THE GAME: No. 22 (AP)/23 (USA Today Sports/Coaches) ranked
University of Colorado continues a four-game swing through the state
of California with No. 18 (AP)/19 (USAT) ranked UCLA on Friday,
Feb. 1, at 9 p.m. MT at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

BROADCAST: Friday’s game will be televised nationally on the Pac-
12 Network. Anne Marie Anderson will handle play-by-play duties
with Tammy Blackburn providing the color commentary. Friday’s
game will be broadcast live on KKZN AM 760. Mike Rice will have
the play-by-play with Carol Callan of USA Basketball providing the
color commentary.

Keys to the game: Avoid turnovers and hold Markel Walker in check. She leads the Bruins in scoring, assists and steals. Bruins are a high-scoring team, but don't shoot that well (37.5%). Chucky vs. Markel is worth tuning in for even if we weren't talking about a matchup of Top 25 teams. Both squads are good on the glass, so if one team grabs the edge that could tip the game. Also, UCLA can be prone to turnovers so CU's defensive pressure could pay dividends tonight. (Conversely, UCLA's one of the best in the nation at getting steals, so they're thinking the same.)

Bottom line: These teams are mirror images of each other. UCLA likes to play at a bit of a faster pace, but that's pretty much all that separates them. Buffs do go a bit deeper than the Bruins, though, so we need the bench to step up. Tonight will tell a lot about how things should shake out in the Pac-12 standings this year.

CU Athletics has yet to beat UCLA in any H2H sports since the start of the Pac-12. They're the last remaining team since the men dealt with Stanford. A win tonight would be a nice way to break that streak.

We will break that streak tonight! :gobuffs:

Even if this means I have to stay up past my bedtime. :) I don't like Friday games in the Pacific time zone. Doesn't start until 10 PM in Central time zone.

It's a massive game for both teams as it is their only regular season meeting and thus 3rd place in the conference regular season standings could be on the line. CU's is giving up the least amount of points in conference games and no one has scored 70 or more points on them this season. Should CU win tonight it most likely be through defense and rebounding.

Another factor is going to be confidence. CU has lost two in a row coming in and must put the Bay area trip behind them and just concentrate on UCLA and what they bring.

CU doesn't do well when the opposition gets physical. Even in the win against ASU they seemed to loose their confidence in the first half when the game was rough and not much was getting called. If UCLA isn't physical CU most likely will be able to run an organized offense that will be efficient.

Jamee Swan had come on recently and could be an X factor off the bench both in terms of rebounding and scoring.

17-3 run by UCLA. Unbelievable. How does this team continue to give up these huge runs?!?!? So frustrating.

23-3 run. CU is standing around watching UCLA play basketball. Too bad because they are much better than this.

When you're this awful on offense, you have no chance.

Defense is pretty much on schedule, but when you don't execute on O you just don't give yourself a chance.

Also, there's a weird echo every time the ball hits the rim at Pauley. It really emphasizes the bricks and puts the exclamation point on what I'm watching.

We should be happy to only be down 14 at half. (15-29 score)

15-29

20% shooting for the half. Outrebounded 14-24.

Buffs just didn't show up in the 1st half tonight. Need to come out and play their game in the 2nd half. Losing is one thing. Sleepwalking through a game and giving it away without a fight is inexcusable.

Showing some signs of life to start the 2nd half.

Down 13 with 15 1/2 minutes left. 24-37.

I think it's pretty clear that we lack enough size to compete with top 20 teams. We need to improve this part ASAP in order to go back to elite.

Can't get a rebound. The thing these last 3 games has taught me more than anything is that Lappe has to recruit a lot more size into the frontcourt if we want to challenge Stanford, Cal and UCLA. We've gotten completely out-muscled in our games against them.

UCLA is almost doubling us on the glass in this one.

Down 37-54 and absolutely the only reason that the Bruins have extended in the 2nd half is that we can't get a defensive rebound after forcing a miss. On one sequence, UCLA got offensive rebounds after 2 misses after they'd used a bunch of clock, then got fouled on a made basket on their third try... and then got the offensive rebound after the missed free throw for another possession. We're just getting killed.

Time to regroup. The high level of the opposition away from home back-to-back-to-back took its toll tonight. We cannot go 0-4 in Cali, we have to come out focused and beat USC.

Tonight we answer the question:

How is it possible to lose by 16 points on a night when you force 29 turnovers from the other team?

Answer:

You have to be completely horrible at every other aspect of the game.

28.6% shooting from the field, while allowing 55.6% shooting.

Get out-rebounded 26-43.

Give away 16 turnovers of your own.

Make only 2/13 3 pointers (15.4%).

Shoot only 57.1% on free throws.

Have your bench play so badly it makes it look like the starters had a good shooting night by comparison. (Reese, Sborov, Swan, A-Wil, MMP & K-West shot a combined 2/21 tonight.)

They better quickly put this behind them and figure out in a hurry how to deal with a team that has a lot of size. USC starts 4 players who are over 6 feet tall. Buffs cannot afford to lose on Sunday or even getting a 4-seed in the Pac-12 tourney could be out of reach.

Stunningly horrible from the Buffs. I don't know if the Bay area games took it out of them mentally and physically but after the first three or four minutes they were out of it in every way. No rebounding, horrific defense and not a shot seemed to be falling. Like the game against Cal and Stanford the physicality seems to get to them. In this game the Buffs had the early lead, then UCLA puts a bit of pressure on and CU wilts. Really disappointing.

I agree one of the previous posters who stated Lappe needs to recruit bigger, stronger post players who can stand up to the physical play down low.

USC at 10 am PT, CU better be ready to go. USC lost to Utah tonight. Let's hope CU can get back to .500 on Sunday.

Concerned about this already with Washington sitting 7-2, although they have to visit CU and still have to face Stanford, Cal and UCLA (all in Seattle)

USC sitting at 5-4 has CU, Stanford, Cal, UCLA all at home, and also a visit to UCLA.

Should pass the Trojans, but passing Washington could prove difficult. Our remaining schedule is MUCH more favorable than Washington's, but we're sitting 3 games behind them in the standings, so we have very little wiggle room to slip up..
