Well, that sucked.
The first game was the one that I was most nervous about, as the Buffs drew one of the top two teams in the tournament in Wichita State. The Shockers are a team that should be playing late in March, and proved why against the Buffs. Between Smith's outside shooting and Stutz's pounding us down low, the Shockers just out-executed us. That said, I was thrilled with the Buffs effort in the game. You could argue that a walk-on was their second best player in that game (Chen was HUGE off of the bench for the Buffs), and they still kept it close throughout. It had to be an encouraging sign for Buff fans.
Then we had the Maryland game. There's no other way to look at it than to say that this game is going to be a "bad loss" at the end of the season. Maryland is down this year, and only had 7 scholarship athletes for the game. CU jumped out to the early lead and led by double digits in the second half before completely falling apart. To say that CU lacked effort on the glass would be an understatement and you could hear the frustration in Boyle's voice after the game when they asked him about free throw shooting. Honestly, this game bothers me more than the San Francisco and Harvard games did last year. There is zero excuse for us to have lost it.
Luckily, we managed to salvage a 7th place finish and at least get one win thanks to Western Michigan, but no thanks to the refs who just killed Andre Roberson. So I guess we are now four games into the season and still don't know what we have. Are we the team that hung with a GOOD Wichita State team in the first game and kicked the hell out of Maryland for 25 minutes? Or are we the team that collapsed against the Terrapins and struggled to put away a Western Michigan team that isn't exactly dominant?
THIS WEEK
Only one game this week, but it's an important one. Time to see if the Buffs can win in hostile territory as they head into Clune Arena to take on Air Force. Air Force is coming in to the game 3-0, but they haven't exactly played murderers row as they've beaten Army, VMI and Western State. The key for the Buffs will be attacking the boards, which isn't exactly either team's strength. Roberson should have a huge game against Air Force as the Zoomies lack the size to really pound the glass (you don't see a lot of 7 foot fighter pilots after all), and I expect Austin and SHT to get on track as well. The key will be for the Buffs to stay disciplined on D, and if they can do it they could escape with a victory.
