He's a CU alum they just featured in the CU Coloradan publication.

Today, he announced his resignation as the CEO & President of the San Diego Padres.

Coincidence? Maybe. But there's some buzz being heard.

Tom Garfinkel
President & Chief Executive Officer

  • Tom Garfinkel was named to the post of president and chief operating officer of the San Diego Padres in April 2009, and was promoted to chief executive officer in April 2012.
  • Prior to joining the Padres, Garfinkel was executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Arizona Diamondbacks. During his tenure there, he built a long-term strategic plan for the franchise, led the re-branding of the club and updating of Chase Field, and led a team that produced the highest controllable revenues in the franchise's history in 2008.
  • Prior to joining the Diamondbacks, Garfinkel spent five years with Chip Ganassi Racing Teams as executive vice president, overseeing all business operations of the 400-employee company. He negotiated more than $500 million in sponsorship and driver contracts that resulted in a 280 percent increase of annual company revenue during his tenure. While Garfinkel was at Chip Ganassi Racing Teams, the organization won two championships and grew to include three NASCAR Nextel Cup teams, one Busch Series team, two IndyCar teams and one Grand-Am team.
  • Garfinkel's background also includes time at Texaco, Inc., where he managed sponsorship and corporate branding, and at Miller Brewing Company in strategic marketing and sales.
  • Garfinkel earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a Master of Business Administration from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

How is it Nik that you move from boulder and still find the scoop (maybe) in your new hometown (I think). Good catch and interesting candidate.

I am for Rick George if it is between the two. Not that this seems a bad choice, I like the fundraiser part, but I like that Rick George has been an Associate AD. And at CU, no less.

Are people really questioning this potential hire because he doesn't have AD experience? He was the CEO of a professional sports team. Before that he was president and COO. He's got experience with renovating athletic facilities, running large companies, and the business of sports. I could really care less if he has AD experience. There are smart people in this organization that can help. We only need someone who's got a specific set of skills and who's willing to learn the business and take advice from people like Ceal who do have experience in an athletic department.

Would be a great hire. Garfinkel has experience with rebuilding fan interest and upgrading facilities. I like him better than George.

I live in San Diego and there really is only 1 message board/blog for the Padres - gaslampball.com.

They don't take themselves seriously at all and don't attempt to do any reporting/breakdown/game analysis. It is basically a message board for game threads and very fluffy game/series previews. There is no reason whatsoever for the Padres organization to acknowledge that site at all.

Garfinkel has given them access to all kinds of different Padres events (high dollar season ticket holder events, private tours of the ballpark/clubhouse, etc) like they are MLB Network. He has found them in their seats and watched portions of games with them. They obviously love him.
He understands how important it is to give fans as much access as he can to keep them invested. From that standpoint, I would like the hire.

So did Garfinkel get fired?

CU AD position sounds like a huge step down in pay from MLB exec.

Tendered his resignation is what is being reported. Padres changed ownership at the end of last season and this is the first significant personnel change. Not sure if it is fired or a genuine resignation.

I like both of the main candidates mentioned so far, and have no issues with either. Actually, both are far better than I had hoped for. Unfortunatly, there is no indication either one is interested in the position, is there?

He will never be hired here with that kind if attitude.

I don't really buy this either. CU needs someone out of the box with innovative ideas imo. Sports experience is a must however

I don't quite understand why the "Rain Man" comment caused a big stir. Slow news week, maybe?

Garfinkel wasn't picking the players or coaching them. As long as there aren't reports that training facilities, minor league systems, scouting, payroll, etc. weren't underfunded during his watch - then how the team performed on the field is not relevant to his job evaluation.

So would CU be hiring Garfinkel just to fund raise? Or would he be expected to occasional make decisions regarding the competitive status of CU's various sports?
