Washington football recruit looks like he has a promising baseball career

Or maybe not.

We told you yesterday about Shaq Thompson, the UW football recruit who is giving baseball a go in the Red Sox system. His career stats, since being drafted by Boston in the 18th round, are incredible: Not a single hit, and all but one of his outs have been strikeouts. (To be totally fair, he has seven eight walks.) The Gulf Coast League Red Sox beat their Oriole counterparts this afternoon, pummelling them to the tune of a 16-1 score. Shaq Thompson went 0-for-5, with five strikeouts.

How bad of a pitcher are you if you are walking this guy?

Supposedly he is earning $80k just to quit before Fall practice. That doesn't seem fair, especially with Bloom not being able to accept $

Bloom could have accepted any award compensation for his skiing that he wanted to. He just couldn't sign an endorsement deal.

yeah that's like a waitress only working for the hourly wage and not able to earn tips...shenanigans.

Who's paying the $80K ?

the Red Sox... he signed a $100k baseball contract (but will be reporting to Udub for football a couple days before fall camp begins). Jake Locker signed a baseball contract with the Angels while at Udub, I think he made around $250k from the Angels while playing football for Washington. The NCAA allows you to be professional in one sport, and amateur in football, as long as you don't accept any advertising money from third parties (or hire an agent for football).

Many, MANY players over the decades have been paid in one sport, and remained amateur in others. This is nothing new.

Maybe Embree saw his baseball highlights and that's why we didn't offer.

In all seriousness though, if his HS highlights are any indication, he'll be a stud on the football field.

Baseball is a safe and easy sport. You earn millions and risk little in the way of life-altering injuries and early death from brain trauma or major sports trauma.

If my kid has the potential to go pro in baseball vs. another sport it's baseball all the way...

Shaq is a stud. Hopefully his pay keeps him off scholarship for UW. It's wrong to allow some athletes to collect this money and not others though. The NCAA is almost as inept as our Congress...
