This could be a tough first test.

ABOUT NORTH DAKOTA: North Dakota was 22-10 in 2013-14 sharing the Big Sky Conference regular season title with Southern Utah. UND won the Big Sky Tournament to advance to its first NCAA Division I Tournament.

North Dakota has four starters returning including sophomore forward Mia Loyd who led the team in rebounding as a freshman at 9.0 per game and was the second leading scorer at 13.6 points per outing. UND was picked to repeat its title according to the Big Sky Preseason Coaches Poll. North Dakota won a pair of exhibition games, 79-42 against Bemidji (Minn.) State and 70-50 over Minnesota-Crookston. Senior center Emily Evers led North Dakota during the exhibition schedule averaging 19.0 points and 12.5 rebounds over the two contests.

Travis Brewster is in his third year as head coach of North Dakota with a record of 33-28. The 2014 Big Sky Coach of the Year, Brewster begins his 12th overall season with the UND program.

THE SERIES: This will be the second meeting between Colorado and North Dakota. The Buffaloes won the previous meeting a 67-56 decision on Jan. 4, 2011, at the Coors Events Center.

Starting 5 for the Buffs expected to be: Lexy Kresl, Bri Watts, Jasmine Sborov, Haley Smith, Jamee Swan. Lappe's likely to play a deep bench, though.
 
Down 4-11 in the first 5 minutes. Team looks flat footed tonight. Tons of turnovers. Awful defense. Fouling a lot after getting beat to the spot.

Linda needs to crack the whip here and get them into the game.

Buffs starting to play better defense and to keep ND off the offensive glass. Still look completely disjointed on the offensive end.

Reese with 6 points and Huggins hit a trey for the other points.
 
Tied at 13 after a couple baseline jumpers from Haley Smith. She looks the part. Could develop into a very impressive player. Good athlete.
 
Finally some great ball movement on offense and it leads to a Huggins trey for a 29-28 CU lead at 3 minutes.
 
31-34 at the half

North Dakota has a huge center that is giving the Buffs all sorts of problems. She's not quick and can't jump, but she's strong, has a soft touch and plays smart. Got to figure something out with her.

Playing better. Not shooting well.

Challenges on the interior with Beard-Fails fouling out in only about 6 minutes of court time coupled with Bri Watts rolling her ankle in the 1st half and being out.

Not for a week. They play Monday at 7 PM here in round 2 of the pre-season WNIT. That is why I came to Colorado now. Two basketball games and a volleyball match in one long weekend!

Jamee Swan played extremely well and does so much stuff that does not appear in the stat line. When they double teamed the big girl from North Dakota, CU was very effective. She was touch one on one. We need height. Bri was doing pretty good against her until she got hurt.

Our bench is not deep and this will kill us in the Pac 12.
 
Some fans were asking what about the men's game on Monday. They will have time to clear the keg before time for the fans to enter the arena.

What happened to Bri?

Oh, and I would love to hear your recap and analysis of the game.
 
The Bri injury was weird. It was as the play was over. She was standing in the lane, took a step, her ankle rolled and she went down.
 
My take: that und girl was laaarge. Jamee is no slouch and couldn't move her off anything. Props to the coaching staff for halftime adjustments on both ends. After the break a bunch of assisted layups on cuts, and mostly the big girl was less effective.
Bri was doing great, and will be a real asset. The injury was to her ankle, after getting tangled up with that same big. Hopefully she's ready to go again soon.
Lexy also got her ankle taped up pretty good, and was in noticeable pain, but played through. She wasn't as comfortable at point as I'd hoped. But Brecca is going to get a ton of minutes. She's fast, great ball handler. Freshman choices, but a great spark.
Jen and Jamee were beasts. They'll combine for 30 every night. Jamee stared somebody down after every basket, I was cracking up.
Guard defense was great, post defense gave up a lot. But won't run in to a body like that very often.
Alina, the German freshman, got in some pretty quality minutes. Hit a 3, which like Huggins, is a nice threat coming from a 6' plus.
Biggest issues were turnovers and fouls. Beard-Fails couldn't adjust to what refs were calling and fouled out way early.
Overall impression is that there's a lot to clean up, but a lot of fight and a lot of unselfish play
 
I think at the end of the year this will be one we'll look back on as a great resume win. I expect North Dakota to win 20+ games.
 
Last night I had no brain left when I got back to my room. After an excellent night's sleep, I feel human again.

#23 for ND was a very large girl, both tall and wide. She never took a shot from more then maybe 4 ft from the basket. She isn't particularly fast and was usually the last one down the court on defense. Some of that may have been due to altitude. Bri was the recipient of a question foul call for #4 and then made a stupid foul to go to the bench.

Kresl was wincing on the court. Tough kid. Tape me up, I'm going back in. Brecca definitely made some freshmen mistakes, but she is fast and a quick learner. Very personable young lady also. She's still learning and this was her first collegiate game.

Jamee played very poised. We all know that she can play out of control. She did her best against the big girl and did make her work hard for the most part. However, the big girl was taller than Jamee and if she got in position, could put the ball in the hoop. Jamee's shooting has improved since last year.

Jen was a beast on offense. She has the close in shot that was there in the first half and then the 10 ft jumper in the second half when they had her out farther on offense.

You can tell when Huggins releases the ball if it is going in or not! Love the look on her face when it swishes.

Refs were not calling it both ways IMO, but the players have to adjust. We need to shoot a better FT percentage.

Not bad for a first game, but still lots to work on.
 
I do give coaching staff credit for halftime adjustments. Assistant coaches have been quiet on the bench in previous years. Lots of activity from them. Some in the face coaching at the posts before coaches huddled at timeouts. Love it.

North Dakota's #23 is Emily Evers who wasn't a starter last season, but won a 6th man award. She's listed at 6-5 and obviously has a wide body which she apparently used to her advantage. Glad to read CU made adjustments at the half which enabled them to defend her better.

The Buffs seem to have some of the same issues which hurt them last season, turnovers, missed free throws and alarmingly, the inability to hold and perhaps build on a double-digit lead. They have to develop a killer instinct and put the game out of reach in the last five minutes when they have the opportunity kill the game off.

WKU looks to be a very different and perhaps significantly better animal than UND. They are much more than UND athletic and have an AA candidate in senior Chastity Gooch who is the two time Sun Belt defensive POY. Like UND they are favored to win their conference and thus make the NCAA field. This really looks like it's going to be a heck of a test for the Buffs. They need to stay away from silly fouls and watch it with the TOs so that they don't give away too many easy baskets.
 
I agree that Western Kentucky will be a much tougher test than North Dakota. When I used to attend the DU games, I would see them. That was before DU changed conferences.

Short turn around time for a game so early in the season also and a lot of adjustments need to be made.
 
On the flip side of the short turnaround time (for both teams), is altitude and travel which are both in the Buffs favor.

Still, CU cannot get their top five in foul trouble and can't commit silly turnovers. I believe they'll be okay in the rebounding department. My guess is that to put themselves into a position to win they'll need to cut down on errors and play solid defense.

Hope Bri Watts can play, she seemed to be having a solid game before the injury.
