University of Rochester Football Players Kidnapped and Tortured

Horrible story. I couldn't help but notice the author really tried to place blame for the whole thing on the Rochester coaches. Suggesting that had they been more diligent with Smith, this wouldn't have happened. Maybe, maybe not. Did the same author pen the article about Tumpkin? Has the same feel to it.

Coach isn't supposed to be bailing players out of jail on his own dime and not reporting anything.

scary, but in the end it had almost nothing to do with sports. espn knows violence and sex attracts

Maybe he did report it.

I honestly don't know. It's a horrible story and it just seemed to me like it was another attempt to try to paint a coach as caring more about football than people.

Worst story I've read in months.
That is one police report and court transcript I have zero desire to read.

That's how you do sentencing for guys like that.

NINE PEOPLE WENT to prison for the kidnapping and torture of Kollias and his teammate. Three were sentenced for watching over the captives and acting as lookouts. Samantha Hughes and Leah Gigliotti pleaded guilty and testified against the others. They were each sentenced to more than a dozen years in prison. Three of the four men in the cellphone video recording of the torture, including Elliot Rivera, also pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 35 years in prison. During Lydell Strickland's trial in December 2016, prosecutors described him as the "ringleader" and "mastermind" of the plot. He laughed when a judge sentenced him to 155 years in prison.

It's still not clear to me why they kidnapped this particular guy and his teammate. The girl became friends with them on facebook, said she wanted to meet, then took them to the torture house. But why them when they had nothing to do with the initial robbery and barely knew the star linebacker who was involved? Were these kidnappers and torturers so incompetent that they weren't even able to find and kidnap the right guy?

People who are this cold are probably beyond being significantly impacted by any form of punishment or rehabilitation. At this point the number one priority needs to be putting them somewhere that will keep them from harming others. These sentences if fully imposed should be a good step in that direction.

I can't even fathom what they went through. Unreal that there are people out there who have this little regard to life.

Yes. They only knew where the original attack happened and assumed that the residents were involved.

Yes. They only knew where the original attack happened and assumed that the residents were involved.

But they seemed to know the two weren't involved. They said as much:

"As his attackers continue to hit Kollias with their improvised weapons, Strickland tells the camera, "Look at your boy. He got nothing to do with this; he started running.""

and,

"The men knew that Kollias, who is white, was not involved in the drug robbery, but they still seemed to have plans for him. For now, those plans required him to stay alive."

I don't get it. Why didn't they kidnap and torture Smith if he orchestrated the whole thing? It's like the kidnappers just wanted to make a point by torturing friends of Smith, but Smith and Kollias barely knew each other. The whole thing is just weird.

I don't know. Cruelty? Kollias was hanging out with one of the residents, and they both arrived with the girls together, so I assume they decided to torture both of them rather than letting him go and get help. Maybe, they could have just locked him up someplace, but it seems they decided to rob him, etc. since they had the opportunity.

Criminals are stupid?

Hate is an ugly thing. In my mind, once you cross the line, reasoning doesn't even matter anymore. Dude is very lucky he's alive.

No value for life at all. How the victims aren't dead Idk. Pretty sure they were about to be.

"He's like, 'Let's go. Let's go be with these girls,'" Kollias says. "And it didn't seem like that bad of an idea. Just want to meet new people, and never really think of girls as, like, evil or mean."

For some reason, this passage bums me out. I hope Kollias is able to live his life, find a trusting relationship, and be able to raise a family, if that's what he wants to do.

For as bad as the two days of abuse and torture were, they are over. At lest many of the physical wounds can heal.

It's those aweful mental wounds that can traumatize a person for a long, long time.

T&P for Kollias to fully recover in every way.

I hope all involved die in prison or they send them to North Korea. How could you do that to another human being.

Psychological pain is the worst of all. You say long, long time which is usually right. Not for everyone but most. I was one of the most.,

I got the impression from the article that they didn't know it was Smith. They knew it was Football player and Smith arraigned the initial robbery in their room to stay anonymous. He set it up to make it look like he was getting robbed as well.
