What I observed yesterday.

I avoided posting right after the game - too emotional and "hot-headed".

This is what I saw while at the game - no benefit of television or replay.

1. Tony Jones has no running back instincts. Does not cut up into a hole or make things happen. One play really sticks out early in the game. The run is designed to go outside but it is defended on the outside, he runs right into the defense for no gain - there was a opening for him to cut it up inside for a couple of yards but he just ran it as it was drawn. It will not cut it at this level. A top RB has to be a priority.

2. Jordan Webb was very disappointing. Even when he had time his throws were usually low or behind the receivers - a lot of times they made the catch but there is little opportunity to get yards after catch when the receiver has to go to the ground to catch the ball. Hitting a receiver in stride would once would of been nice to see. If he is the most accurate and best decision maker then the Buffs are in trouble. If he does not play any better then it is time to give someone else a chance.

3. Do not know what was wrong with the Oline but that was pathetic - they did not pick up the blitz at all in the second half. Bubble screen, Tight end on a hook, anything....

4. I thought the 4th and 1 play call was atrocious (big surprise). I also thought the execution was horrible - that is maybe one instance that you do force a little bit - give your receiver a chance to make a play. If you are going for it in that situation you better have a running play that will get you 2 yards. I desperately wanted the coaches to come up with an adjustment or play that would burn the blitz.

5. The Dline played pretty well. The defense had a couple of breakdowns and unfortunately in a tight game that hurts you.

6. Mental toughness - none existent. Same reason we cannot win on the road - After the muffed punt the team just fell apart, you could tangibly feel it. Should of saw this coming, small senior class, too much left from the Hawkins era, but I was hoping the culture was changing. This team still does not expect to win.

7. Overall nothing to get excited about in a program that has not generated much excitement for a long time. The offense was pathetic, just horrible.

I am not calling for any coaches head (after the game I wanted everyone's head) - but this loss hurts the rebuilding process and there is not getting around that. Embree and staff have to show improvement over the rest of the season or it is going to be ugly.

Footnote: I hate games at the Broncos stadium...
Some hard decisions are going to have to be made by this staff but players that are not contributing and do not show signs of contributing over the course of the season need to be let go (this especially applies to Junior and Sophomores). I know this will be unpopular but if CU is this devoid of talent they need open slots for some talent.

Great post but I don't agree on the def line. The ends were impressive but the interior of the line just played really poorly. No push to get to the qb and allowed blockers to get to the second level.

Agreed, very good post. The sky is not falling...yet. Yesterday was a punch to the gut and if Embree has another 3 or less win season this year and next, it will be hard to justify his continued employment at CU.

I still think EB's play calling is a liability and wouldn't mind him checking out along with marshall

We need the best OL coach money can buy. Today. Now. Hookers and blow, whatever it takes.

Solid post. The mental toughness part is extremely disturbing considering this was a MWC bottom feeder with a 9-27 collective record the past 3 seasons. To let a little adversity cause us to completely cave against an opponent of such a pathetically low caliber is beyond troubling. I can understand it when facing a Pac-12 opponent that has been bowling the last few years, but against CSU? Wow. They don't panic when down 11, yet we panic when they cut our lead to 5. Just pathetically sad, and it could certainly happen again against Sac State next week
