What to expect from Sefo Liufau?

Look, I wanted Davis Webb because I'd like Sefo to finally redshirt and rehab his injured foot. A lot of people are dogging Sefo and saying we'll be lucky to win 4 games where 6 or more wins were being predicted with Webb... We're really overlooking Sefo IMO.

He's not injury prone, he's suffered one major injury that I'm aware of. He had a record breaking season in 2014 but didn't repeat it in 2015. Keep in mind he lost two 5th year seniors and his starting LT was injured. He's got prototypical size, off the charts intangibles and he's a born leader. Having him start after a very short offseason would be less than ideal, but the fact is, he's a legitimate P5 starter. I don't see how your could argue against that, he threw 28 TDs in the Pac-12 in 2014, and completed over 65% of his passes for 3,200 yards. Even in 2015 he was far from bad.

Get well soon, Sefo, we're counting on you.

I hope he's healthy and more experienced than the guy who put up 28 points per game in '14. I don't want to see the guy who played poorly behind that patchwork line last season.

Please don't accuse me of saying he was great two years ago. He was better than last year, though, and I hope he's learned some things in the past two years.

I think Sefo is a great Buff and a great young man. I certainly wish him well and want him to be uber successful. But until the games aren't close and put in his hands to win or lose, I refuse to have any hope for a bowl game this season...and there is little reason for me to believe this season will be much different than last season. I was done with Sefo after the pick 6 against Utah...like I was done with Mac after Hawaii.

"Off the charts intangibles"? What?

Terrible clock management, absolutely no situational awareness, throws picks at the worst time, and can never seem to make the play that helps lead his team to victory. His intangibles are his biggest weakness IMO.

I can at least understand where you are coming from here.

The OP had 2015 as "far from bad" and praises "off the charts" intangibles. Huh?

Probably talking about his toughness, his maturity, and how he always steps up and holds himself accountable in pressers while never throwing a teammate under the bus.

There are a lot of things to respect about Sefo. Whatever anyone thinks of his play at QB, dude is definitely a great Buff and fine young man.

Yeah, I was talking about his intangibles... Who the hell assumes that to mean anything other than his toughness and maturity and how good a teammate he is?

Great Buff, and I agree that when it comes to off the field stuff, you couldn't ask for much more in your QB.

Who the hell assumes you might be talking about some other intangibles that help to win games? Seriously?

Sefo is a great kid. I don't think anyone would argue that fact. But there are a lot of great kids. That doesn't win you football games. I've sat in the stands for 3 years and defended Sefo to other Buffs fans and non Buffs fans but it comes to a point where he hasn't given me much ammo to defend him with anymore. Fact is in the PAC 12 you need a great QB and we don't have one of those. Webb was our ticket out of the PAC 12 basement. Unless Montez can step up and play now (which I don't think he's ready yet) it will be another 4 win at best year. Rick George will probably fire Mac before the end of the year to be first in on Tom Herman. Now I hope I'm wrong and Sefo can prove to be a clutch player and not miss wide open receivers over and over and lead the Buffs to a 7 or more win season. I like Sefo, I like Mac but neither will be around next season.

He was not great two years ago, but he was vastly improved over his freshman season. He was progressing two years ago, quite significantly, and there were signs that he could be a legit Pac-12 QB. Then last season was a big time regression; a bad enough step(s) backward to justify absolute skepticism for this year or next.

2015 Stats, 10.75 Games

Passing: 344 atts, 214 comp (62%), 2418 Yards, 9 TD's, 6 Ints
Rushing: 108 atts, 260 Yards, 5 TD's, 2 Fumbles

All Purpose: 2678 Yards, 14 TD's 8 TO's

2014 Stats, 12 Games
Passing: 498 atts, 325 comp (65%) 3200 Yards, 28 TD's, 15 Ints
Rushing: 69 atts, 136 Yards, 0 TD's, 3 Fumbles

All Purpose: 3336 Yards, 28 TD's, 18 TO's

I am not sure what happened to our offensive coordinator in the offseason of 2014-2015, but it is apparent he altered the scheme. We were not throwing nearly as much and Sefo was asked/allowed to run more. The only real difference in offensive personnel was on the OL, no excuse to see that big a drop in passing atts and yardage. Obviously Sefo took care of the ball more in 2015 than he did in 2014, which may have led to a few more runs instead of passes because he would pull it down and run instead of force the throw, but still doesn't make up the difference.

Sefo is very capable of putting up huge numbers, if he has a competent OL.

My questions going into fall camp

1) Will Chev truly bring back the high flying air raid style offense that broke records in 2014?
2) Will the OL be able to give Sefo time to read and throw, or will the new offense rely on quick passes which will somewhat negate poor OL play?
3) Will Sefo's foot heal to the point he can run the read option at times like he did in 2015?
4) Can Sefo put together the passing ability he showed in 2014, with the care for the football he displayed in 2015?

I don't know Sefo personally so I won't comment on the much-heralded greatness of his personality, character, etc., but I will point out that, IMO, redshirting him is about the worst possible thing for the program to do with him. He isn't a good college QB. It is what it is.

Well, he's all we got, too.

Hopefully we can better count on our OL not to lead the conference in sacks allowed for the 2nd year in a row. That would be a good start.

We also did better with the greater number of passing attempts so maybe we should get back to that. Hopefully "Oops", "Oops, and "Oops" will catch the damn ball for a change. And hopefully the JC guy coming in is a rock.

Lastly, I hope his designation as an upperclassman brings maturity and some wiseness.

I think there are too many unknowns with the offense to accurately predict what kind of player Sefo will be this year. Aside from some intangible differences from 2015 to 2016, there are different passing concepts, different OL, different WRs, etc. As a die hard Buff fan, I can only be optimistic that these changes will have a positive effect on how well he plays.

I understand not expecting a ton out of him, but I don't think we have to expect him to light the world on fire in order for us to have a relatively successful season.

Our defense is our strength. Our offense needs to stop going 3 and out, committing stupid mistakes at the worst times, and settling for FGs in the redzone. Last year, we hoped we had a solid WR group, that didn't exactly pan out for a variety of reasons. Huntley could easily play right away, and Winfree has what appears to be realistic goals of making the NFL. They can potentially be major difference makers with their height in the redzone as well as the fact that they are HR threats. Not sure what to expect out of the running game, but if there is a lot of space, I think we have some RBs who could really abuse some defenses. Mostly, I don't think we will be banging our heads against the wall about the playcalling, I fully believe Chev will clean that **** up.

There's a lot of question marks still, the OL, Sefo's health, depth. But we've had a ton of questions over the last couple seasons and have steadily become more competitive in pac12 games. I believe we can still turn the corner, but I understand the fans who don't believe, HCMM hasn't earned it yet. I will be surprised if we only win 4 games.

Keep on cherry picking stats and you can talk yourself into anything.
The biggest thing people fail to mention is his record and lack of consistency and not being able to not home in on a target and his key turnovers and his horrendous starts to games or horrendous stretches when they have a lead, etc, etc
