The Turning Point

This isn't a thread to continue the bitching about the Arizona game, but rather look to Saturday's game against (hopefully) the worst team in the Pac 12. I believe this game represents a turning point, not only for this season, but potentially for Mike MacIntyre's tenure at CU.

From a 2017 season perspective, a win would still put them on track for 6 wins and a bowl game appearance, which would achieve one of the goals set forth by RG, while a loss almost completely eliminates those hopes, and could lead to this team quitting the rest of the way and a rough ending to the 2018 recruiting class.

From a bigger picture perspective, a win and going to a bowl game keeps the program "above water" and meets the expectation most people had coming into the year, and going forward. However, could a loss have a snowball effect on the rest of the season that leads RG deciding 2016 was an aberration and that major changes need to be made, including parting ways with Mac at the end of the year? Has the CU administration made enough of a commitment to athletic excellence to where they would allow RG to make a change a year after giving MM an extension?

I think we'd all agree that this week's game is a must win, but is it the turning point for the season and Mac's time at CU?

MacIntyre is not going anywhere. He will be here for the next two seasons at least.

I won't read much into a win against Oregon State. A loss would be really bad though.

The goal is pretty easy from here on out. Get to a bowl, putting emphasis on individual games is probably not really important. If we get to six, who really cares how we get there?

And there is zero chance MacIntyre is fired after this season.

I would say a 35 point win would help the psyche of the team and call off the hounds bitching non-stop around here. That would help all the way around, IMO.

This is a nice theory, but you have to believe that if this team is going to get to 6 wins, Oregon State has to be one of them, right? I see Wazzu and USC being absolutely no-hopers, which means they would have to beat Utah on the road. So while a loss this week doesn't mathematically eliminate them, do you really see a bowl game happening?

And I would generally agree about Mac's job not being in jeopardy, but if they can't beat Oregon State, what makes us think they can beat any of the teams remaining on the schedule? You don't think a 4-8 season in year 5 of Mac's tenure could heat up his seat pretty quickly?

Yup. Only remaining goal to achieve that is meaningful is keeping the bottom from dropping out and getting to six wins. Everything else is nothing but cherries.*

*Would be nice to do that with a win over USC tho.

This is where I am at. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, more of a realist. I just do not see 3 more wins on the schedule no matter how hard I try. I think a dominating performance this weekend will help with the team psyche and get us closer to that goal, but we go to wsu the following weekend? If we lose this weekend, I could see the team falling apart and fingers being pointed within the team. I sure hope the Buffs come out this Saturday with a Chip on their shoulder and lazer focused. Like I mentioned earlier, you have to watch home teams that are backed into a corner with their own goals in front of them.
I do not see HCMM going anywhere at the end of this season... I could see RG forcing staff changes to get closer to the lofty goals he has set - which then will cause friction with him and MM at that point.

I said Oregon State would be a bad loss. I guess I just do not view it as a "turning point" either way though.

Even at 4-8, his seat would be cool. There will undoubtedly be coaching changes though.

Meh. The relief is only temporary if they go to Pullman and get blown out.

Changes at 4-8 or changes regardless what the record?

I think it's a must win, if 6 is the goal considering remaining opponents.

Changes will happen regardless, but 4-8 would force more drastic changes.

I am not convinced anyone in the South is better than 9-3. Obviously the chances go down considerably with a loss on Saturday, but the schedule is not exactly crazy tough either. Not trying to sugar coat anything, but an offense with signs of life can be enough to get six wins in strange combos.

This.

Six is still in jeopardy. From what I have seen so far, OSU and Cal offer reasonable prospects for a win. CU would have to steal one from ASU, WSU, USC or Utah. ASU is the only one I think is likely. 6-6 coming off a P12 CCG appearance is disappointing. Miss a bowl? Unacceptable.

I think MikMac is safe no matter the outcome. OTOH, the chances of him getting poached are now near zero, so look at the bright side.

I agree with this. Oregon State is totally in the dumpster. They lost to CSU with Luton at QB. The backup is not very good and Luton is out. To beat up on OSU is expected - so a big win over them is not a turning point. Losing to them will hurt this season but I have a hard time seeing that happening.

Knowing hard hard it seemed to actually get the extension and pay raises for MM and his staff done, I'm thinking a huge buyout is not something they would do. Although I wouldn't have extended him, but I get why he hey did. Whether we are a 1 hit wonder and return to bottom or remain bowl type team, either way I think we sick or swim with MM.

I'm in, sick or swim.

No way should Mac get fired after this season, I think he's safe no matter what happens, even going 0fer. You just don't fire a guy that took us to the P12 championship one year later, even if this season does go off the rails.

Why is it so hard to Mac coached teams to play a complete game? Really annoying when no matter how good two of the units are the third just completely ****s the bed. The only game I can think of was CSU last year, even the ASU game had some special teams turnovers.

ASU is still hot garbage. Not sure why people are particularly worried about that game, other than the fact it's in the road.

what worries me about asu? They have talent all over the roster, they have a coach much like rich rod...finds and exploits weakness and being a road game.
