There are some horrible teams in the PAC-12 this year, and Buff fans are going to get to see one of them this week. USC is just plain bad. These guys are one of the absolulte worst shooting teams in the nation. They are 321st in eFG%, they're 322nd in 3-point %, 286th in 2-point % and 330th in FT %. Plain and simple, they can't shoot. Which probably explains why their adjusted efficiency on offense is 292nd. And along with being absolutely horrid on offense, they are one of the slowest teams in the nation, coming in 335th in pace. So all in all, you can see why the Trojans are such a treat to watch. The one thing they do haev going for them is that they're phenomenal on defense. They're 44th in the nation in defensive efficiency and are SEVENTH in forced turnover percentage, so the Buffs are going to have to be careful with the ball. CU is right exactly on the national average for turnovers, so they're going to have to raise their game a bit against USC.
That said, USC lost -- at home -- to Arizona State 62-53. If CU doesn't get their first PAC-12 road win on Thursday night, we all need to be concerned and we will officially have pissed away all of the goodwill that the Arizona win has gotten us.
As for UCLA, I honestly have no idea what to expect. I've only seen them play a few games this season and I can't figure that team out at all. Statistically, they're a great offensive team -- 38th in the nation at offensive efficiency, so the new and improved Buffs defense will be tested on Saturday afternoon. If the game were in the Keg, I'd be convinced the Buffs were going 2-0 this week, but being on the road -- even the quasi-road environment that UCLA has this year -- scares me. If the Buffs are going to get the 20 wins that some of you are hoping for, getting these two games will be a huge step in that direction.
After a disappointing loss to ASU, the women's team rebounded with a great win over Arizona yesterday. USC comes to town on Thursday night and it's going to be a tough battle. The Trojans are 21st in RPI with a 10-7 record. While that doesn't sound great, those seven losses are mostly against great teams. Notre Dame, Georgia, Texas A&M and Stanford are some of the premier teams that USC has taken on this year. The only thing that really causes your eyebrows to raise is their loss at Arkansas State in what I'm assuming was a bit of a fluke game. UCLA isn't as impressive as USC this year, coming in ranked at 68th in RPI right now, but they're still a quality team. All of that said, RealTimeRPI.com has the Buffs projected to go 2-0 this week. If Lappe's crew can do that, it would go a long way towards making a case for the tourney.
