Doesn't seem like a death penalty.
Some of the penalties — effective immediately — in this case include:

  • Two years of probation.
  • A fine.
  • A reduction of 46 total official visits for the football program during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic years.
  • A prohibition against unofficial visits in football from Sept. 1 through Oct. 12, 2022.
  • A prohibition against all recruiting communications in football for four weeks during the 2022-23 academic year.
  • A reduction in evaluation days for football by 10 during spring 2022 and by 34 during fall 2022.
  • A reduction of the football squad size by 10 for four years, starting with the 2022-23 academic year.
  • Show-cause orders for the individuals who have agreed to their violations and penalties.

Standards, a cut above, service, blah, blah, blah. Who knew minivan Calhoun would cut corners?

Just heard some details.

Air Force states that they self-reported and fully cooperated with the investigation.

Calhoun is said to have not been involved and not aware of the infractions as they were going on.

The assistant coaches who were involved have all left the program, one of those coaches went to Wisconsin where he recently resigned.

The penalties are really pretty minimal. The biggest impact is in the number of official paid visits. They talk about a reduction in roster size but that really isn't as big as it would be anywhere else. They have to designate a certain number of players as official roster players. These would be the scholarship players anywhere else. They have always had a significantly higher number of players who are considered the equivalent of walk-ons but of course at the academy no cadets pay tuition or living expenses and all get a paycheck.

The big difference comes in how many players can participate in off-season team activities.

the reduction in football squad size might be the biggest penalty for a team like theirs.
It actually will have very little impact on squad size. It will just mean that more players are considered walk-ons putting some limits on them in terms of off-season team activities.

The biggest impact may actually be in the reduction of official visits. The academy tends to bring in a lot of guys for visits who are on the edges of being signed by bigger programs. Sometimes the official visit changes their minds and they decide to go to the academy. More often the count on getting a number of those kids who had conditional offers that didn't come through.

the penalty wasn't scholarship limits. it is literally "squad size" - so yeah "walk ons" count against squad size.

so they can't have more "walk ons," and yes, that will hurt them more than most schools.

Maybe the new norm in today's NIL world. Limit the size of rosters as a consequence. And fewer waterboys...that will teach 'em!

State of CFB in Colorado is that two of the programs are in a dead heat for worst FBS team at all, and are both likely the worst P5 and G5 teams, respectively, and the other is getting sanctioned?

Sheesh.

At the academies, every student has to play on an organized sports team - could be football, could be the fencing club, but they really don’t have cuts (but may not make the travel squad). But in the case of football, they also have JV and Sprint squads.
