Toney Clemons

sorry if this has already been mentioned - haven't had the time to read all the game and post game threads. While his stats (5 for 115, TD) speak for themselves, TClem's performance when the ball was not in his hands or being thrown to him was equally outstanding.

I watched the highlight video, and there were two long plays that stood out that were made even longer thanks to Toney's down field blocking - something I can't remember our WRs doing in a long time.

The first one was Canty's catch and run. Towards the end of the play, Canty goes racing by Toney who has knock his CB off his feet. Probably added another 10 yards to the play.

The second that stood out was on Tyler's zone read run. Toney had his CB completely tied up, giving Tyler another 5 to 10 yards.

I wish I could see more game film. The highlight video is too focused on the center of the action, so its hard to see what others are doing. But from what I could see, I love the way TClem is stepping up all aspects of his game.

You can talk about the technical aspects of what the players are doing and that makes a lot of sense. We have a bunch of guys on the coaching staff who have been NFL level position coaches and you don't last in that world unless you get results.

I may be imagining things but more important to me is that over the course of the season I am seeing an attitude change on the team. The old flat emotional response that was drilled in by the Hawkins bunch is getting replaced by an observable emotional buy-in by the players on the field. Guys are looking like they care about what happens, they not only get excited when they make a good play or upset when they mess up but are showing the same emotions for team stuff.

The result of the buy in is things like beltway mentions in the OP, WRs making the extra effort to get the block or maintain the block. We see guys on the backside of a play making their blocks which normally wouldn't matter if the play runs as designed but if it cuts back then that block matters.

Clemons is one who has really stepped up his game in all aspects. We always could see that he had the talent but wondered when we would see it play out on the field, now we are. He is making a difference as a player and not just when the play is designed for him.

+1. I saw the exact same thing. In the Arizona game he showed a great physicality in both his receiving and his blocking. I give him a ton of credit for manning up and having a heart to heart with Embo. I think Embo told him what NFL WR scouts look for (and specifically said last week that scouts were asking about Clemmons) and that TClem has taken that all to heart and is working his ass off in hopes of getting a look at the next level. I wish he would have gotten to this point a bit earlier, but better late than never!

Agreed. Along with everybody else's posts. One thing I see out of Toney that is really exciting is just his demeanor. The dude is flat out confident and it shows. I was also watching the db that was covering him and his body language was the exact opposite. The guy just kept shaking his head knowing that there was nothing he could do.

Kudos to him. But also credit some of our younger players. In one of the early games this year, I noticed Tyler Mac doing some nice down field blocking.

It bodes well for the future if all of the wr's understand that this is an important aspect of the offense.

It sucks that the players are just now (the last couple weeks) buying into Embo's philosophy. But it is a great sign of what we have to look forward to. I think it is hard for a player to go from HaLkins style to a guy like Embo that won't take no ****.

Clemmons is a totally different player than what we saw at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, so is Richardson.

It was good to see his performance in that game. I was really impressed by his attitude in the 850 postgame interview. Very well spoken, humble, thankful, and focused on the upcoming games. You don't always get that from emotional WRs after big games.

I hope that our coaching staff encourages him to remain plugged into the system in upcoming years. I would think his impressions of the coaching philosophy for the WRs, and his improving prospects would be very well received by incoming recruits.

The most refreshing part of this for me is actually seeing a player who steps up and improves through the year. That was something sorely missing during the Hawkins era. What you saw the first week or two was pretty much what you were going to get the rest of the way.

Now, it'll be nice to see if all of this (Clemons and the rest of the team) was a one week thing or if they can beat fUCLA down.

I cant speak for anyone else, but I have a good feeling he will make a play when he is one on one. I couldnt say that earlier this year. He keeps it up, hes gonna have a shot to get to where he wants to go. Takes a man to step up and he's doing it, props to him.

Actually I am pleasantly surprised that it has started to happen in the first year, although it helps to have a large senior class. Many times it does not happen until the second year.

What makes you say they have? Just because we won?

Nope. I've seen improvement from the start of the season to the middle of the season to now with a lot of the players. The USC game was the point that it clicked for me. We'll see how they do Saturday. Speedy, Hansen, Webb, Major, Clemons, Espy, Sandersfield, Orms, so many players look better than ever.

Yep. We're gonna win.

Ive seen improvement here and there all year but more so the last 2 weeks. The effort has been raised and the coaches have adjusted as well. We ran alot of zone on running plays last week and that fits Speedy. Body on a body and let him make the cut. Plus, we have got healthier in the secondary, Orms makes a big difference. Forgot to mention TClem has stepped up his play, that deserves to be mentioned as well.

It is his thread after all.

You haven't seen a change this season?

Players getting better throughout the season is to be expected imo. As of now I'm still skeptical, but a road win would go a huge way with me

Didn't we say that about Hawaii too? I don't mean to piss on a positive thread... I just think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves right now
You mean 11 games ago? Nothing's changed? You expect to lose? This game is ours to win. Could we lose? Yes. Winnable? Very. Courage!
