WBB: #22 CU @ USC (Sunday, 11am MT on PAC12-MTN)

USC (8-12, 5-4) had a disappointing non-conference performance, but has been pretty good in conference play. In fact, we're looking up at them in the standings right now. They're very talented, as Troy always recruits well in WBB.

Main questions today:

1. Are the Buffs (15-5, 4-5) burnt out after playing 3 straight ranked opponents on the road?

2. Can the Buffs deal with USC's size (4 starters over 6 feet tall)?

3. Will Arielle and Reese get their grooves back after a rough night at UCLA?

4. Will the game actually be televised on Pac-12 Mountain as promised despite my Comcast listing showing WBB Washington @ Arizona State (Ch. 430)? I don't want to have to watch the game at http://video.pac-12.com/

This is a game we should win if both teams play to form. I'm just not sure what CU team shows up in this one.

This is a tight game so far. Back and forth.

Buffs lead 21-18 with 5 1/2 minutes left in the 1st.

USC turned up the intensity and went on a 13-3 run to close the half.

Buffs trail 26-31.

Halftime stats:

We're winning the glass (22-15).
USC's winning the TOs (5-9).

Biggest reason for the USC lead is that they're 5/11 from 3pm range and 8/9 on FTs. Buffs are 2/11 and 2/6, respectively.

Buffs with a strong start to the 2nd half.

10-2 run for a 36-33 lead at the 14 minute mark.

Arielle with an aggressive take into contact on an extra possession gained by my girl Sborov diving for a loose rebound (smashing her elbow into the court).

3 point play for Ari. Buffs lead 41-33 with 12 minutes left.

Just gave USC a ****ing 3-possession offensive trip. Then turned it over.

57-49 with 2 minutes left.

Timeout Buffs with the ball and 1:45. Same score.

Good win. Not sure if they keep the top25 ranking or not, but they are going to a easier schedule now.

4 players in double figures and Chucky with 25th career double double. Took care of business today when they had to!

CU Friday and Sunday in Boulder my team.

Damn Pac 12 Network wouldn't validate my sign in so I couldn't watch. Can't stand the announcers anyway. Carol and Mike describe it so you can "see" it.

Congrats! :gobuffs:

65-49 FINAL.

Buffs move to 16-5 (5-5).

Next week we're home against Oregon State (Fri, 7pm) and Oregon (Sun, 1:30pm). Buffs should (and need to) roll both.

Stats from today's game via ESPN:

Arielle with 16 pts & 6 rebs.
Chucky with 15 & 10 + 3 asts.
Lexy with 11 & 6 + 3 stls.
B-Will with 12.
Sborov with 2 pts, but 6 rebs, 3 asts & 2 stls.

Buffs dominated the glass, 43-27. Great sign.

With a strong 2nd half, we also ended up with a slight edge on assists and turnovers.

Buffs also shot 40.5% from the field, which is decent. Our FG% defense was outstanding, holding USC to 27.5% shooting.

All in all, a great effort that gets things back on track while keeping us alive for that 4-seed in the P12 tourney. We need Washington (16-5, 8-2) to lose some games for that to happen, but they've got games with UCLA, Cal and Stanford remaining plus have to travel to Boulder. They're in our reach if we take care of business.

Crucial win, great to come out and get the W after the UCLA debacle. It gets favorable from here on out - let this be the start of a run and catch/pass Washington

Quick question: if we end up winning all most of the remain games(say lose 1) and still being on 5th seed in pac12, will we still be safe for tournament?

Yep.

Buffs really should win the final 9 games, including today, to close the season. Washington's the big fear in this stretch and ASU can be dangerous at home. But this road game at USC today was the one that worried me the most.

Even if we lost at home against Washington and ended up at 23-6, the RPI is now solidly into the Top 30. I'd be shocked if the Buffs didn't end up in the Dance and playing in Denver for the opening games.

Nik... agree with everything you said except for one critical point ... Buffs WBB making the dance means they play in BOULDER at the CEC for rounds one and two. Not in Denver.

Thanks. Glad you added the emphasis, too. We need to pack the house for that to make sure the Committee wants to return to Boulder in future years.

CU started to get their mojo back today. They really took chage for much of the second half by creating steals and scoring off of them. Much more of a team effort with four in double figures, lots of steals delivering a pummeling on the boards and playing hard right to the end. Points in the paint: CU 32, USC 14. That's Buff basketball!

I think they could have played a bit better, but they really delivered in the second half. CU outscored USC by 21 in the second, 39-18.

Stat of the game: attendance 249. Really? If this game was in Boulder there would have been at least 2500.

Arielle and Chucky seemed to get their offensive confidence back in this game.

Jen really is struggling in the offensive end.

The schedule gets a bit easier now :)

I was thinking the same thing -- what an embarrassment.

I'll just be honest here: This is definitely one of the (very few) downsides to the Pac. The passion at some schools is just downright lacking (and I'm fully aware that we aren't immune to it either, although we've made serious strides). When it comes to basketball, USC is by far the worst. "Huge" attendance for USC men is when they get 4,000.

I prefer the Big 12 over the Pac 12. Might be because I'm a staunch supporter of women's basketball. I loved going in to those rowdy, cheering crowds on the road in the years with the good teams and coming out with a W. It's quite satisfying. There was that kind of atmosphere at the Illinois game.

Part of the attendance issue yesterday might have had to do with it being a 10 AM game on Sunday--Super Bowl Sunday at that.

I do know that we were near the bottom in attendance in the Big 12 and near the top in the Pac 12. I like more passion in the arena.

The Buffs are ranked 21st. They will have to fall on their face from here on out to not make the dance since we are hosting.

It's such an opportunity, though, if we can grow attendance. CU will dominate west coast recruiting if we're Top 25 with the best home crowd in the west.

Very true. Kids love to play before crowds. It's more fun for them. Teams feed off the crowd. We did have a pretty decent attendance record during the best years for Coach Barry. She was able to build attendance then and it can be done again. Back then, they did it with a lot of gimmicks to get people in the doors to see a good product on the court. Then they were willing to pay for tickets.
