The University of Denver fired their head coach Joe Scott earlier today. ESPN is reporting that DU plans to hire Rodney Billups as their new head coach. Rodney played at DU from 2002 to 2005.
I wasn't expecting Rodney's career to take off so quickly but the move makes a lot of sense for DU. Rodney is about as plugged in to the Denver hoops scene as anybody. I wish people would stop referring to him solely as Chauncey's little brother but maybe this will give him a chance to make a name for himself. He's young, has been a part of a winning organization for several years (CU), and might be able to help DU with recruiting. The move also makes me wonder if CU and DU will start a home and home series in the future.
The University of Denver has a very aggressive Athletic Director. During her time at DU she has already hired a legendary lacrosse coach, Bill Tierney, who won the NCAA championship with DU last year, first team West of North Carolina to win it. She also fired a successful hockey coach, George Gwozdecky, and replaced him with an up-and-comer, Jim Montogomery. The hockey program has remained successful. If the news is true I wish Rodney the best of success and who knows, maybe his path will wander through Boulder again someday.
I don't know if this is the appropriate thread to start speculating on who will be hired to replace Rodney.
