What's the deal with new CU Players begging for twitter followers?

In the past week I have been seeing what seems like every new CU football early enrolee soliciting people to follow them on Twitter and Instagram. I don't remember ever seeing this before. I really don't have all that much interest in what most of them would say on Twitter or the 'gram. My supposition is that it all has to do with NIL, and that they are trying to get a lot of followers so they can say "hey, look, I have 2,000 followers, pay me to tweet something about your business." Then again, maybe it is just vanity. If it really helps them with NIL, then it is an easy way to pitch in, I guess, although I doubt its actually utility to the players. If it really helps all that much, maybe we should all create a bunch of burner accounts and repeatedly follow all the players to inflate their numbers.

Here is the latest one I have seen.

They can make money straight off social media if they have lots of followers.

It is a hands off way for CU to have their players make $$$
I think this is the deal.

I follow several climbers and mountaineers on SM who promote themselves a lot for just that reason -- the number of SM followers directly correlates to an athlete's ability to attract sponsorship.

Rice has 58K. One, maybe two, sponsorships monetized. Clothes. Light money, maybe only free swag.

If CU is guiding this - or a company hired by CU - it’s a waste.

How many have 10-20k minimum, verified?
CU is playing within the rules. I assume they are doing other things like helping players with brand creation/management, coordinating with NIL opportunities, etc, but no, they are never going to start a slush fund to pay every player $50k+/year and call it "sponsorships" like Texas and others.

I suppose I could make a Twitter account just for this? Because frankly, I don't want my everyday Twitter account clogged up with stuff I don't care to read.

Ditto Instagram? I hate both platforms just because there's just troves of **** I don't care about.
No doubt they are SH*T, but then, YOU can't monetize your presence there either!

Was just talking the AM with a coworker. Said the same thing about all these kids on social media begging for followers. Funny stuff

I don't know about guiding, but they are certainly encouraging it.

This is all an NIL play for media and clout. for the players it is vanity and money, for CU it is them trying to keep new players engaged and excited while putting them in a position to try and monetize their presence.

All about social reach. Look at how much some "influencers" make on IG and it's all down to their follower numbers aka social reach. It's similar to TV ratings really, how many people can you reach there? And unlike with TV commercials I think you have some better data on the meta data of target groups etc. on social media.

This is nowhere near a waste. Will it lead to anything NIL wise? Damn near certain that it's no. But if it makes the players happy, and is something that they can sell to recruits, it's definitely worth their time.

Yeah, I'm not sure why this would be considered a waste. Like, a waste of time for the CU Football Twitter account sending a Tweet telling people to follow the recruits?

This is the type of low hanging fruit that I've been banging on the AD to do for years. It annoys the hell out of me when scrolling on twitter, but it's 100% the right thing to do.

Sounds like a bunch of old men complaining about new-fangled technology.

Honestly if we won 6 games and went to a bowl we'd all be like "Hey did you notice this cool new thing the program is doing where they're promoting the social media accounts of the new recruits?

But because we suck it's like "Get a load of these losers begging for twitter followers."
