I am on a trip taking one of my daughters from home (NC) back to school in St. George, UT. I grew up in Lafayette, and have been a die hard Buff fan since I was 12. Ardent fan, loyal to the team, root for them no matter what (which has been hard to do through the 2000's). Anyway, I stayed a couple nights in Denver with my brother and one day he and I and my daughter ventured to Boulder. We spent some time on Pearl St., met up with my brother's wife for lunch, then went over to campus to walk around a bit (my sister in law works for CU). We walked the football stadium concourse, then went over to the team store (which is across a hallway from the practice facility). I was looking around, and noticed a guy that looked familiar but couldn't put a finger on it. I asked him about the practice facility and if one of the other double doors was the locker room. He explained what each building was, and then was on his way (I knew full well what was what, just reaching a bit, hoping to get a look inside the practice facility).
But just as this guy began to walk away, he turned back and said, "you want to take a look at the practice facility?" UM, YES!! He opened it up for us, gave us some details and facts. I asked about the solar, etc. and we had some general Buff convo. I then introduced myself, and he introduced himself - Lance Carl. I of course knew he was an original Coach Mac guy, and we talked about the building of the 80's. Then he says "Do you guys have some time? If so I can take you on a tour of the practice facility and the champions center." UMMM, YES AGAIN.
Long story short, I saw it all (except the party deck bc there was an event there). Locker room (and met several players including D. Lee, KD Nixon, and S. Montez), National Championship trophy room, Heisman and National Trophy hall, training rooms, coaches offices, seating areas pretty much anything you could imagine. Walked through Coach Mac's office and saw the recruiting room. He even took us to meet Rick George, but he was in a meeting, so major bummer there. Once I get back home I am sending Kudos to him through the AD.
Here are a few things I noticed. First, there are a lot of folks in the business of big time college sports that are arrogant. They know everything, and joe public is stupid. That is opposite of the culture that I experienced. Everyone I met was courteous, humble and willing to talk and listen. Second, while there may be bigger and better and more money laden facilities elsewhere, the Buffs are competitive with any program in the country facilities wise. Third, our players are professional. I met about 10-12 two deep players. Every one was well spoken, looked me in the eyes, and were conversational. They all assured me the Buffs will roll the lambs in the RMS, and that they will be coming home from the big N with a W. Finally, the culture set in the athletic department is infectious. Everyone, from the coaches, to trainers, to supports staff to team store employees are energetic and seem genuinely happy to be there.
Good things don't always happen to those who deserve it the most, but if it goes how it should this year, the Buffs will be National Champions. I got a bunch of great pics and I will try to post later (I am a bit of a tech idiot). Also, if any of you have any questions about facilities or anything feel free to ask. We really did see it all. Just amazing!!!
