The Good, the Bad and the Ugly...plus more Reality - Arizona State!!!

The Good

It looked like Sefo knows how to stand in the pocket and maybe can develop into a real BCS level QB. The other good thing is the game was late so many maybe did not even see it, it was too late to make the print edition of the paper.

The Bad

It was pretty much all bad. The offense could not move, the defense could not stop anyone and special teams were not special. This could of been a lot worse if ASU had not pulled the plug at halftime.

The Ugly

The overall effort was so poor the ASU coach announced to the few viewers that he was invoking the mercy rule for the second half. In the second half everyone just wanted this thing over.

The further reality

After the Oregon State game the excuse was that we were rusty and had to play in a driving rain. After Oregon it was that anyone would get beat by Oregon and we had led once in the game. After ASU I think the truth is out. Our team has trouble staying on the field with even moderately good teams.

The simple fact that we have threads like this and the amount of response today to the other threads means that there are fans more interested and hopefull than we were last year.

Last season by this time about the only thing we were looking at is "Why haven't they fired Embree?" and "When will they fire Embree?" along with "Can it get any worse or more embarrassing?"

As to Sefo he has a different style that may help him survive our line. He made more quick passes with a short drop and release that we have had all year so far with Wood. With our line you can't set up deep and hold the ball waiting for guys to come open. You won't have time and they aren't getting open on those routes.

There should be little surprise at last night's game. But ASU and Oregon State are upper middle class PAC teams and Oregon proved at Washington that they're gonna do to everyone what they did to us. I don't think they are the proper bars to measure progress against. We're not good and we're gonna get beaten up by decent teams. It remains to be seen whether we can even give Cal a decent game, let alone Arizona and Utah. But we did beat a couple of lesser teams we could well have lost to without a coaching change.

We definitely are better than last year. I think an Embree coached team loses to CSU and Central Arky. The coaches deserve some criticism for what happened against Oregon State----we don't have the talent to play Stanford-esque football with anyone. As far as ASU, I saw mental mistakes (especially defensively), and a glaring mismatch in speed and talent. We don't have a corner who can matchup with somebody like Jaelen Strong. Oregon was a big step forward IMO. We hung with them for a quarter, which is more than one can say for Tennessee, Virginia, or Cal. To be the only team not named Stanford in the last couple years to take two different leads against the the Ducks was a big step.

This is not going to be easy, but I think progress is there. Let's go get a win this Saturday, and then steal a conference game or two. I bet there isn't a poster here who wouldn't be happy with 4-5 wins.

Honestly think that we give Cal a game. They put up big #'s on offense, but their defense couldn't stop a light breeze.

Good - moving on at QB and no injuries

Bad - lost again, team psyche is in doubt now

Ugly - the way CU lost, the recruiting hit we take, our OL and DL play.

Good post. In other games at least one phase of the game played well...this one we sucked on all 3 fronts. Mac has a lot of work to do.

Our only hope...our O line becomes competent, Sefo is good and the DBs play well. Still think 3-5 wins is somewhat possible and is an improvement from JE.

Truth. Well said.

Weren't people saying the same thing about the ASU game?

ASU is just plain unpredicatable. Their very talented D came to play, led by a fired up D lineman Will Sutton who is a dominant NFL 1st round draft pick.

I would take Utah out of that group. However, I agree; I think that Arizona and Cal tell us a lot more about this year's team than any game up to this point. Right now we should not be expected to beat good Pac 12 teams. We should be expected to play the lower tier close and hopefully win.

I thought they turned off. I had not seen that previously this year, and it is a bad development.

Go Buffs!

Neither Arizona State nor Oregon State are ranked and we are not even competitive with them. Did you even watch Oregon versus Washington? Washington was within a touchdown of Oregon after 3 quarters...not even comparable to CU versus Oregon.

Both ASU and OSU have been ranked this year. OSU has won five straight since losing the opener. They also went to Utah who beat Stanford and won there and they have a Heisman contender in Mannion who leads the nation in TDs and passing yards. OSU has recovered very well after finishing last year ranked.

ASU is a bipolar team, but a very talented team who blew the doors off of a good USC defense.

Washington is a borderline top 10 team and Oregon still ****ed them up on the road.

all 3 of those teams have smoked us and Washington is licking their canines.

Take Utah out of what group? Where do you put Utah? I have them as a middling PAC team, despite their win over Stanford. Arizona is a little lower, with Cal our closest chance to compete.

I don't see anything you said that conflicts with what I said: ASU and Oregon St are upper middle class PAC teams. They are so much better than us that they are not a good measuring stick.

Oregon beat Washington like a drum: 45-24 and 631 yds to 376, similar to their other games this year.
