FINAL REGULAR SEASON NUMBERS
And with that, the regular season comes to an end with not a bang, but a whimper. As bad as the last two games were, I can't be depressed. Maybe it's because I read Rumblin's post from today. Mostly though, I think it's because I looked back at what my expectations were prior to the season. I thought we'd be 15-15 heading into the PAC-12 tournament, so it's really hard to be upset with 19-11. If you look the most optimistic projection there was 'Nik saying we'd go 17-13. Face it, this season was a success.
I think the thing that bothers me the most is that we had a chance at a top 4 seed. Mostly though, I wanted the prestige of finishing with a first round bye when we were picked to finish 10th. That said, the more I look at it, the more the bracket is really set up for CU to make a run if we go back to playing like we did in January. Beating any team three times in one season isn't easy, but I like our odds against Utah. Come out strong, knock them down, and get it over with quickly. If we do that, we're looking at Oregon and a chance at revenge. The Ducks are hot, but I like that matchup for the team. If they win, odds are they'll end up with Cal who we have played very well both times this season. Arizona or Washington would await in the championship game.
The bracket laid out great for the Buffs. We avoid UCLA and Stanford until the championship game. Oregon makes me nervous, but if the team can find it's mojo, can anyone rule a Buffs win out? I'm not saying our chances of sweeping the tournament are good (I'd put them at less than 5%), but with the way this season has gone down, and the way the "top" teams other than Oregon are faltering down the stretch, I don't think you can rule it out either.
As for the ladies, they got a favorable draw as well -- mainly by avoiding Stanford until the final. If they play like they did against Oregon State, I could see them winning a few games and solidifying that NIT bid. The question with them, as with the men, is "which team is going to show up?"
