The Question I Have

Who does The Mayor guard against ASU? Do we let him go against Carson (5'10") to shut him down and take a chance with Chen/XJ/Roberson on Felix (6'6") and leave Ski on Gordon (6'1") or do we put Ski on Carson and let the Mayor shut down Felix? ASU is bad, but they do pose a few matchup problems for us on defense, so it'll be interesting to see. I'm betting we go with The Mayor on Carson (stop him and the team will shut down), put Chen on Felix and hope Ski doesn't get abused by Gordon.

Thoughts?

God I love to see this kind of stuff on the basketball board... 6-7 years ago there was hardly a peep, let alone analysis.

Back to the question... I say let xj guard Felix now that he is in the starting line up and Mayor on Carson.

Does XJ stay in the starting lineup? I was against it prior to last night (Yung and I had a discussion about it), and Tad said it was match up only, but I think he stays now. Will be interesting to see.

Thought XJ starting in place of Ski was a good idea to provide some bench scoring. Chen certainly made a good case last night. Either way I'm in the XJ should be starting camp. My guess is Boyle will rotate this lineup on a need basis.

I think the XJ start and Chen off of the bench proved to be such a solid move that we will see it again at ASU. Have XJ on Felix, Mayor shut down Carson and see how Ski does with Gordon. Adjust from there.

Concern is can Carson get Dinwiddie in four trouble. As it showed last night, when Spencer is out, we struggle in the half court. I would put Spencer on Carson and let Ski guard Gordon. Chen problably matches up better with Felix.

Interesting in that both XJ and Chen had career nights last night. Maybe nothing to it but both sure appeared to relish the roles they played last night.

I'm not too worried about Dinwiddie getting in foul trouble. Since we're only playing ASU (and not UCLA or Oregon) I'm guessing the refs are going to go out of their way to avoid homering the Buffs after the media onslaught of how we got jobbed.

XJ stepped up, but he was only in there at the start because of the size problems Arizona brought to the table. Against ASU, who doesn't have a Solomon Hill playing SF, he's back to the bench.

It's a strange matchup.

If we go with the same starting lineup, I'd match them up as follows:

Mayor - Carson
Ski - Gordon
Dre - Felix
XJ - Gilling
Jelly - Bachynski

Half of ASU's shots are going to come from Carson and Felix. I believe in putting your 2 best on their 2 best. Issue the challenge. Basketball is simple sometimes. If your 2 best players beat their 2 best players, you'll almost always win.

I have a question: When are we going to start making free throws? Seriously.

I don't know. ASU's got a 7'2" center and 2 forwards who go 6'6" or 6'7". Who is Chen going to match up with? I guess you could maybe put him on Felix so that Dre was freed up a bit to freelance off of Grilling, but I think that's a dangerous cover for Chen.

Gilling is a soft 6-7, and doesn't have nearly the post repertoire that Hill has. He has a grand total of 18 two-point attempts all year. Chen should be able to guard him.

Felix is a great matchup for 'Dre. Undersized, and can step-out. 'Dre's got this.

6-7 years ago, Ricardo rolled the ball out on the court and said, "Let 'em play!" That was the extent of his coaching "expertise".

Now that the Buffs have a real coach in Tad, as well as a great recruiter, its so much more fun. 10,000 sold for Hartford, UFB!

Shoot, I now read CVille's RPI updates religiously, you have to to keep up!

Dinwiddie needs to guard Carson b/c of his length. Carson looks to take it to the hoop on every possession, Dinwiddie can disrupt passing lanes and Carson's shots with his length. None of the other match-ups really matter because everything runs through Carson, if you shut him down or limit him you win.

I'm recovering from my devastation today and I will be back in action this weekend
