Conference Championship Day is here. Most teams have finished but this should be a fun day of watching football.

Biggest game of the day is what you could call a real playoff game. (5) Mich State vs. (4) Iowa in Indianapolis, winner gets into the playoffs for the NC, loser still gets a pretty nice bowl game.

(10) North Carolina against (1) Clemson and ( 18) Florida against (2) Alabama are both looking for the upset that knocks somebody out of the playoffs UNC probably has a better shot but neither game looks to be particularly evenly matched.

With a couple of upsets from the games above (7) Stanford by beating (20) USC could potentially move up into the top 4 but it looks unlikely. This is usually a good game though between a well coached Stanford team and a very talented $C squad.

A game that should have lots of scoring includes (22) Temple at (19) Houston with the winner likely to represent the G5 schools in a New Years Day Bowl, this year Peach or Fiesta.

The non-confence championship game of the week has (12) ****Baylor hosting Texas. Will they take out their frustrations on the Whore-ens giving them an 8th loss in a historically bad season.

Locally
AFA travels to SDSU to play for the MWC title. SDSU lost their starting QB and best interior D-Lineman to injury but SDSU is still almost a TD favorite. Will this be Troy Calhoun's last game as AFA HC.

CSU-Pueblo host Grand Valley State in the quarterfinals of the D2 playoffs. Coach Wristen has his guys getting closer to defending their title.

Correct. Iowa designated as home team but the game is being played in Indianapolis. Thanks for catching it, I will edit.

Unless he receives an offer he literally cannot refuse, not sure why he or any coach would leave a service academy during a successful run. So many of the challenges coaches have to deal with at other schools are not an issue.

I agree with you. The level of expectations are different, they are expected to compete for the conference or rankings, if they get them so much the better. More important is to win games against other service academies, occasionally beat somebody you shouldn't and regularly beat those you should. As important is how you and your program fit into the culture of the institution and develop leaders.

With all that though eventually most good coaches are going to want to see how they could do at a higher level. They want to play for P5 championships and big bowl games. It is also hard to ignore P5 salaries.

Calhoun is young enough and ambitious enough to aspire to something bigger. If not this year sometime soon the right offer will come in and he will move on.

news under my radar that the Pac moved the CCG from Friday night to the same time slot as the ACC and B1G CGs. Smart?

hokiehead predictions: Florida, Stanford, Clemson, Michigan State

Better than it being later. They will get more eyeballs even if in direct competition.

wow ... you think Fla is gonna take Bama down? Gutsy.

I'm saying Bama, Stanford, Clemson, and Iowa as my upset. I used to think the Hawkeyes were a sham, but I've seen them a lot more the past two weeks, and I've been impressed with their command of fundamentals and relative absence of mistakes.

Iowa is the poster child for a team that isn't great at anything, but is solid at everything and simply plays good football that's tough to beat.

My thoughts in the couple times I've seen them play.

I do think their talent is better across the board than they are given credit for. The don't have any wow!! guys but they do have a lot of players who would be playing for just about anyone.

They are also a team that knows how to win. They as a team do the things needed to come out ahead in games.

A lot of these same things apply to Sparty though so it should end up a good game and Sparty has a few more standout types.

It kinda sucks they couldn´t put the ACC title game in this slot, so Houston v Temple it is.

Will be interesting to see what happens if just one of Clemson/Alabama loses. Who gets in next? Does Stanford leapfrog Ohio State? I actually think they do as long as they win.....though it might come down to "style points".

Yeah ... instead we get the three most interesting CCGs all on at once tonight. I can effectively watch two games at once ... but three is pushing the damn envelope!

If Temple would just stop turning the damn ball over they might be able to actually win this game.

Wow ... Texass is up 10-0 early on ****bailer. How the hell did that happen?

Can't believe I'm about to say this ... GO WHORNS!!!

I think Stanford would deserve the playoff spot over Ohio State, but Ohio State would get the spot anyway.

Almost unreal that TEMPLE is a 10-2 team and the Buffs keep on struggling

Baylor is on their 4th string qb now. That will either be a true freshman walk on qb or a WR that played QB in high school.

One would hope not. I believe the Committee is very reluctant to have two teams from the same conference in the playoff, and since the winner of the B1G CCG is virtually assured of making it, that works against the Suckeyes. Nonetheless, Stanford needs to beat the Condoms and look good doing it IMO, because either Florida or NC would have an argument too.

You may be right about having two teams from one conference. If it comes down to Stanford or North Carolina, it HAS to be Stanford if the committee wants to put any value on non-conference scheduling. I cannot see Florida having much of a case.
