Why oh why oh why don't our defensive backs turn their heads toward the ball? How many throws coming in to the receiver that are caught could've been knocked down or even intercepted if our defender WOULD JUST TURN HIS HEAD!?
 
Today made no sense, as most of the time our d backs were in good position and weren't trying to catch the receiver. Horrible technique, and we should've been able to pick one or two if heads were turned.
 
Crawley and Bell were both in perfect position to intercept the ball in the 1st quarter if they had just turned there heads. The Crawley one lead to a USC TD a few plays later, not sure about Bell's...
 
Crawley was right next to the CU sideline. Don't they yell "BALL" or something?
 
The last thing you do is turn around or your head. Get your hands up and break up the ball. Crawley was too late, he never makes a play on the ball.
 
If I'm not mistaken, Hendo got cheesed by some serious anti-turning inertia as well. That one surprised me because he's usually our most solid in coverage.

No. If you're stride for stride with the WR and see him slowing his route or turning his head back and moving his body position the corner needs to start looking for the ball as well. Will you get burned sometimes? Yup but you could have also saved 7 points if you intercepted that pass, potentially gotten 3 or 7 points out of it (although not likely since it was in the 1st half).

What? You always turn your head prior to the ball arriving, especially when you're in good position.

If a coach ever taught you not to, he was an idiot.
 
You are never supposed to look for a ball until you see the WR hands going up to get it. If you start looking before that you will get destroyed on double moves or just get straight burned up the field. They are in the right spots and could be making the plays. If we were playing CSU or Cal they would be making those plays. Crawley and Hendo were in good spots a lot of the game..... IMO this is just the talent difference we have with the big schools right now. USC receivers are 5 star bad ass kids who will just go get the ball even if you are in the right position. They don't put their hands up until the ball is almost there leaving almost no time for the DB to turn. I think both are solid corners but they are not gonna shutdown 5 star USC receivers.
 
Hell his eyes will tell u when the ball is coming. Does anybody do the pass, ball, bingo drill anymore?
 
It took me a while to find the right word last night to describe Crawley. Last year we saw talent and fight. This year he's playing with some sort of malaise that must be shaken.
 
Crawley is infuriating at times. All that talent, and he just doesn't seem to put it together. You know it's there. I sincerely hope we can get him to play up to his potential next year. Time is running out. He's an NFL corner if he can play to his potential.

Said that about 10 times while at the game. Agree with this! Weird this is not improving.

The problem was not getting his hands up. He gets his hands up and deflects the ball, everyone is happy

I have complained vociferously about this very thing since back in the Talkins days. It drives me nuts. Can't tell you how many big plays and/or tds we've given away on balls that could have been picked or at least batted down. :bang:

Not to mention that if you're not looking back at the ball, you're much more likely to be flagged for PI if you make any contact at all with the receiver.
