Offensive Skills Irregardless of whether or not recent research shows that free throw percentages have not increased over time, I still think that dedicating a certain amount of practice time to free-throw shooting is important. In so much as it has a negligible affect on your team's free-throw percentage, free-throws are more about establishing a routine such that players can rely on that routine despite the incredible pressure and anxiety they may experience at the end of the game with the game hanging in the balance.

Here are some general tips from some notes I have from Mike Dunlap:

Physical:
1. Legs - you shoot with your legs (ie. every shot finished with player on tip toes).
2. Follow Through - elbow points to rim and hold gooseneck for count of at least 2 everytime.
3. Eyes - on target at all times

Mental:
1. Breathing - teach your players that breathing is an important vehicle in relaxation
2. Visualization - the player should see himself making the shot before he steps to the line.

Miscellaneous:
- get a system that you can incoporate into your daily practice.
- practice time allotment to freethrows must remain consistent.
- make a big deal out of freethrows

Drills:
1. 5 point game
a) 5 points for a swish (no rim)
b) 4 points when the ball hits any part of the rim
c) 3 points when the ball hits both sides of the rim
d) 2 points when the ball hits rim three times, rattles, etc..
e) 1 point when the ball rolls around the rim or hits backboard
f) 0 points for a miss

2. The lap game
a) Divide your team into 2, 3, 4, etc.. groups
b) Each player gets one shot
c) If the first player makes his shot and the second player misses, then the player who misses must spring a lap
d) If the first 2 players make their shots but the third misses then he runs 2 laps... and so forth
* A good game because pressure steadily increases on the players as shots are made.

3. The basket game
Each player must make a freethrow at each basket in the gym consecutively or he must start over (ie. you can name any number you want).
* Breaks the routine of the shooter and forces the players to adjust.

If you like Mike Dunlap, then take a look at a DVD he co-created with Pete Newell on Big Man Skill Development. Coach Dunlap was formerly head coach at Metro State and is now an assistant with the University of Oregon.

Nice to read something from CU's next HC.

I still think that move to UO for Dunlap is interesting/strange. Kent all but got fired last year so that's a pretty unstable situation after the horrendous conference record the Ducks had and he just came from the Lute/U of A carnival ride.

I don't know if Dunlap will ever end up at CU, but he and Hawkins have a few similarities about their approach to life, tough love, and high standards/expectations for student athletes. It would be an interesting alliance.

He turned us down once, and I doubt he'll ever really consider coming here. I think Dunlap knows he can get a better job out there. jmo.

If there's a vacancy in Boulder anytime soon and Dunlap is a no-no, I'll gladly take Kent. 2 Elite Eights and an average of 18 wins a season at Oregon. Not bad at all.

i have a buddy who is a UO guy and he always (even before last year) thinks Ernie is a great recruiter but generally under-achieves with the talent he's got. he's had a couple McD's types....Malik Hairston and some other dude and didn't really do much. Hairston was big-time 5 star and i think he played all 4 years and not because he was humping for a degree. kind of a rich-man's Ricardo Patton, in that regard. i like Ernie OK. we could do worse.

that team with Ridnour and Luke Jackson and the big Swede at the 5 and the forward who was a good player who's name i forget (Freddie Jones?)....they were fun to watch.

Good article.

Dunlap known for working wonders, on and off court
Potential CU coaching candidate has large, loyal following

This is just an educated guess.

If all the people who have competed against Mike Dunlap were put in a room with all the people who have played for him or worked with him during his coaching career, and they were asked to speak up if they believed the University of Colorado shouldn't make the man its next basketball coach, crickets might be heard chirping.

But many of those people might not point to Dunlap's success on the basketball court as the primary reason why he should be snapped up without another minute delay. The man cares about people. That, more than anything else, makes him successful.

Brannon Hays first began to really understand this 15 years ago when he played for Dunlap at Cal-Lutheran in the early 1990s, and the realization that his coach had become a friend for life hit home a few years later.

Hays worked along side Dunlap in the Australian professional league with the Adelaide 36ers in the mid-1990s as Dunlap's assistant coach. He
didn't know many people in the country and was a world away from family and friends when he learned he needed to have an emergency apendectomy.

I've stated before that I like Bzdelik. He's a strong fundamental basketball coach and that he's built a great foundation for CU basketball. I also believe that we see the team turn the corner this year with wins and losses.

But I'm almost positive he's going to leave for the NBA after this year, so I'm hoping we get the funding to break ground on the practice facility and the AD gets the buyout money when Coach Bz gets hired away. And Dunlap is the guy I want for 2010. He'd have 2 open scholarships that he can fill late since Bz hasn't done a thing to land someone during the early period. He'd also have a very deep and experienced team coming back. He'd be in a great position to win early and really build this thing to a point where he could enjoy staying at CU a long time.

Correct me if wrong, but I thought the general summary was that Dunlap had a courtesy meeting with CU but it was evident already they were going with Bzed. Dunlap and CU shook hands, left friends, and went their own way.
I totally don't remember any official word that CU actually offered; I thought maybe after a private discussion, they (CU and Dunlap) believed it was wrong timing for Dunlap.

I got the feeling he wanted to assist somewhere, not take over a program until he'd worked with an experienced D1 coach.

I could be wrong. What do you remember?

You could be right. But I remember him telling CU he wasn't interested.

Ducks associate head coach Mike Dunlap talks Arizona

As the University of Oregon waits for a fax from high school star Jamil Wilson at the start of the late signing period, the Arizona Wildcats will welcome back recruit Solomon Hill.

One man who is pleased about that is new Oregon associate head coach Mike Dunlap, who refused the Wildcats' head job because it came with an "interim'' tag.

"In order to follow a legend ... you better have your gun loaded to have your best chance to succeed,'' Dunlap said, referring to former Arizona coach Lute Olson. "I said don't pick me, pick another guy, but don't give him the interim tag. There's no way, within 24 or 48 hours, that anybody can hold onto those kids with an interim tag'

You could be right. But I remember him telling CU he wasn't interested.

Yes, but at that time he had kids in middle school/high school and possibly didn't want to be torn between between a dad and running a D1 program. Something like that. I got the feeling the meeting with CU was a formality, a breakfast I think, to appease some major donors, but Dunlap said "Thanks, but not the right time."

It wasn't that he turned CU down, per se, if they just had an exploratory breakfast, not an offer. Just my vague recollection.

In a sense, the same thing he told AZ "I said don't pick me, pick another guy..."

I hope bdzlk stays long enough to get the program moving in the right direction. But if Dunlap and CU come to terms someday, I'd be happy to see that too.

Doesn't the AD really want Mark Few?

He told them he wasn't interested after being interviewed and left dangling in the wind for a period of time. . All coaches say they are withdrawing themselves from consideration after being passed over.
