Volleyball Off Season News (Black and Gold Scrimmage 8/19 @ 3:00; 1st match, hosting UNLV, Aug. 25th.)

Looks like the team submitted a new tweet with a corrected time for Ms. Kuehl's match.

From the below tweets, assume today was picture day, which I believe normally equates to tomorrow being the 1st pre-season practices leading up to the season opener on the 25th.

It's fall sport media day.

Below is the press conference that included the head coach and 2 players for/ on the volleyball and soccer teams. The volleyball portion is the 1st one and goes up to ~17:10, with Taylor Simpson and Maya Tabron being the student-athletes included.

Some fun data on transfers as it relates to Pac 12 volleyball, as well as a list of all of the incoming ones. ( Also looks like the Buffs are in a 3 way tie in the conference with the largest roster (19).)

Preview for Saturday's scrimmage (and some quotes from Coach Mahoney as to various players, and the preseason, heading into the new season).

BOULDER – The Colorado Women's Volleyball team will hold their annual Black and Gold Scrimmage this Saturday. The match will take place at 3 p.m. in the CU Events Center.

Head Coach Jesse Mahoney will enter his eighth season with the Buffs coming off a 20-11 record last season and earning the program's 19th NCAA tournament appearance. It is the second time Mahoney has reached the 20-win mark with CU and the first since 2017. He also notched his 100th career win against longtime rival Colorado State.

"We're really excited about the upcoming season," Mahoney stated. "We have a nice mix of veteran leadership and players that got quite a bit of time on the floor last year and then a lot of younger players that are searching for roles and we expect to be able to count on them this season as well."

The team traveled to Europe back in June where they competed in Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, and Italy. They went undefeated in a two-week span across five separate matches.

"We're really lucky to have been able to go to Europe in June," said Mahoney. "Selfishly for me as a coach, we got eight extra practices and five competitions and then also got an opportunity to really get to know each other and get to know this new team, so I'm excited about that."

The Buffs will welcome back their two highest scorers, Maya Tabron and Lexi Hadrych. Both outside hitters recorded more than 350 kills with Tabron logging 362 and Hadrych with 361. That marks back-to-back years with Tabron as Colorado's leading scorer, and she will look to accomplish that feat again this season.

Colorado enters this season with a different look compared to the beginning of last year, as they are rostering six new first years and one transfer, after seven Buffs graduated this last spring. The returners include Maya Tabron, Lexi Hadrych, Alexia Kuehl, Taylor Simpson. Kuehl will lead the charge in the defensive front of the net. Kuehl recorded 126 of the team's 302 total blocks last season, while Simpson led the team in assists with 897.

"Maya Tabron and Taylor Simpson have done a great job. They were a big part of what we did last season. I expect them to be a big part of this season as well," Mahoney said. "We have transfer Skyy Howard, who is the most athletic player on our team. I think she's going to open some eyes for sure. Alexia Kuehl just got back last night from her trip to China playing with Germany's Under-23 team. We have a couple of first years that are going to open some eyes as well. We have a large group of players that are going to compete and I'm really excited about the athleticism of this group, and I'm looking forward to seeing who steps up for us."

Colorado's scrimmage is free to the public and will begin at 3 p.m. Fans who attend the match will receive a CU license holder.

After the scrimmage, the Buffaloes start the season at home with two-straight tournaments that include matches against UNLV, Campbell, and North Texas in the Buffs Invitational. CU will then host the Colorado Classic with UNC, Xavier, and Charlotte. CU will close out the non-conference part of the schedule with a trip to Kansas for the Wichita State Invitational before the home-and-home series with CSU for the Golden Spike Trophy.

The Buffs are picked to finish 5th 6th in the just released Pac 12 coaches' pre-season conference poll. (Of course, pre-season polls are usually worth less than a grain of salt.)

Edit - Short CU article on the poll - https://cubuffs.com/news/2023/8/18/pac-12-releases-preseason-volleyball-poll.aspx

BOULDER – The 2023 Pac-12 Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll was announced Friday morning, with the Buffaloes being slotted sixth in the conference.

This marks the highest preseason Pac-12 ranking for the Buffs and Coach Mahoney since the 2018 season, when they were projected to finish fifth. CU ended last season with a 20-11 record, good enough for a fifth place finish in the conference and four spots higher than predicted from the 2022 preseason poll.

2022 Overview

Colorado earned a winning record (12-8) against their fellow Pac-12 opponents last season for the first time since 2017 when they also had a record of 12-8. All 12 of CU's conference wins lasted four sets or less, including five sweeps.

A significant win for the Buffs took place against Washington last year. After losing the previous 10 matchups in Seattle against the Huskies, the Buffs took down No. 21 ranked Washington in three sets, completing the sweep and earning the program's first ever win inside of Alaska Airlines Arena. CU also swept USC and UCLA at home for the first time in school history during alumnae weekend back in October.

For 2023, the Buffs are scheduled to play 11 non-conference matches, including two home tournaments to open the season. Colorado will open with conference play in September when they welcome Utah and Stanford to the CU Events Center.

Looks like the conference coaches, who I assume follow their conference-mate a LOT more closely than the nation's coaches in general, think more highly of the Buffs than the nation's coaches in general do. In the pre-season national poll ( https://www.avca.org/polls-awards/polls/?_season=2023&_divisions=division-i-women&_weeks=preseason), the Buffs didn't receive any votes. But, overall, the poll has 6 Pac teams receiving votes, 4 (Stanford (#3), Oregon (#9), WSU (#21) and USC (#22)) ranked, and 2 others receiving votes (Washington (28th most votes and Utah (38th most votes)).

Did anyone happen to attend? Didn't look like many people were there in the video.
It was an interesting scrimmage. CU has a good amount of talent. The key for them will be if they can pass. game 2 and 3 the passing was sketchy and it did not allow them to get into any offense. I like the freshman, but again ball handling is a huge key for them this year

Hopefully the freshmen mature quickly as when they get to Pac-12 play, passing is key.

Thanks for the report.

They played 4 sets and set 4 was so much better on both sides of the net in terms of ball control. I really liked Ana B. She just got here from Croatia. She has a whip of an arm and really takes pride in her passing as she shanked one and you could see she was a little upset with herself and then on the next serve she passed a good pass. If they get that figured out they can finish higher than picked in the pac 12. Myra is still the best player they have. Sucks to not see Jahara out their with the injury
