a kind of fine line when you publicly criticize players. JE is in the mode of establishing his personality and trying to change the team's personality as well. I think how he handles the public criticism in private is probably the important thing. I hope this is an attempt at motivating and nothing else. But he hasn't done the same to other players. I doubt if Smith is the only guy on the team that needs motivation. So, if he's singling Smith out, what is the reason? To motivate him? To run him off? To use him as an example? Time will tell.

Yeah, it's one thing to call out a player in spring ball. If the season rolls around and JE is saying stuff that sounds like he's blaming the players for losses, that will grow old very quickly.

Calling a player out in the media is never a good idea. Especially during spring ball. There are better ways to get more out of your players.

The old coach...whats his name....should have been a little tougher on players not named Tyler Hansen because they played better than his son....sorry rant.
