The good, the bad and the ugly

The Good:

Obviously P-Rich on offense and Gillam on defense. I really liked the intensity and aggression in the first quarter, however....

The Bad:

We have to get touchdowns instead of field goals. We were in the red zone 4 times (the 16 yard line, the 5 yard line, the 14 yard line, and the 6 yard line) and only managed 9 points. Think about had we started the game 7-0 instead of 3-0. We left at least 16 points on the field, 57-32 is a totally different ball game in the 2nd half with as much confidence as those TD's would have given us.

The Ugly:

Has to be 3rd-down conversion rate. 0-15...a week after going 2-15. This HAS to change if we want to compete in the future. Even converting 5 of those (that's still a small amount) and we get more offensive production.

More ugly: Just when I thought Wood was learning to throw the ball away, he throws a pic at a very crucial time.

More good: Very few penalties by the Buffs. I think by halftime, they were only penalized 15 yards to Oregon's 5.

More Bad: Erratic execution of offensive plays. To JJB's point, when the Buffs got in the redzone, it sometimes seemed like Oregon new what play was going to be called

Good:

-I thought Severson played well returning kicks last night. He didn't come out when he shouldn't have and he got to around the 30 everytime and almost broke one
-The defense never gave up on the game and played hard the whole game
-CUD and Gillam
-We played toe-to-toe with them for the first quarter
-1st quarter play calling

Bad:
-Connor Wood (those two picks were inexcusable and it's not like we were going to win in the end but they were the difference in the game at that point in time)
-Red zone offense
-3rd down offense

One other thing I noticed, Wood seems to rush himself out of the pocket. On multiple plays (particularly one in the red zone in the first quarter, I believe it was 3rd down on our first drive) he rolled out of the pocket and threw across his body and it was nearly picked off at the goal line. Oregon did get some pressure on occasion, but he had very happy feet and instead of stepping up to avoid the outside rush, he decided to run around backwards. Same thing happened on the first INT he threw. Ran backwards and threw off his back foot (on 3rd down nonetheless).

Yeah, that first pick he threw was just awful. We would have had to give Oregon the ball anyway, throw it away and punt it and make them start from inside their 20.

The redzone problems arise, IMO, because there is no way the OL can create a seam when the field is short. The coaches do a great job making teams respect the deep ball on the far side of our 20, when you get down inside the 20, teams tighten up and you have to get push to run the ball. The OL simply cannot get a push against anybody when the other team is able to hunker down and play the run tight when there is no deep ball threat. It is reminiscent of the Hawk era, when CU could not get the ball downfield, or over the top in the air. Now that the era of the midget CU QB is over, at least CU can make teams back off until they get to the redzone. Until the OL is able to matchup against a DL and get the push necessary to run the ball, even when the D is expecting it, CU isn't going to be very competitive.

So the QB shouldn't check the coverage that he is throwing into? Wood should have audibled out of the screen.

I think Mtn is suggesting that the play call was fine, but that it was DD's execution on that particular play that led to the DB having a free line to the pick. You can disagree with that, and I definitely disagree with the notion that DD has been a disappointment this year, but it is an interesting perspective regarding the interception.

No I understand that, but blindly throwing the ball to a WR shouldn't be something that is fine and dandy. DD completely missed that block, but if nothing is there (there was already press man being played so there wasn't much room anyway), sail it over the WR's head and lose the down but avoid the turnover.

3 games in he has 6 receptions, 53 yards, 1 TD He also has 2 carries for 40 yards. Still hasn't broken 100 yards total offense on the season. He also has a couple of drops on what should have been easy receptions.

He is young and changed positions but I had hoped for some more big play threat from him to take some of the pressure off PRich and loosen things up for other players

I referred to the big play in my earlier post and am not saying that DD has been bad but he has not had a significant impact like we were led to believe coming out of camp. Maybe he will turn it on and start to have a bigger impact. So far he is well down the list in terms of impact so far this year.

Well down the list? He's 4th in total yards (1 behind Powell) and second in TDs (behind only P-Rich)....

BAD -losing

Good - only 2 penalties - allsomeness field goal unit Oliver not getting credit that is due. Injury free by the most part, SCC Foreman deserves credit. Running game coming around, credit competition. Punt, KO coverage getting better. Play calling, gotta love the non-conservative approach and creativity. Gillam, Awuzuie, Henderson, CUD, Adkins, PRich, = studs for us.
