The new "Targeting" Rule

I just heard about this today. If a player is deemed to have "targeted" another player he is suspended. If it happens in the first half, suspended for rest of game. Second half, rest of game and first half of next game. Man, I do not like these rules that carry such huge consequences and are subjective. Oh, and they can review these.

One problem I see right ff the top of my head is when an inter conference game has a mixed crew or opposing conference crew. This rule is bound to impact some games.
 
Not sure I follow - targeted as in intended to injure, or targeted as in blitzed specifically to sack the quarterback. Obviously the second is ridiculous, but where is the line. Got a link to the wording DBT?

Remember Orms' hit on a guy that was penalized? That is "targeting." My impression is that it would mostly be hits on a "defenseless" receiver.

I don't see anything wrong with Clowney's hit. If the OL had blocked him, it wouldn't have happened. What was he supposed to do? Politely suggest that the RB take a seat?

The head of the ACC refs said it would be targeting. The head of other conferences have gone on record saying the Clowney hit would not have been targeting.

Only applies to student athletes who are engineering majors, they should know better than to unlawfully apply force with a hard blunt object like their thick skulls!
 
The hit by Clowney was perfect. If they start throwing flags on that and kicking players out of the game college football will become a joke.
 
I just think its gonna make guys play slower because they are scared to get a penalty, that's when u get hurt in football. The control they are trying to have over play is gonna do more hurt than good IMHO, it all boils down to lawsuits, money. Did they kick out that guy from UNC last night? I'm not sure because I was flipping channels, that **** was way dirty. They are asking too much from defensive players these days, these are grown men and they know damn well what they signed up for. Wanna fix something, fix the roid problem. Make the benefits and retirement better, pretty damn sure they can afford it.

Saw it called last night and I had to agree with it. Guy waiting for a punt. The defender hit him full speed before the ball arrived. He cleaned the guy's clock. It happened in the second half, do the player is suspended for the first half of the next game. So, I'm fine with that. But the ones that will be tough will be the bang-bang plays on receivers catching the ball and getting hit by a defender. Say the receiver catches the ball, the defender goes for a form tackle. You know, right on the numbers. But the receiver "ducks" at the last second and the defender hits him high. Bam. Suspended.

That's what I mean, he ducks his head. Then what are u supposed to do? Let him run by u and score? God forbid somebody actually gets lit up, it is a contact sport. Don't play if u don't wanna get hit. It's not hard to see the difference between a football hit and a dirty one.

The Clowney hit looks like a basic football tackle where the ball carrier running straight at defender, defender pulls head back (so as not to spear) and hits ballcarrier mostly in upper chest. Even the Orms hit....He used his own shoulder and hit the receiver below the neck, right? I thought the rules say you can't hit with head, and you cant hit at the other guys head.
 
That was a great hit, he led with his shoulder too, joke. Why don't we just play flag football? Hell, we had 3 weeks of two a days, how many does the nfl have now? I kept hearing last night, some guys just don't look conditioned. I ****ing wonder why.
 
Whoever is circulating the idea that that Clowney hit would result in a flag per this new rule is using hyperbole to drum up a **** storm.
