SEATTLE - A huge weekend of track and field takes over the Dempsey this weekend, with the UW Invitational set to be bigger and better than ever. Starting with the standard outstanding fields mixing many of the NCAA's best along with some of the best pro athletes in the world, this year's UW Invite features a 32-foot by 19-foot suspended video board to let fans follow every move around the track, a live stream on Flotrack.org, and for the first time, a high school-only event on Sunday.
Things get underway on Friday afternoon with the men's heptathlon, and the women's pentathlon starts at 2 p.m. Outside of the multis, the first open running events will start at 5 p.m. with the 200-meter dashes. Much-anticipated distace medley relays and 5,000-meter races will also take place Friday evening, as will the weight throws in the infield, and one flight of the women's pole vault.
Saturday cranks up at 9:15 a.m. with the first track race of the day. As in recent years, the UW Invitational breaks several of the running events into Invitational Sections, grouping the top one or two heats of the 400m, 800m, Mile, and 3000m and scheduling them together in the afternoon between 3-5 p.m. so fans can see the top heats in a shorter time frame. The 4x400m relays go last at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Saturday
The high school competition on Sunday begins bright and early at 8:00 a.m. and will follow a rolling time schedule.
The Husky contingent will be joined by large turnouts from BYU, Hawaii, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Portland, Portland State, Oregon State, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, UC Davis, and Gonzaga. Many other top teams will send select athletes, focusing mostly in the distance events, and including Arizona, Boise State, Butler, California, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, and Utah.
Highlighting the post-collegiate pros in attendance this weekend is a large contingent from the U.S. Olympic Training Facility in Chula Vista, Calif. Entries from that group include Will Claye, a silver medalist (triple jump), bronze medalist (long jump) in the 2012 Olympics, 2012 Olympian Amanda Smock, among several other jumpers, sprinters, and throwers. Joe Kovacs, sixth in the shot put at the U.S. Outdoors last year, was a disciple of current UW coach T.J. Crater at Penn State. Also look out for Tia Brooks in the women's shot, as the Nike athlete was a 2012 Olympian and runner-up at the USA Championships last year.
Olympic decathlon gold medalist Ashton Eaton, who can lay claim to world's top athlete honors, is also scheduled to compete along with his wife, Brianne Theisen, who won silver in the heptathlon at the 2013 World Championships. They hold the Dempsey heptathlon and pentathlon facility records. A number of Oregon Track Club athletes will be on hand, as well as a large showing from the Oiselle team, which features former Huskies Christine Babcock and Mel Lawrence.
The distance races will be a big focal point this week, with Husky All-American Megan Goethals leading the way on the women's side. Goethals is entered in both the 5,000m and 3,000m. She is the school record-holder in the indoor and outdoor 5k. Freshmen Kaylee Flanagan and Katie Knight will also be in the fast heat of the 3k. In the women's mile invite, junior Eleanor Fulton and freshman Amy-Eloise Neale will see how they stack up in a talented heat.
The men's mile top heat features American steeplechase record-holder, and 3:54 miler, Evan Jager of Nike. American mile record-holder Alan Webb has announced he will be retiring from track soon, but first he's looking for another sub-4 mile in the Dempsey on Saturday. Huskies James Cameron, Blake Nelson, and Meron Simon will get a chance to run with the big names as the Dempsey looks to start on its second hundred 4-minute-miles. Sophomore Izaic Yorks will be in the top heat of the men's 800-meters, another big race to watch.
In the sprints, the men's 60-meters should be a brisk one, as 2012 Olympian Ryan Bailey, one of the ten fastest Americans ever with a 100m best of 9.88, is entered. Huskies Matt Anthony, Travis Marshall, and Quadelle Satterwhite will look to lower their season-bests and get a shot at lining up alongside Bailey. Freshman Andrew Brown will get a shot in the top invite heat of the 400-meters, while Howard Lao looks to build on a good opener in the 60m hurdles.
In the women's sprints, Gianna Woodruff is scheduled to make her season debut in the 60-meters, as the 400m hurdler works back from a stress fracture last summer. Her hurdles training partner Kayla Stueckle is in the first invite heat of the women's 400-meters, and Kimberly Stueckle will look to post another PR in the 60m hurdles after she opened with one two weeks back.
One of the draws in the field events this week will be to see how several new Huskies follow up their excellent debuts from the UW Indoor Preview. Transfer Diamara Planell Cruz posted the No. 2 pole vault in school history, just shy of 14-feet. Freshman Elizabeth Quick also had a strong vault debut, jumping just under 13-feet, while also high jumping 5-5, and another transfer, Joe Knight, cleared 6-10 1/4 in the men's high jump two weeks ago in his first outing. Also looking strong two week ago was junior transfer Brian Hutchison in the shot put, as he threw 53-7 1/2 in his season opener.
Dual meet scoring will be provided for the following:
BYU, UC-Davis, Portland, Fresno State, San Jose State, Cal Poly, Gonzaga, UC-Irvine, UC-Riverside, Washington
