Buffs Set for New Year's Day Showdown

BOULDER – So long to 2020. Hello, 2021.

The Colorado women's basketball team kicks off the New Year with a 3 p.m. MT matchup against the Washington Huskies on Friday. The game will the first New Year's Day home game for the Buffaloes and just the third in program history.

CU (3-4, 1-3 Pac-12) had one last chance to get a W in 2020 against Arizona State before the Christmas break. Unfortunately, the game was postponed about 90 minutes before the scheduled start. The postponement meant the Buffs had to spend the break with thoughts of their 62-59 loss to No. 6 Arizona still in the back of their minds.

"I know for myself and the coaches we're all still extremely disappointed in the Arizona game," head coach JR Payne explained. "We thought we played well and we certainly had our chances to win that ballgame. That still stings a little bit. That's why the Arizona State game would have been nice just to get that sort of salty taste out of your mouth."

Colorado led Arizona for almost 33 minutes in its upset bid on Dec. 18. The Wildcats outscored CU 20-8 in the fourth quarter to complete its comeback. The Buffaloes did not do themselves any favors from the free-throw line, shooting just 3-for-12 in the final quarter.

"We played really well the last couple of games," Payne continued. We are doing a great job of executing offensively. Defensively, we're defending better in the last couple of games than we have all year. I think we feel good about who we are and how we're playing. It's just been a minute since we played. Hopefully, we'll have good practices and then continue that good feeling into Friday."

Friday will be the eighth game of the season and it seems like Payne and her staff has settled into a firm starting rotation. The Buffs have used just three starting lineups this season, with the combination of Jaylyn Sherrod, Frida Formann, Aubrey Knight, Mya Hollingshed and Peanut Tuitele getting the call over the last two games. Out of the Buffs' starts, three players (Hollingshed, Sherrod, Formann) are averaging over 10 points per game. Hollingshed is enjoying the best numbers of her career, almost averaging a double-double on the season (14.3 ppg/9.1 rpg).

As a team, Colorado has allowed 63.6 points per game. That number ranks eighth in the conference but has been on the decline. CU allowed under the average the last two games, holding Utah to just 50 points and Arizona to 62. Defensively, CU has posted numbers that put itself at the top of the nation, despite missing out on one game. Colorado still ranks 33rd in the NCAA with 35 blocks and is 32nd in the nation with 72 steals. Individually, Sherrod is 19th in the NCAA with a Pac-12 leading 20 steals, while Hollingshed is averaging almost two blocks (1.86) per game.

"I think we're defending as a team, much better than we have in a long time," Payne acknowledged. "The last couple games we've defended very well. Shots are being contested. We're rebounding really well, all those types of things."

Washington (4-3, 1-3 Pac-12) similar to Colorado, had its previous game against Oregon State postponed. The Huskies' lone Pac-12 win game on its trip to California, defeating the Golden Bears 80-53. The Huskies have two players responsible for a bulk of its scoring this season. Tameiya Sadler (14.4 ppg) and Quay Miller (10.6 ppg) have led UW in the early goings.

Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. MT. The game will be available on the Colorado Live Stream (CUBuffs.com/WatchWBB). It is also available on the TuneIn app and the Colorado Radio Network (CUBuffs.com/Listen).

CU bad
Washington worse
PAC 12 is way down overall, outside of Stanford and maybe Arizona every team has taken a leap backwards. It’s a good year to be a bad team in this conference

Correction; just Stanford

Should be happy with this one. I know UW and the P12 is down from usual, but that's an opportunity and it's great to see a good win to take advantage of the door being more open than normal.

I would like to point out there are still 4 Pac 12 teams ranked in the Top 11.. It may be a LITTLE down, but still VERY good compared to most conferences, It's also the #1 ranked conference in the country in the Massey rankings (https://www.masseyratings.com/cbw/ncaa-d1/ratings?c=1).

A little down?? Every team but one is down from a year ago; significantly. Without a question it’s the weakest pac-12 in 5 years. As I said it’s a good year to be a bad team in the conference of champions.

I don't follow WBB as closely as I do some other sports, and I don't know how closely @Buffnik does. So, my response was mainly to him and others who might not follow the sport as closely as others. I was just trying to point out-
  • For most Buff fans, at least in Allbuff-land (and also based on normal attendance and I assume TV and streaming viewership), football and men's basketball are by far the most popular sports, so are their main frames of reference. In both of those sports, the Pac 12 is not that highly regarded, and could even be said to be fighting to keep or re-capture relevance. (Pac 12 MBB is currently 6th rated in Massey this year and ended with that rating last season after being 7th at the end of the 2018/19 season, and ended up #4 in the NET ratings last season)., What I was trying to briefly point out to those interested who don't follow WBB that closely is that Pac 12 WBB is nothing like those sports.
  • For those not aware, Pac 12 WBB has been, almost every season in the last five (2017/18 being the main exception), THE premier conference per the non-prejudiced number-based ratings I can find***.
  • So, even if as you say the conference is the weakest it's been in the last 5 years, that still makes it possible it's still one of if not the top conferences in the country, so Buff WBB is not getting much if any break playing in the Pac 12 compared to playing in any other conference in the country this (wierd Covid-19 influenced) season.
(***Unfortunately, it's too early for RPI to start being announced for this season (and with the limited # of non-conference games this season RPI might not be very useful anyways), but from the 2015/16 through the 2019/20 seasons, the conference overall ended up RPI rated (in chronological order) 1st, 1st, 5th, 2nd and 1st in the country. And, as I mentioned in my earlier post, it's also the #1 rated conference so far this season in the Massey ratings (although as I just noted with RPI, with the reduced # of non-conference games that may not mean that much this year). Pac 12 WBB also ended up #1 rated in Massey in four of the last five finished seasons (It ended up #3 after the 2017/18 season).)

In something totally unrelated to the above, wanted to congratulate Ms. Hollingshed for reaching a nice points milestone! (She led the team in scoring today with 19 points while shooting an awesome 8-12 from the field.)

sloppy game for sure. Got to get better with the FTs. Sherrod looked confused with some of the defenses, but this is a game they needed to win. Now maybe they can not finish last place.

First congratulations to Mya on getting to 1000 points.

Team did not play well, but they still managed to win.

Free throw shooting was atrocious again and 3 point shooting was also horrible.

I will take the W.

I was surprised how handily Stanford took it to Arizona. Stanford is clearly the best team in the conference and they are playing all of their games on the road.

I don't follow that closely. But closely enough that I knew Stanford is dominant, but after that we're not seeing the norm of having about 6 teams with Sweet 16 or better potential and 2 or 3 teams that will finish with a losing P12 record but make a really good case for a Dance bid.

Still can't shoot from the field and can't defend the 3 point shot. They did improve on free throw shooting.

Some shoddy defense

Bad game all around for the Buffs. Standing around on defense. Looking lost on offense. Shots not falling The one positive I saw was improved free throw shooting, as Buffgal said. So much to work on.

For those not keeping up, wanted to note there's been changes to both scheduled WBB games for this weekend:
  • The game scheduled for tonight against UCLA was postponed until some later (unannounced) date and
  • it was just announced the game against USC scheduled for Sunday has been moved to Monday. Scheduled tipoff time is 1:00.

I'll probably wait until Sunday to post a USC game thread.
