What if the OL ends up being good this year?

We have gotten so accustomed to poor OL play around here that it's hard to picture the team being good up front.

But let's say it comes together. Last season, I think that Lindgren showed that he could call plays in a way that covered some issues. Low number of sacks allowed and TFLs despite starting a true frosh at both QB and RB much of the year. The OL wasn't as good as the numbers indicated, but they continued to improve and build confidence as the year progressed.

3 starters return.

Harris and Handler get replaced by Wiefels and Callahan as newcomers along with Irwin coming back from injury and all the guys who redshirted last year being eligible on game day (Kronshage, Huckins, Kough and Sutton).

Lots more depth and a lot of guys got a lot bigger/stronger in the offseason. 2nd year in the system.

So what if we see more than incremental growth and actually see an OL that picks up stunts, wins the line of scrimmage, keeps Sefo clean, and actually gets to the 2nd level to engage LBs and DBs on screens and runs?

Would the offense rise to the level of the Klatt teams? Better, since there is more speed than those groups had?

I know we're only a few days into camp, but I'm getting a feeling that this OL is going to surprise this year and make things happen for the 2014 Buffs.

Seriously. Please don't get my hopes up. I'm not sure I can handle any more disappointment from CU football.

I sure hope the oline is better than advertised, but I'm hard pressed to think that will be true until later in the season (when these guys have had time to play together).

Edit to OP... Callahan just declared eligible to play this year! :woot:

We have some pieces there now, gotta do it on the field. Feel much better though, the Ncaa didn't step on their deck for once.

Imagine what Sefo could do with a decent pocket. The team may have lost a big weapon in PRich, but being able to have steady qb play could offset some of that.

"What if the OL actually ends up being good?"

We're going to a bowl game.

I don't know that the OL will actually be good, but if it is, I think this team will go bowling.

I expect "average" or maybe even "competent," and 3 to 5 wins.

If the OL is actually good, well, to coin a phrase: OH YEAH!

Comments about Nembot from teammates quite interesting. "He is a huge physical force. So strong. A beast!"

Teammates.

Here's hoping Nembot is going to breakthrough in 2014! This along with other developments mentioned recently makes our OL very intriguing.

Freaking awesome news about Callahan. If our o-line is good, I think we see a really interesting jump forward in offensive strategy this year. Being able to convert red zone and third down opportunities is made easier when you can open the play book.

It might maybe possibly almost perhaps be enough to get us close to bowl eligible. Maybe.

Not sure this is a klatt era offense quite yet. Not that they were super special, but we had better overall depth, experience, and raw talent around klatt than sefo right now, IMHO.

Yesterday many of us hoped to back into a bowl game with 6 wins... now I think not going to a bowl would be a big disappointment. Shane Callahan vastly improves the LT position, the interior of the line was already pretty deep and we have a massively physical RT who may finally put it all together and if he doesn't then we have 3 guys behind him who could step in and probably be average at worst.

Hate to be a wet blanket, but it's still pretty tough to find six wins on this schedule. We certainly won't be favored in six games.

No, we won't. However it gives us a better shot. Its a long time between now and november. We are in a better position to hit 6 wins now than we were yesterday.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, we still aren't looking at a great offensive line or maybe even an average PAC 12 offensive line.

What we are looking at though is the possibility of having a competent offensive line that isn't one twisted ankle away from being a lousy line like we have had the past few years.

We still have a lot of question marks including who is going to stretch the field at the WR position to compliment Spruce, can we get any kind of production out of the TE spot (any production would be more than we had last year,) and can Adkins step up and be a factor at RB and can Powell stay healthy enough to be a compliment and power guy.

With all that even having a competent OL could make a huge difference. Sefo having enough confidence to wait in the pocket for patterns to open up, the RBs not having to dodge tacklers before they even hit the LOS, some openings allowing some big plays to develop can go a long way to giving an offense a chance for success.

Our defense should be much improved as well this year but at this point we look to be razor thin and undersized at a number of positions. An offense that can control the ball for more time, sustain some drives, and impact field position even when they don't score could be a huge help to the defense, this all starts with the offensive line.

I'm not in the bowl game or bust camp yet. I am looking forward to us being more competitive this year, 4-5 wins and being more competitive in most of our losses would be a good season.

I'd say it gives us a chance at a bowl game and makes 5 wins a very realistic target. I'm stoked about Callahan but there's still way too many unknowns on that line to make a bowl game likely. Depth is undoubtedly better though, so if Nembot decides to play Right Turnstile or Crabb's back gives out we should have someone ready to step up.

I'm ecstatic that Callahan is eligible but six wins or bust is something we shouldn't be expecting this year. You are only setting yourself up for disappointment. CU football - expect the worst, hope for the best.

Do you mean Lindgren? or was the S&C coach calling plays?

Dear God.

Dear God.

It is august. Give the fans some hope. Skins in particular hasn't suffered the way we long timers have suffered and thus he still hasn't had his innate belief in improvement beaten out of him by years of abuse and failed expectations.

I am all for enjoying the latest news, but disappointed if we do not make a bowl game this year? Come on. 2015 is the breakout year.

Guys, I started this thread before the Callahan news. I have a feeling that the OL was going to be better than expected. How much better, I have no idea.

I'm just floating a hypothetical here.

If (and it's a big "if" right now) our OL is a team strength and is consistently good, how good is this offense?

I certainly don't intend to start a bunch of nonsense about putting expectations on this team. It's one thing to start thinking about upside. That's the hopeful part that makes August fun. But those upsides shouldn't turn into expectations that would leave disappointment if not reached.
