On the wide receivers - “Yep, that’s the one (that is playing well, sophomore Paul Richardson). Toney Clemons is dropping too many passes. We got guys running wrong routes, guys can’t compete for balls in traffic. Guess what? You are not going to be open when you catch the ball. You have to catch the ball in traffic. Can’t catch in traffic? Can’t play. So we’ll find someone or we’ll just play with one.”

It's refreshing to have a coach that tells it like it is. On the other hand, the receiver situation is a little concerning. Although, I have a feeling Embree might be exaggerating a little bit for motivational purposes.
 
so no more WR groupings? Does everyone still get orange slices and juice boxes after practices?
 
I hope this is a motivational ploy. Playing one WR works fine when you're running the triple option. The offense we're running demands at least two WR's. I hope Clemons gets it together. My man-crush on PRich is well documented, but he'll have a much harder time producing if there isn't somebody to even out the coverage.
 
Have really liked the interviews so far. I think there is a disservice done to any individual in any environment if feedback is not presented directly, good or bad. Think if a boss came up in a workplace and told you you were being fired, because you had not been doing your job. Well, if that was the first you had heard of it, there would be reason to be incredibly hacked off. However if in the months or weeks leading up to that conversation you were being told that you needed to up your game, well then, too bad for you for not responding to the challenge. I think the change of regimes has brought that reality to light. The seniors that are still around have probably figured it out already, but for some of the second/third year guys there is a big change from sliding by from one enthusiastic pep talk to the next, to having direct, honest feedback on the end of each play/practice (aka coaching).
Now, not only does the player himself know it, but the team will know who is getting the job done, and who isn't... Who has their back going into a game, and who still needs to step up.

Maybe for the players this was already clear in Spring ball, but it is great as a fan to see the approach on open display to the public as well.

Not sure how much of it is gamesmanship for Embree. The impression I get is that if he doesn't feel that a player has potential they aren't on the roster for camp, so you made it to camp and you have the OPPORTUNITY to show your coaches and teammates that you have earned the right to wear the Black and Gold on Saturday. That is as far as potential gets you. If there isn't delivery on that potential he will find other players to fill out the gameday roster. To me, as an outsider, that is what not entrusting the rich tradition of the Colorado Buffaloes to the timid or the weak looks like, when put into action.

That may take a chunk out of our win/loss record this season, even to the pain of our fans in the first three games. I for one, will endure a bit more pain if it yields results in the years to come.

I think Embree first showed us this attitude back in the spring when gave the "work hard or get out" ultimatum. He's already proven that he'll talk the talk and walk the walk and I think that it time, the whole team will pick it up as well. Maybe I'm just out of calibration from too much time listening to Zen crap but this seems like a guy who knows what he wants and that he WILL get it out of his players.
 
Set a standard for the level of effort and performance expected, and then hold the players accountable. Very simple, direct, and effective method, imo.

Good post.

I just wonder why he does this in front of the media. I think this should be a locker room deal. It shouldn't be played out in the papers for everyone to read.

I'm not trying to make this into a big deal though. I'm sure Embo and Scooter know what they're doing.

Most years I would agree, but I think it is just fine when trying to drive the cultural change that is needed for the program. For the players it shows that there won't be any hiding the good or the bad, Embree (presumably) is making a point of telling it like it is to the players, and by not hiding the deficiencies from the media and fans, he is showing the guys a level of consistency that hasn't been around recently.
As a bonus, some of the message will hopefully reach the masses, and educate the fans as to what is being expected of the players this season. The last thing the students on the field need is a home crowd to turn on them if they are playing their tails off and still end up pulling a L against some of the tough competition coming to Boulder this year.

I think the point is that when it comes down to kickoff, game 1, if you're on the field, you know you are supposed to be there, your team mates know you should there, and we know you should be there. All this criticism is based on the assumption of improvement. If you weather the storm, and you get the blessing, your confidence is internal not external. Therefore, you can play your own game, independent of the other teams skill set.
 
He's just trying to find out how these guys are going to respond. The core of Halkins' philosophy was that everything had to be positive 100% of the time. A lot of guys are having to get used to a very different approach. Embo's very willing to challenge guys, tell them they suck, etc. If a player responds by fighting harder and responding better to coaching, Embo knows he's got a player he can build with.

I like this method of Coaching. Nik, you ****ing suck. You are always gone when the big recruiting news hits, you rarely post scoop, and quite frankly, your analysis is lacking. The season is coming soon, I know, and so is the big recruiting season soon after. However, you know what, this site demands quality from its recruiting mods. You have to be accountable. If we have to go into the season with just BB, well, we will moderate with just one recruiting mod. Until you step up and show consistency, we just can't depend on you. If we can't depend on you in traffic, you don't mod. It is as simple as that.

****ing awesome post. Rep. If anyone can make a shirt, or just a picture I can get printed on a shirt, that shows a two tight-end lineup with a fullback as a mic and the tight-ends as turntables, I will rep often and buy much beer for.

Also, I like seeing tight things treated like turn-tables.

Agreed. I will rep here also. Embree putting all criticisms out there in public makes me think he will also publicly admit blame himself when he ****s up. It will be a nice change. Let's just hope he doesn't **** up much. I don't like blame takers if they do it too much because it means we are losing.

There's nothing wrong with getting in someone's face and being upfront with players. There is nothing wrong with that. I actually prefer this type of coaching. I just disagree with Embo dishing this to Kyle Ringo and friends. :smile2:

But I do see what @5345 is saying. Embo is trying to change a culture, so maybe being a bit extreme is what is needed here.

Embree should just snatch his son away from UCLA. He's already graduated so he'd be eligible to play this season.
