What grade do you give Boyle for the season?

The Buffs were more talented than last year, but we lacked leadership from the seniors and consistent scoring.

We saw the potential of the team in moments (CSU, at Zona, Zona, Stanford, Oregon, etc) but never for a full game. Both Zona/Oregon/Stanford at home are the closest though.

Lots of youth at every position, and we competed in every game except the Kansas one.

I give Boyle an A- because he took an undersized team with ZERO consistent depth and no bigs on the bench to relieve Roberson/XJ to the tourney as a 10 seed. Very impressive coaching job.

Next year will be even better with or without Roberson. We return at least 4 starters, and we will have 5 guys off the bench that will actually contribute in a positive direction.

Took a team with just one senior to the NCAA's again. He brought in two Top 100 guys who contributed immediately. Built a great non-conference schedule. Raised the expectations of the fan base. We started 1-4 in conference, and had them bounced back. Finally learned to win on the road. All while losing something around 40% of scoring from last year.

We simply have never had a basketball coach do this.

I give him an A for all the reasons you mentioned. Had we beat Illinois (which I think WAS a possibility), he'd've gotten an A+.
 
A-. I think very few people on the board predicted we would have the success we had this season. The teams I watched yesterday in the tournament were all better and more athletic than us. It was a success just getting this team to the tournament, in my opinion.

There was, however, some way to get our offensive game going - the good offensive game that comes to mind is the game at UA. I'm not smart enough basketball wise to figure out what was missing during our frequent scoring droughts, but Tad is and should have. That is the reason for the (-).
 
A-. I put the minus mainly because of the pathetic defense I saw in the first half of the game against Illinois. In reality, I would just fine giving him an A. Much better season than I expected.

can't put him higher with losses to Utah and Washington State (and Arizona State @home)
 
He also capped another great recruiting year by signing Hopkins, Fletcher and Thomas.
 
A- feels about right. He significantly beat expectations on the floor and the recruiting trail, but there were some seriously cringe-worthy moments.
 
First of all, not a complaint in the world about our program, I love Tad and what he has done is amazing. As for this year, I think he did a damn good job for how young of a team he had. Anytime you outcoach expectations, you are immediately in the B and above range and he was a bit better than just exceeding expectations. That puts me in the A- to B+ area. UofW, Utah and Oregon St were the games that brought it down from an A or A+. Especially losing to OSU at home.

I was not impressed with his game coaching and he recruited too many freshmen PG's that had the same skill set.

I was impressed with how simple he kept it for the freshmen and how well he taught defensive schemes.

A B for taking a extremely young team to the tournament and winning the Charleston Classic? Wow...

I agree it is harsh. I was probably too harsh on his in-game coaching. As far as not having a bench... In many ways I include that in taking too many freshmen PG's. I wanted to see at least one transfer come in. The lack of a bench was somewhat self-imposed on Tad's part.
 
The Stalzer Talton signings are going to be a polarizing topic for the next few years.

As for game coaching, we have bounced back after half time adjustments this year. We dont always win after a bad first half, but the last Arizona game and Illinois game are examples that he can get the team back on track.
 
That's like asking what grade you would give Ditka, hurricane or otherwise.

Would you grade the Grand Canyon or the Tetons? Would you grade the heavens and the far off constellations of outer space? No, you just sit in stunned appreciation. There is but one Tad, may his name be praised.

He was an A+ defensive coach, a B- offensive coach and gets an A+ for being a recruiter with Scott and Johnson being special to follow up Roberson and Dinwiddie/Booker
 
B. Boyle needs to do a better job coaching (or recruiting more shooters) offense in the half court. Too many times this year we were in the 40's and 50's for points.
 
I find it interesting that a lot of people who are giving Tad high A's for the season also had us projected to either win the Pac-12 or be in the top 3.
 
I give him an A+ Think about it. He took a team that had no senior talent from the Bezdelick era and made the NCAA as an at large team (clear sign of national recognition). In spite of the relatively low reputation of CU as a basketball school, he recruited some gems who were overlooked by other, more prominent programs. Then he developed them into quality players who could compete effectively as underclassmen. Overall, especially in most cases in Pack 12 games, CU had less available talent/experience on the hoof than their opponents. Yet they competed and had a winning record in conference and only lost two games outside of conference in the regular season.

He invested the the PROGRAM by redshirting probably the 3rd and 4th best 2012 freshman recruits, knowing, I am sure, that the team could use them right away, but opting instead to build power for the future. He has instilled values among the team that have resulted in great focus on their goals (on and off the court) and great chemistry among them.

I am an old guy who has been a college basketball fan for over 50 years ... and a season ticket holder at CU for over 30 years. Boyle is head and shoulders the best coach the CU has ever had in the time that I have observed them ... and on a par with the best in the country today. He is a great coach ... and more importantly a principled leader of young men. We are lucky to have him here. Just watch and enjoy the ride.
 
If we seperated out the grades. I would give Boyle an A+ for defense and a B- for offense. Our defense has kept us in every game this year except one, and if we didn't lose Dinwiddie in the beginning of that game, I doubt Kansas would have beat us by 36 points.

Our offense has been a problem the last two years. If we had a little better offensive performance, we might have won another 2-5 games this year alone.

I'm not sure if it's just youth, talent, experience or system. I think it is a combination of all those things. I believe we should be scoring at a higher average at home with our altitude advantage. I felt we didn't really exploit that this year as much as we could. We saw glimpses of it with some trapping defense, but not enough IMO.

I hope next year Boyle really opens up the offense, and we start running and trapping teams at home, make the tempo really high and just wear teams out.

I think it is unacceptable we lost three games at home this year. We should never lose more than one game with our altitude advantage and crowd support.

+1. For the better part of the last 30 years, you could've taped a $100 bill to the back of a CU basketball game ticket and nobody would've taken it off your hand. Tad is an absolute godsend.

I was looking at the season prediction thread last night...my expectations may have been just a bit too high :lol:
 
A-

I give an A for recruiting this year and an A for getting a young team to play well early. But the missed opportunities that kept the Buffs from gaining a bye in the Pac-12 tourney and from getting a better tourney seed when both were there for the taking keeps the season from being an A. Exceeded pre-season expectations but fell a bit short of the revised in-season potential.

In hindsight, this was also a year when we should have targeted a JUCO or senior transfer guard to give us an additional vet ball handler instead of signing 6 freshmen. We had 2 sophs and not a lot behind them.
