Brilliance or derp?

Brilliance: Nienas is a turrible ST coach and we have no faith they wouldn't take it to the house or have their O throw a 70 yard bomb.

Derp: We take a sack outside of the endzone with even 0.5s left and they have a chipshot to go to OT or a chance to get a TD and straight up win.
 
Damn, meant to go with "Derp!"

Awful. Take the safety if you are going to do that.
 
it was smart football, no one else is touching the ball, time is more important than yardage at that point. the math has to be precise.
 
Two things... first, I have no clue what derp means. Second, Mac is better at clock math than Dan Hawkins.

Anticlimactic ending, but the results were right.
 
A mix of both. You could see Mac yelling at Sefo to just run straight towards the endzone. You could tell Sefo was a bit hesitant about the whole idea which made it look awkward. If Sefo had his eye on the clock than it was smart on his part, but it looked like it happened by accident.
 
If you can't win with physicality, win with clever time management. It worked. UMass didn't get the ball back.
 
Is this what the other coach was complaining about at the end of the game ? He had some words with mm at the end of the game and I wasn't sure what he was griping for

UMass coach Mr. Whipple had his Charmin squeezed by MacIntyre's clock engineering.

Given the chance, I have no doubt the Minutemen will return the favor in Boulder.
 
It was perfect. Remember against Georgia when Hawk punted from our 1 yard line instead of taking a safety, and we lost? I don't understand the complaints here.

Since I was listening in the radio, I have not much of a cle what you guys are talking about. Mark and Larry don't paint much of a picture. :sad2:

I was was wondering why Sefo was kneeling so quickly on the previous snaps and not trying to burn an extra couple of seconds. Major & LZ were saying they'd get the ball back with about 5 seconds left. What happened on the last play? What down was it?

I thought it was a hair too close and too big of a risk.

Bottom line business, though. It worked exactly as intended. Buffs won. As uncomfortable as it might have made me, I can't fault it.

Most frustrating thing to me about it was that our coaches didn't have confidence to run the ball on 2nd down to try to earn a 1st down to close it out. It's like they knew that our team couldn't make that happen.
 
The moment Sefo was sacked on the 4th down play, the clock struck zero. If you have a homer running the clock and he starts it a second later than he should, then UMass gets it at the 5 with 1 second left. You cannot tell me that in the heat of the moment the coaches had that figured out that precisely. We got VERY lucky. Sefo should have run out the back of the end zone and time would have expired before he even made it to the end line.

I agree with this. There was no reason for the Buffs not to try to run for a first down on that series. Then take a knee to run it out once you have it easily. Doing it the way we did it seemed desperate to me. But I'll take the win.... had no faith in the punt recovery team to keep UMass out of FG range.

Thanks. Yeah, I was thinking that on 4th down he should run to the end zone. Worst case, we are up by one and kicking to them with a second left. Oh, wait. We'd be kicking it to them...

Like I mentioned above, I think that was the intent by Mac. Sefo was a bit skittish on it and we got lucky he was able delay enough to end the game.

Oh in that case I would have been fine with it. Maybe the potential for derp was on Sefo. Either way MM should have relayed to go out of the end zone.
 
In the event that there is a safety with no time on the clock, does the ball still have to be kicked off?
 
Mixture of luck and good clock management. I cannot tell you how pathetic it looked for Sefo to be playing a game of tag to run out the clock though. A P12 team having to finesse it's way to running out the clock against the worst D1 team in America...totally embarassing.
 
Along the same lines - This win:

Good: based on the absolutely atrocious road record of the Buffs since '0x. We have a serious black cloud over the team, so any road win is a good one, especially one that is more than one state away.

Bad: UMASS is just a horrible horrible football team

When I was coaching I had the same play built in for our QB and punter. both with the option of taking a safety or not. It is fundamentally sound, even if it isn't pretty.

i have seen SEC teams do it as well. didn't look great, but is not limited to us.
 
I like the concept in general, but the fact that it was close enough in execution to leaving time on the clock that the play had to be reviewed bumped it into the "derp" category for me...

except we did it on 4th down up 3 in their redzone. the potential for epic fail was there.

that said, it worked out and we won.
 
I understood what they were doing,I just didn't trust our juju.Didn't seem like Sefo completely understood what he was being told to do,not sure they practiced that before.
