Coach Info:
Position: Assistant Coach
Alma Mater: Alcorn State
Experience: 1 Year

Jeff Cammon enters his second season as an assistant coach at California in the 2015-16 season.

Camon came to Cal after spending the previous five seasons as an assistant with the Long Beach State women’s basketball program. He attended the prestigious Villa 7 Consortium at Nike’s World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., in May, the same invite-only convention that current California assistant Charmin Smith and Kai Felton attended.

At Long Beach State, Cammon helped lead the program to five consecutive Big West Tournament berths. In 2012-13, the 49’ers also earned an at-large bid to the WNIT, marking the program's first national postseason tournament game in 13 years.

In 2011-12, LBSU advanced to the Big West Tournament championship game after defeating No. 2 seed Cal State Northridge and top-seeded Cal Poly. It was the first time in 11 years that the Black & Gold reached the finals.

In 2009-10, Cammon helped the 49ers to a fourth-place finish in conference play and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament. LBSU posted its first winning record in league play since 2005-06 with a 9-7 mark. Long Beach State returned to the Big West Tournament in 2010-11 after finishing sixth in the conference.

Cammon re-entered the collegiate coaching ranks after spending two years as the head girls' varsity basketball coach at Bishop Alemany High School, where he also taught history. Prior to that, Cammon had served as an assistant men's basketball coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College, Chaffey Community College and Alcorn State University.

As a student-athlete, Cammon was a three-year starting point guard and two-time team captain at Alcorn State. He helped lead the Braves to three conference championships and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2001-02.

Cammon earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Alcorn State in 2003 and a Masters of Education in Physical Education from his alma mater in 2005.

Nice to hire a coach away from a conference foe! Cal's 2016 recruiting class was 2 players, both ranked in the top 50 and rated 4 stars by ProspectsNation. For 2017, Cal has verbals from 2 top 100 4 star (again by ProspectsNation). Hopefully coach Cammon had a hand in getting these recruits and is bringing some good recruiting connections with him.

Just staunch the flow of Colo girls to out-of-state schools. That's what I want.....that and more dunking Brits!
That won't do it. There just isn't the WBB talent in Colorado to field a competitive PAC-12 team. Looking at both ESPN and ProspectsNation, in 2014 recruits there was 1 Colo HS girl in the top 100, likewise there is 1 for 2016 and 1 for 2017. In 2015 there were no Colo girls in the top 100. Also none projected now for 2018 or 2019. I agree the coaches should be keeping some of these players in state but the top recruits are not here. So they need to have success recruiting outside of Colorado to have the team we want to see. California is one of the states that regularly has more talent, as does Texas.

In-state talent isn't enough, but it's similar to the women as it is with the men. Tad's benefited from his in-state commitment even if more of the top players on the squad are from CA & TX.

Welcome Coach Cammon!

Agree there isn't enough talent in Colorado, but we need to keep what there is in Boulder. Those Big West ties come in handy.

So many times I have read posts lamenting the so-called failure to recruit "Colorado Girls". How about giving me some names of all those marvelous prospects that the Buffs have missed in the last 4 years. I could give you the names that have been posted over the years but they all proved to be unable to produce at the level needed for the competition of the PAC 12 and most have even failed at a lower level conferences. I admit to being swayed by a few of those girls as they seem to spur the Buffs and signed with Purdue, Texas, SMU, Denver, Seton Hall?....wherever but, alas, no pot of gold at the end of those rainbows.

I'm not sure what has happened in the last few years but it seems like the CO Preps are just not turning out high level prospects. Now maybe that will change with better AAU programs because I do believe that CO has plenty of young, talented female athletes who, maybe, just need more exposure to better competition to thrive and be prepared to compete at a BCS level. I do think a few of them would have been better served to come here but there seemed to be a driving force that was keeping them away.

I am glad to see Buffgal and BeBe acknowledging what I have long felt about the lack of talent and I do hope it changes in the future. I can tell you that I would have 'bit' on Squires from Sand Creek this year and at least 2 more in the next few years but we will see. That being said, I am quite pleased with all of the new coaches and I do feel that they will make positive moves right out of the gate. The talent is there, even though some don't think so. This team did not lose these past two years for lack of talent, they lost because of turnovers and too many personal fouls, in other words, bad coaching. Two years ago the rules on 'contact' were changed but no one told the Buffs, because they were still making the same dumb fouls, which just put the best players on the bench and allowed far too many free throws for the opposition. You can't claim to play good defense when you are making the same mistakes over and over. I trust Coach Payne will fix that and a few other things, along with the recruiting problems.

I would be screaming at either the television or computer screen about these fouls. There was no reason for them to be making the fouls and no reason the Buffs didn't get the message on the rule change had they been properly coached. I would see the previous coach screaming and picking up technical fouls when there was nothing wrong with the call under the new rules.

I also am trusting that Coach Payne will fix that and then there is this:

And there is also this:

She's a 6-5 post player from Redding, California that is a top 100 recruit.

I have always kind of admired the program at Cal and especially Cal Coach G, so the following is pretty impressive even though I know it is a "promo". I also wonder why we don't see more of this type of thing for the Buff coaches and players. After all, CU does have an award winning video department.

I like this hire because the resume shows that Coach Payne would have been incredibly familiar with Cammon's abilities and knows what he can do recruiting California. Welcome!

Coach Bill ‏@NYcoach May 13
Earlier this week @CoachJRPayne @CUBuffsWBB = lastest program to #OFFER 6'4" 2018 Versatile Stud - NY's @cosgro6

Not able to imbed the tweet but found this little bit this evening. As busy as this staff has been we are going to have to "hire more help" to keep track of this....lol! I don't know if all this recruiting will pay off but it sure is exciting to see this kind of activity when the last few years there was so little. This girl plays for the Philly Belles, which I need to find out why since she lives on Long Island.
Once again, sorry for the incomplete post and I know we should really be putting these in a seperate thread, so maybe the mods can help.

Thanks BeBe. Found more info and some video. This girl is the real deal, maybe even a future 5 star. Here is a high school game against a team from Brooklyn. Watch her operate away from the basket. That is what really impressed me.

He did and he is, BeBe.

This is a really good piece, correct on all points, IMHO - which, I'm told by my daughter is not all that humble sometimes (go figure) :) There is such a big gap in the ability to play after jumping from star status in high school to college. Remember this: every good player in college was a star in high school, so as EdB60 says, expectations are regularly not met, particularly when Susie HS Star has to compete with Sally HS Star for playing time. These things are also cyclical from state to state. Re contact: enjoy watching JR's players play the passing lanes and get steals. Her Santa Clara team was amongst national leaders in steals all season long. Recruiting is a mega key, obviously, but everyone else knew about Eleanor the Brit and CU got her. This group of coaches can recruit. They are young enough that they connect with players and good people who connect with parents. It's a great combination.

You, aik, are correct!!

Buffgal, dear friend, consider it fixed. You won't see screaming, ranting and technicals. J is not a fear based coach. She is a 'how do we fix this coach'. She was as a player and is as a coach. Ducks coach, Kelly Graves, who is one of the top coaches in the country, says of J that she is the best on the floor player coach he has ever had & has a brilliantly high basketball IQ.
One other thing: prepare to get taller. J was a 6' point guard and that's the type players they will focus on. Her two best freshmen last year were a 6' PG and a 6' off guard.

Good. Too often, people lose sight of some very basic, fundamental things. One of those basics is: in basketball, it's a big advantage to be the taller team.
